Paw Paw, A Magical n Mystical Native To North America Tropical Fruit Tree Grown Here In Amarillo!
Asimina Triloba, the American Paw Paw fruit is one of my most coveted and "mystical" fruit that I have yet to taste until now! Regarded as North America's tropical fruit, I finally got invited by an awesome gentlemen that has grown this fruit tree since 1999 here in Amarillo, TX where I thought it was impossible due to our extreme four season weather. Watch with me as I knock off a bucket list of mine to finally taste a Paw Paw fruit and have Pete answered many of the questions that I have for him.

    hello, thank you for your blueberry videos. how often should i spray this iron solution on leaves? should i do it everyday until it is fixed? or like once a week?

    • @natbackyardgarden
      @natbackyardgarden 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I would spray once a week! If no improvement then your soil ph is still either too high or too low so the soil must be dealt with for better results.

    • @masoudgg7154
      @masoudgg7154 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@natbackyardgarden thank you for responding. my blueberries are in their third year and i planted them in pots but unfortunately the commercial peat moss i used had starting NPK and limestone in it, so despite of using elemental sulfur and ammonium sulfate and also watering with a mixture of water and sulfuric acid (that has pH of 4.5 -5 as you mentioned in your watering video) still it did not decrease my soil pH, and still it remains at pH of 6.5 . but since i use all of them together (sulfur, ammonium sulfate and water with pH of 4.5-5) my plants still keep growing but now that they are getting bigger i started noticing some yellowing. (we do not have much rain in my area so i have to water with this mixture of water and sulfuric acid). So i think i should start foliar spraying and also maybe i should wash the soil with more amount of mixture of (water + sulfuric acid) that has pH of 4.5-5 . Or just add more sulfur and wait until next year, since we are entering fall? what do you think i should do? do you think watering with too much mixture of water + sulfuric acid with pH of 4.5-5 is bad and can damage soil bacteria?

    • @natbackyardgarden
      @natbackyardgarden 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@masoudgg7154 What is your method of measuring ph? Are you sure it is accurate with multiple tests from different methods? From what you are describing, your soil should be pretty low in ph so perhaps the problems you are experiencing is too low of a ph. It would take a pretty high ph in the 7+ for your blueberry plants to have any symptoms of iron chlorosis. Yes too much can be bad over a long period of time because your soil ph is perhaps much more lower than you think.

    • @masoudgg7154
      @masoudgg7154 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@natbackyardgarden i have a pH meter for soil, which i stick it directly into the soil and it shows between 6.2-6.5 on my 4 pots. also i measured the pH of water that drained from bottom of pots like you did in this video with paper pH meter, i used a bucket of water with initial pH of 4.5 and the pH of water that dripped down from the bottom of pot was at 6-6.2! so i am pretty sure pH is high. i think i was always cautious about using sulfur and ammonium sulfate so the amount i used for these two matter was low, and i used like 1 ounce of sulfur per 20 gallon pot at the start of spring and 0.3 ounce of ammonium sulfate per week for each pot during summer (in total 3 ounce of ammonium sulfate for each pot during this summer).

    How cool is it for you to have found this pawpaw guy!? They grow wild all throughout the Midwest, including here in Michigan. I tried twice to grow a group of three paw paw cultivars purchased from 2 different online nurseries. Both times they weren't far along enough to get established and survive our harsh winters, but we have orchards here so I could go buy some fruit to sample if I wanted. I totally gave up on growing them and I so I no longer am willing to go out of my way to try them, I'm still bitter about 6 trees dying I guess.

    I've been trying grow Pawpaws in Lubbock for several years. Many failures. I finally have a small grafted Potomac and a Mango Pawpaw in their 3rd year and I too have noticed improvement from providing as much rainwater as I possibly can. This summer I have watered most mornings from rainwater tanks. They have basically been holding their own but look much better off for the next year. Wind, alkalinity and arid air are the enemies of Pawpaws here. The sun is also a little too intense. My 3 year old trees are very happy being under shade cloth.

These plants that are being ship out now are grown in a fridge type of greenhouse climate so they will need some time to adjust to your current weather site. Did you transplant it directly in ground or container? If in ground I would provide some type of filer sunlight/shade for it and if in container then place it where it get very early morning sun and eventually give it more sunlight as the plant grow healthier.

    I have several asian pears, but pears such as the shinko and 20th century only yield for me in northwest florida just between zone 8b and 9a after a colder than average winter. They did this season flower, but got hit with fireblight. I will check to see what pears I still have on them. Hosui, chojiro, korean giant, and my two chinese pears do not require as many chill hours and typically bloom for me. The chojiro is overall the best asian pear for me. It has never caught fireblight. The same is true of one of my chinese pears (Can't say which since the tags got mixed, think it is Ya Li). The korean giant seems also resistant so far to fireblight. All of these are supposed to need a pollinator that blooms at the same time. If you have only one pear choose one that is said to be self fertile. The keiffer is the typical single family pear tree.

    I have 8 blueberry bushes total 5 in pots and 3 in ground. how much ammonium sulfate do you recommend to add for 8 plants please, and how much gallons of water for those 8 plants?

      For the blueberries in containers, I would advise you to use 1 teaspoon per 2 to 2.5 gallon of water. You can always increase the amount once you become comfortable and watch your plants carefully on their reaction to the safe lower amount beforehand. For the one in ground, you can apply a higher dosage depending on the size of your blueberry plants.

      @@natbackyardgarden thank you. You think 2 gallons will be enough for all 8 bushes or is that to much water?

      @@jclivin5 2 gallon would be enough for about 4 plants, just make sure the soil is moisten before applying the additional water/fertilizer mix.
