- Join us on our Sicilian Expat adventure!
We're Elizabeth and Brian, a retired American couple from Oregon who quit working in our fifties to pursue our dream of living abroad-- and that led us to Sicily. So far? Although there have been some bumps along the way, it has been a dream come true. Follow along as we fix up our abandoned old Sicilian farmhouse, discover our surroundings and learn about Sicilian wine and cuisine. Amuninni!
This week we visit beaches in Avola and Portopalo, enjoy a great truffle dinner and enjoy our first event in Palazzolo Acreide's ancient Greek theater.

That bike tour is now my goal in life. I just want to go on an ebike ride around the Sicilian countryside.
LOL. It’s pretty nice right? Just stay away from Palermo!! 🤣
Hi guys. We found your channel about a week ago and we have just finished binge-watching all your episodes. We love your videos, your attitude to life, and that you took the leap to move to Sicily. We are moving to Sicily in October, and these videos provide such great inspiration. Keep doing what you are doing! You are a brilliant example of what is possible when you follow your dreams and take the leap. Thank you 🙂
Thanks 😊 It’s not always unicorns and rainbows but it’s a great life here. Best of luck and thanks for watching!
Hi Beth and Brian, my name is Giovanni and I am a dual national of Sicily and Belgium and I live in Brussels. I saw your youtubes by chance. Now I look forward to them every week. I was surprised that US citizens are settling to live in Sicily, when in fact the opposite is more natural. I am originally from Modica and I go there quite often. What you are doing is good. I’m waiting yr next post.
Thanks, Giovanni. People are leaving the US and droves. It’s a great place to make money but not such a great place to just enjoy your life. It’s expensive, politics are crazy… I dunno. But Sicily tics a lot of boxes and there are LOTS of Americans here in Sicily now 😊
I like your vibes. You two are lucky. Enjoy the day!
Thanks 😊
Funny thing about carrube (don’t know how to spell it - see 7:50 minutes in). My Sicilian grandfather would pulverize a small amount and add it to the wine we made in the fall each year. It gave the wine a very distinctive flavor. We made homemade wine until he passed. Even as a child growing up in New York City I was allowed to drink wine with dinner. How I miss those days. Thank you for sharing your videos from Sicily. Love them. Ciao,
Thanks for watching 😊 And that’s really interesting on the wine. It definitely has a very distinct flavor. I love it alone but I’ve had it with other things like honey and I’m not a huge fan. Would love to try it wine though- I bet that chocolate flavor would be really interesting. I’m glad you got to have that experience with your grandfather 😊
Oh my gosh that bike segment was so funny. And I love carob. Wow. I’m falling in love with Sicily! Another gorgeous video, Bees! 💕
😝 Thanks.
You should be getting recognition from the Sicilian tourist board for promoting so well Sicily...
Those scenes when you’re on your bike‼️. If I wasn’t 80 years old….I would be there in a heartbeat❣️Thank you.
🤣 You’re welcome.
You are both looking great.. And it's better to rest in that heat.. So good getting a video from you..
Thanks 😊
Oh! Can't wait to see the festival!!!!❤
Me neither!! I think we’re just going to an episode of us first person all day (if the video turns out ok!)
you guys have the best chanel on youtube! I was in Noto in April and hope to be back next spring with my Granddaughter, I hope we can meet you two and have pranzo or qualcosa.
Glad you switched to Wedesday. Keep them comming! Thank You!!
LOL. That’s awfully nice of you. Happy to have a drink with happy people 😊
Great video looking forward to your next one
Thanks 😊
Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful life with us. Love your videos!
,
Thank you 😊
Great video guys! Loved all of the information and the bike ride. You are looking very fit these days Brian! Always fun to watch your videos!
Hahahaha. I’m getting fat and you’re not helping 🤣🤣
I really enjoy the different beaches and little towns you are traveling around too. I bring up a map of Sicily so that I can see where you’re referring to. I love learning everything I can about the South Eastern section of Sicily. La Vita Bella 💙
Si. This is a beautiful place to live.
I am based in the Boston area and thoroughly enjoy your videos. My family and I love Italy, I'd love to spend a portion of my retirement over there. Thank you so much for sharing a glimpse of your life, much appreciated. We are going to visit Italy later this year. Would love to say hello if we make it to Sicily. Wish you both the very best and thanks again for sharing. Ciao!!
Thanks 😊 And we’re always up for a drink with happy people 😎 Ciao.
It is crazy to hear the phrase “Prescott Park” in a video about Italy😁😁😁
🤣
Another enjoyable and informative episode in Sicily with you guys. Nice bike segment.
Thanks. It’s fun to do things like that.
You guys make us smile! Thank you
Good! And thanks 😊
Lv watching and seeing silicy. Thank you,
Thanks 😊
Great couple 😊 l see you already picked up the Italian “vibe” Piano Piano!!😉
🤣
Good to see you enjoying Scicily. Love the clips. 😊
Thanks 😊
We really enjoy your videos
Thank you 😊
Thanks for the video! 👑😊
Welcome 😊
Beautiful again. You are both positively blooming. 😍
Thanks 😊 It’s not a lot of work to be happy here!
Love that blouse!
I wish i didn’t have to wait until retirement to move to Italy 😢
it'll take some effort to freeze in winter in Sicily, unless you're high up in the mountains xD
You'll have time til December or January even
True. We were here last winter (we’re at about 500m) and it was cold until the sun came up. After that it was no problem 😊
Thankyou 😊
Thanks for watching 😊
If the house in France was ay indication, it'll be worth the wait! Also, that theatre experience looked rad!
Thanks 😊 And yes it was SO MUCH FUN. If you ever get a chance to do something like that don’t worry about the language and just give it a go.
