Our Sicilian Adventure Continues. (Finally!) Ep 26
Join us on our Sicilian Expat adventure!
We're Elizabeth and Brian, a retired American couple from Oregon who quit working in our fifties to pursue our dream of living abroad-- and that led us to Sicily. So far? Although there have been some bumps along the way, it has been a dream come true. Follow along as we fix up our abandoned old Sicilian farmhouse, discover our surroundings and learn about Sicilian wine and cuisine. Amuninni!
This week we finally get our video tech together, visit the beautiful Barouque town of Scicli and make some progress on our water and power systems.

      It’s super easy to buy a property. No issues. And if you’re willing to come for three months at a time, leave, and then come back. That’s easy, too. BUT, if you want to stay here for more than three months at a time? You need a residency visa. That’s when it gets a little complicated. You have to go the Italian embassy closest to you and apply. Not impossible but you need to qualify and you need to be patient 😊

    Hi Bees , good to see you back this week, hope you're having another great week. You mention your Visas this week, which route did you take, is it the Elective Residency?. We're just starting out on the research so any pointers would be great. We're happy to hear that the office in Syracuse has been good to you. All the best for your week, look forward to seeing you soon, whichever day is best for you. :-)

      Yes. Elective Residency. You can get the paperwork packet from your Italian Embassy. Honestly it hasn’t been difficult at all. You just have to be patient with their incredibly inefficient bureaucracy 🤣

    Your videos are the best! Makes me want to move to Sicily more and more, even with the bureaucracies and snafus…although that is educational to prepare me. I am a single mom and nurse, and I think about becoming fluent in Italian so that I can move there sooner than later (working there vs just retiring there). I am tired of how I see people not gathering here anymore the way they do there. I love old traditional and finding myself to be an old soul. My heart is sad being here for that reason, while I could be there, where people are so welcoming, along with my values and desires. Just waiting to see what direction in life my youngest heads (he’s 21). Both my boys like to travel but neither desire to land in Sicily. But they are young, and it’s understandable. We shall see! When I make a trip there, I would love to speak with you more about Sicily, if you are up for that. But I imagine many people ask that. I will touch base when the time comes to see if that is an option. Thanks again for your videos, thorough and enjoyable!

    As a Sicilian, I apologize for the issues you encountered in Scicli. Tourist trap behavior is a problem. It might seem challenging at times, but once you become fluent in Italian, these issues will likely fade. People will start seeing you as more of a local than a tourist. To me, you are already one of us. Welcome to our beautiful and sometimes quirky land. I lived in the US (Washington State, Colorado) for many years, but now I'm back in my hometown of Palermo. If you have any questions about visiting Palermo(if you ever plan to do so), feel free to contact me. I'd be happy to help. -Paolo

    • @beeseurotravel
      @beeseurotravel 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Paolo, thanks for the kind words. We love Sicily. No place is perfect and we love the quirkiness. Truly. And yes, our Italian needs to improve! But man we’ve received a lot of comments on this and some I’ve had to take down. Many people feel differently about Scicli and that is great. Really, truly. But for us it just felt like Scicli was more interested in our money than anything else. Here’s a good example. In Palazzolo, where we spend a lot of time, there are EasyPark signs everywhere and the blue parking lines are well-marked. There is no way you could not know that you are in a paid parking area unless you are completely oblivious. So the town doesn’t want to create any misunderstandings or hard feelings with a parking ticket. In Scicli it was exactly the opposite. When we got there I looked around and I actually said to Beth that I thought it was awesome that there was free parking so close to the center 🤣🤣 And then with the churches. We almost always give some money when we visit. But to be hit up for money when you walk in the door at every church? It felt wrong. And tours? We like tours and we know that Scicli is famous for Montalbano. Great! It was just everything, all together, that made for a bad feeling. Anyhow, it’s not a big deal. Scicli will figure it out on its own time. But there are many Sicilians who rely on tourism and worry about this behaviour. We spoke with two people just last night about this. Thanks for the offer on Palermo. We spent a month in Santa Flavia and loved it. And we visited Palermo several times. There is, I’m sure, a lot more to discover there.

    • @PaoloCampo823
      @PaoloCampo823 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@beeseurotravelYou are 100% correct. I cannot agree more with you regarding the parking fiasco. Sometimes, like in Scicli, parking signage is far from efficient and clearly displayed. Sometimes, it is done on purpose to increase the ticket rate, which is super scummy but true. It is a shameful truth to admit, but we can only improve ourself only when we face what's wrong. Take this as a learning experience; I am sure you do. It's part of your step-by-step process of learning life here. In Palermo, for example, some churches ask for "donations," but these "donations" are not voluntary at all. If you visit Palermo's catacombs, be prepared for this "donation" system, (location that you should visit when you come here again, really odd but insanely fascinating and unique). But I totally understand-sometimes, it really makes you scratch your head. Fortunately, for every misstep, there are hundreds of wonderful experiences that make us accept these issues. I am from here, and after living away for so long, I had a hard time to reintroduce myself here, in my own native land! I was used to things I took for granted but are also part of who I am today. Once you leave the place you are from and live in another place it's never the same anymore. You feel a mix of everything. I am sure you understand. You are two awesome people and with your past experiences that will help you a lot. It's awesome that you have already been to Palermo. Yeah, Palermo is a lot to take in. It’s a different beast compared to the rest of Sicily, but it is the most glorious and epic city on the island (yes, I am biased), and one of the oldest cities in the world, older than Rome. But it’s a lot to digest (I am considering moving in a more calm town close to Palermo-maybe Capaci or Isola delle Femmine because I need calm sometimes..lol) . My suggestion for your next visit is to plan the trip in detail. It may seem generic, but for Palermo, it really matters. Know exactly where to go, how to get there, and what to expect. This will help a lot. With the right plan and approach, Palermo is like nothing else in Sicily. Again, thank you for choosing to be with us.

    • @beeseurotravel

      For us the Elective Residency visa has been pretty straightforward. We applied with all of the paperwork at the Boston Embassy. We were granted a short term visa and then when we got to Noto we went to the post office for our paperwork, visited the local immigration office (questura) and have been dinking around with a few minor paperwork issues since. It hasn’t been bad at all. You just need to be patient.

      Right? The video didn’t do it justice. It’s way better than that if you can believe it!

    For more water pressure add an air tank above your water pump. The tank fills up and then when you turn on your tap on it is pressurized. That is what I do at our off grid house we just sold in Panama. We are moving to Italy September 1st. I know much about solar system if you need some help with that too.

      I have electricity there so I have a pressure regulator. Just need to get everything installed now!

      @@antoninoragazzo9055 Yes, we flyout of Panama on August 11. The jungle is not all glory for sure, even when you live on a small island by yourself. The insects are relentless and the rain is overwhelming. We tried it, but now back to the First World and the best.
