Thanks Pete for letting us see the fruit they say grows wild all over America and yet we never see or smell. Never even heard second hand stories from Grand or great grandparents. So yeah, thanks for the chance to finally see them.😊
How cool is it for you to have found this pawpaw guy!? They grow wild all throughout the Midwest, including here in Michigan. I tried twice to grow a group of three paw paw cultivars purchased from 2 different online nurseries. Both times they weren't far along enough to get established and survive our harsh winters, but we have orchards here so I could go buy some fruit to sample if I wanted. I totally gave up on growing them and I so I no longer am willing to go out of my way to try them, I'm still bitter about 6 trees dying I guess.
I hope you give it another shot at growing it! There's something about waiting patiently and having success picking that first fruit after many months and eventually years n years that is just so satisfying.
I've been trying grow Pawpaws in Lubbock for several years. Many failures. I finally have a small grafted Potomac and a Mango Pawpaw in their 3rd year and I too have noticed improvement from providing as much rainwater as I possibly can. This summer I have watered most mornings from rainwater tanks. They have basically been holding their own but look much better off for the next year. Wind, alkalinity and arid air are the enemies of Pawpaws here. The sun is also a little too intense. My 3 year old trees are very happy being under shade cloth.
The owner of the Paw Paw trees should try adding Ammonium-based fertilizers which will acidify soil. Scott’s lawn fertilizer are ammonia based nitrogen.
Hey Nat check this place out, they have one orange tree that will handle down to -28F , I have bought a few trees from them and they send out really nice looking trees that are ready to plant outside if the tree you ordered will handle the climate all year where you live, right now they only have citrus trees but he says in this video that they are going to have persimmon and pawpaws soon and more different fruit and I don't remember if he said nut trees too in the future, I thought this might interest you , I hope you guys are doing great.. Pawpaw wild in Michigan?!? They say it won’t even make it in Oklahoma
@@mrsmango76 Yes, one of the nicknames for the fruit is "Michigan Banana" My neighbor posted his pawpaw harvest on the nextdoor app a week or so ago.
@@mrsmango76 I know of a guy who as a kid picked a lot of wild paw paw in the eastern/southeastern part of Oklahoma.

Love how excited you get about this fruit. Now I need to try it. Will this grow in Iowa? Never heard if this fruit till now.
It never hurt to try! We get down to 0 or -2F once a year and they come back fine.

Putting seeds in the refrigerator will kill them
