I am 1st generation born in USA, both parents born and raised in Palermo. I have been visiting my family in Palermo almost every year since birth. My husband and I are contemplating becoming expats. We are going to Palermo for 2 months Sept thru Oct 2025, renting an apartment in Terrasini, outside of Palermo in hopes that my husband will embrace the Sicilian culture. We would love to talk and visit with other American expats in Sicily and if possible yourselves. Is there an expat community I can reach out to? We look forward to meeting you both. BTW, your excruciating heat is the same as out here in SC….my cousin and I lament about it every week. Stay safe and healthy, enjoy la vita Siciliana.
Funny, where we are the heat is dry and it’s not awful. BUT to have two months of slightly uncomfortable heat in exchange for 10 months of perfection? No biggie. There’s a couple of Facebook groups for Expats but our French experience taught us to avoid them. Meeting Americans here has come naturally and it has been much better. I’d even go so far as to say your best bet is to work hard at learning Italian and meet some Sicilians that speak some English. That is the sweet spot if you really want to enjoy a new life here.
@@beeseurotravel thank you for getting back to me. I am as fluent as a native, Italian is my first language and the dialect of Palermo second…we only spoke Italian as I was living under my parents roof. English came as I began school in the US. Stay cool
Yes a bad news, I hope you will be back soon! In any case I would like to suggest you an old and important book about the ancient Sicilian nobility, which indeed has been a real cultural craddle: The Leopard (Il gattopardo in Italian) by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa (the last Prince of Lampedusa). It's historical and philosophical at the same time. It takes place in Sicily before the Italian union in 1862. As you are in love with that island and its people I think you will particularly enjoy this reading. Otherwise you can just watch the film, with Burt Lancaster, Claudia Cardinale, Alain Delon. Also great, although the book is better! Ciao, see you soon (hopefully)!
Really bad news 😢... Look forward to Sunday's with you both.. See you next week 😊😊😊😊
