  • These are the most versatile and satisfying vegetable to grow in our backyard years in and out. The tender shoots/leaves taste amazing in stir fry and there is just no other feeling like it digging for sweet potatoes tuber with your own bare hand not knowing what you will get!

    Your video is a great reminder of the value of patience and perseverance. It takes a lot of time and effort to grow and harvest melons and oranges, but the end result is so worth it. And the fact that you're able to make a living by selling them at the market is even more impressive. Keep up the great work! And it's an honor to have you visit our channel, we can discuss more about our experiences in harvesting and building farms.

    The container grown slips apparently had WAY too much nitrogen fertilization. That is the most common failure point with sweet potatoes. They are not heavy nitrogen feeders and when too much is present, they make vines instead of tubers.

      Question: is there any low nitrogen soil that you know of?

    You should have dump the container so you can see whats at the bottom.

    • @natbackyardgarden
      @natbackyardgarden  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I dumped the rest of soil out to recycle the soil to use for next year. Unfortunately there was a bunch of tiny roots with not a single potato sighh.

      @@natbackyardgarden What I normally do is NOT cut the sweet potato leaves. But dump out the container to check if Swete potatoes have grown
      If only very small, or just thick roots like what you had put it all back into the container and allow it to grow for another few months.
      Try to limit the growth of the leaves once they spread out enough so the plant puts it energy into producing swete potato and not more leaves

    • @natbackyardgarden
      @natbackyardgarden  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BoomsBlooms yes thanks! These containers were perhaps in the hottest spot of the yard...and with the extreme heat this year, maybe it was too much for them. Will try again in a different location and perhaps experiment with watering more/less.

    I'm in Amarillo, I have some sweet potatoes that I bought from Sam's a while back. I'm attempting to grow my own slips from them and plant in ground. Any tips for success??

    • @natbackyardgarden
      @natbackyardgarden  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! Yes I will have a few tips for ya. For our area do not even attempt to plant them until the temperature is much warmer in May. If you are planting in ground, then a raised bed would be ideal. If in ground then make sure to till the soil and make it very loose and sort of raised it up as a soil berm. They will do well when planted in a compost mixed soil, but make sure not to feed it with any type of heavy nitrogen fertlizer in the early stages. Fertilizer low in nitrogen and high in phosphorus will be ideal.