Looks like your having a wonderful time in Cicely at the beaches festivals and Nights out cheers from 🇦🇺
Yes 😊 Sicilians live well!
Piano piano 👍
Dried dandelion root and carob make a superb coffee substitute for anyone who can't drink too much coffee.
Interesting! Thanks for sharing 😊
😊have you already been to Lampedusa? Sicilian island but closer to the African continent! its beaches are wonderful! despite being very small, there is also an airport! 😊
Not yet! We barely even know the west coast. Lots to see and do. Thanks for the tip 😊
@@beeseurotravel before you go book the boat that takes you to "SPIAGGIA DEI CONIGLI" because places are limited and you have to book online, I assure you that you will fall in love with it! Tiny fishermen's island with beautiful beaches and a fabulous sea! 🥰😍
Piano, piano. You'll get the Italian way of life 😂. Looks all great 👍😍🍸
As Beth says 'piano piano' not a lot gets done in August in Sicily!!
Very true… but living in a job site gets a little old… 😝
How beautiful...
Nice video - good to see you happy and enjoying your life in sicily but what about the water - quite a serious problem that would worry me living there
No water problems where we are but there are definitely problems on the island. Still, it is only one year and in the 90’s there was actually a period worse than this. I think the news likes to focus on doom and gloom but bet you didn’t hear about this:
www.euronews.com/green/2024/08/02/hidden-water-reserve-twice-the-size-of-loch-ness-discovered-in-drought-stricken-sicily#:~:text=A%20huge%20reserve%20of%20fresh,2%2C500%20metres%20below%20the%20surface.
@@beeseurotravel fantastic even if it will not be easy
Great video
Thanks 😊
Blue skys!! Another great video. Thanks for the beach tips, some new spots to try. Did you have a chance to enjoy the almonds in Avola?
No. We have lots in our garden 😉😊
LOL. They do like their church bells.
Love your videos, B&B!
There's a lot of confusing information online about the đrout situation in southern Sicily. Are you finding yourselves subject to water restrictions?
Where we are there is no water problem but there are places where wells are running dry and lots of restrictions have been put in place. A massive new water source has been discovered under Palazzolo that is twice the size of Loch Ness and that should ease a lot of problems moving forward… but it is a problem and probably always will be.
Was that the Greek Theatre in Taormina? (You didn’t mention the location). I visited there last year, the views from the theatre were stunning!
Sorry if we weren’t specific. It’s in Palazzolo Acreide and is very intimate. Maybe 400 seats? I would really like to visit the theater in Taormina. It looks amazing 😍
You guys look great! I never tire of your backyard or seeing your property, in general. I love the countryside. Sure appreciate this video, though, and others like it. This video was as though you were hosts getting ready for the festivities of a large broadcast event 😊 …was watching intently to see what you would be showing. Your videos are the best! Shows the absolute true culture of Sicily. Magnífico! Can’t thank you enough for sharing! ~Lynette
@@LiveLifeTravelerThanks! 😊
I can’t understand what you are saying the name of the village you are in. Can you lease spell it out? Thank you!
Palazzolo
@@mikehornick4971thank you!
Palazzolo Acreide
Hello! I have a couple of questions . You drove your car from France.. right?- did you buy it in Europe… re-register in Sicily? Do you run across American-Canadian- European single older women traveling… or only couples ? I’m traveling to Calabria & Sicily next spring 2025, and plan on renting a place inside a town (love Noto so far)… not in the country-side … (like you2, cause you’re a couple) and watching you has given me a realistic dose of reality. I plan on riding a bicycle… but wondered about Vespa’s… Dangerous? Allora… my Italian is minimal..,. But I’m use to traveling solo sono…I’m an artist, outgoing… and if you have any time to write me back… brava… be well… love the electric bike..
It all depends on where you go. Sicily is incredibly diverse. Palermo is mad. Wonderful but mad. Especially for driving and there is no way I’d ride a bike there. Catania is pretty crazy, too. We love the SE though. Siracusa is a really nice small city and we are spending more and more time there. I don’t think you can go wrong with the SE. Lots of small villages, friendly, helpful people and a very chill vibe. Lots of Vespas AND bikes here. We know a single American woman in her 60’s who lives 45 minutes away in Ispica and she is as happy as a clam. Noto is a great place to spend a day or two but for a long stay I wouldn’t recommend it. It’s pretty touristic.
Petrichor…….ahhhhhhhh
Are there many refugees there?
Oh yes and massive crime, most unreported
I can only speak for Palazzolo and there are no problems here.
@@karlaparker7988 This is an exaggeration.
In terms of refugees though, are there many? t@@beeseurotravel
love to travel and watch others share places and tips. Hi I'm Jeanine
Hi Jeanine. I hope you make it to Sicily one day 😊
@@beeseurotravel I may, but I know my son will for sure, he is half Sicilian and has Many family members in Palermo Sicily where his dad was born and his grandparents. He's a marine pilot and has been to Rome, sure he is planning a trip😊 in the future. Funny I was speaking with him last year about how many people are buying places there because you can get a good deal, so one day I may be visiting him there with his 3 girls, that would be cool. For now, I'm busy with a place in Florida and a place in New York, but you guys are doing great, all the best to you. He doesn't watch his mom on TH-cam because he's a better cook then me, lol! But I am going to tell him to go watch your channel, he would like to see what you are doing, it's very interesting. Thanks again and look forward to watching you renovate your home. Also, my Husbands' family is from Naples and My Dad as well, we are going to try and apply for dual citizenship. It would be great. Let me know if you guys did since you live there and is it difficult? My sister-in-law started the paperwork process, but It's very early in her process. If you get a chance, I would love to know.😊
