Hi Randy. Just back from my vacation as you are about to go on yours, have a great time. A great video once again and i again enjoyed seeing the TV sets you have. Although it wasn’t my favourite as a kid, nowadays I’m in agreement that From Russia with Love is the best Bond movie (I didn’t know that fact on Lotte Lenya, thanks). High and Low also great. Spike Lee is just wrapping up a remake starring Denzel Washington and Jeffrey Wright. Hard to see it being an improvement but I’ll still be interested to see it. For me, two other favourite movies from this year are Bay of Angels and Hud

Another great installment. I need to see the Birds, it's one of the last Hitchcock movies i havent seen.

I guess I have to go back and watch your previous ones sometime. Good choice with Dylan, that one probably sits up there with one of my favorites from that year, but I was only 2 yrs old at the time, so I was a bit of a late-comer with that one. Very nice looking records, everything is in such nice shape. Nice pick with Roy Orbison too, another favorite of mine. I've got that collection and I have to say it's the best collection of his songs, and he definitely has a lot of them.

Most of my favorite songs of 1963 are from Bob Dylan (A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, Don't Think Twice It's All Right, Blowin' in the Wind), The Beatles (Please Please Me, I Saw Her Standing There) and The Beach Boys (Little Deuce Coupe, In My Room). Other favorites are The Ronettes (Be My Baby), Martha & the Vandellas (Heat Wave) and Dion (Donna The Prima Donna). Favorite TV Shows would be similar to yours, The Fugitive, Petticoat Junction and The Outer Limits. As far as movies. Top 5 would be 1. The Birds 2. Charade 3. The Great Escape 4. From Russia With Love 5. Hud. See you in 1964.

I just got done listening to albums of 1962 so I haven’t delved into 1963 yet. Right now I would have to say Please Please Me is my favorite album right now. My favorite movie is It’s A Mad Mad Mad Mad World. I also like McLintock and Spencer’s Mountain.

Beach Boys, Dylan, and Beatles. Now we’re talking. From Russia With Love is a great pick. I’ve always had a love for Hitchcock’s The Birds. Like you, I always think of the movie when I see large flocks of birds. I just referenced the movie when my wife and I were spending a few days in Michigan by Lake Huron and all the sea gulls kept hanging around us on the beach 😁. Excellent series Randy.

My favorites before watching the video- Album-The Freewheelin Bob Dylan- has classics like Blowin In The Wind and Don't Think Twice, It's Alright. Plus hilarious comic songs like Talkin World War III Blues. Song- Be My Baby by the Ronettes Movie- Love With The Proper Stranger- the only time Steve McQueen and Natalie Wood appeared together, they have great chemistry. This is a great and daring comedy/drama. TV Show- The Patty Duke Show

Fave album..Martha& The Vandellas.....Heat Wave Song/..Angels/My boyfriend's back Film..Pink Panther.. But I want to mention 2 films for sentimental reasons 55 Days at Peking..Chuck Heston.. My dad took me to the drive- in to see this The Cardinal/Otto Preminger..Part of this film was made it Boston my hometown.. And several of my relatives.. Somehow got in the film as extras Favorite TV show..Patty Duke..underrated actress for sure.

One of my favorite TV shows that had it's debut in '59 was "The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends". I'm especially fond of the episode where Bullwinkle goes to Hollywood and decides to change his name to "Craig Antler" For some reason that name always makes me laugh.

I didn't know Billy Preston had played with Sam Cooke...I have some early albums by Billy I should really revisit soon. Ernie Maresca, I've heard a song or two by him on those Collector's Records Of The 50's & 60's compilations from Laurie Records, I used to find different volumes of those once in a while. Jerry Butler has quite a big discography and I have really only heard a little bit from him with a few 45's and three LP's from 1968-78 in my collection. What a DVD collection you have, I have not seen any of these but I did watch South Pacific again the other day, for the first time in decades. A few years prior to 1963 but perhaps I will be inspired to get back into more old movies. I read somewhere once that the TV networks deliberately phased out those rural based series of the 1960's like Petticoat Junction in order to appeal to a more urban (and supposedly urbane) audience. Loads of Beatles albums in 63 Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, James Brown had albums . Love the singing of Jerry Butler and Sam Cooke. You've got good taste. As far as movies go, the best from 63 was The Birds. And the second best might surprise some people. It's Sam Fuller's Shock Corridor. One of this terrific exciting director's best films. IT IS GREAT. My third fav is , again some might be surprised, Jerry Lewis' The Nutty Professor, the best film he directed. He acts in it too and is VERY funny and very good. The film is not all ha ha, , it has a wonderful spiritual message too.

I like Jerry Butler a lot too, but I only know his big hits, and things that he did with the Impressions - wish he would have stayed with them a bit longer… I do have “Night Beat” by Sam Cooke (great!) and also the other albums you mentioned by The Beach Boys, Dylan, and The Beatles - all undisputed, wonderful classics. Gosh, I guess that I really like the Country Western music from this period, because for my favorite songs I’m picking “Six Days On The Road”, by Dave Dudley, “Detroit City” by Bobby Bare, “Leaving On Your Mind” by Patsy Cline ( - I almost picked George Hamilton IV’s “Abilene”) plus “Be My Baby” by The Ronettes, and “Mickey’s Monkey” by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles … My favorite movies are “The Courtship Of Eddie’s Father”, “The Nutty Professor”, “Lillies Of The Field”, “Hud”, and “The Birds”. My favorite blues/soul singer, and St. James Infirmary is the best cut on "Two Steps To The Blues" I feel.. I need to get into some Sam Fuller films. Hi Randy. Rich Strickler brought me here; and now I realise I'm already a subscriber to your channel. I agree with you about JT. He has one of the best VC channels. The Tom Waits sleeve is excellent. It looks like a still from a movie. I'm a big fan of Graham Parker and related acts such as Brinsley Schwarz (the band). It was so good to see Parker back with the Rumour a few years ago. I saw a documentary about him, and Springsteen said he was a big fan.

My favorite album this year is Don’t Play That Song by Ben E King. I also like Save the Last Dance for Me by The Drifters and The Fabulous Miracles by The Miracles. Favorite song is Stand by Me by Ben E King. I also really like Save the Last Dance for me by The Drifters and Surfin Safari by The Beach Boys. My favorite movie is To Kill a Mockingbird. I also like The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, The Longest Day, and How the West Was Won. I’m not familiar with any of the TV shows though I would like to check out Michale’s Navy.

Good Evening Randy. I agree that this was a solid year for films. Four of your five appear on my list. I basically have ten films and nothing else for this year. My No 1: Is David Lean’s ‘Lawrence of Arabia’, with Peter O’toole, Alec Guinness and Omar Sharif. A masterpiece and on of my top favourite films of all time. I would also love to see it on the big screen, particularly the camel charge on Aqaba. At No 2: Robert Aldrich’s ‘Whatever Happened to Baby Jane’, with Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. This psychological thriller is in a class of its own. The tension between Joan Crawford and Better Davis coupled to the B & W photography makes this very special. At No 3: Gregory Peck in ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’. A landmark film of its time. At No 4: A solid remake from MGM came with ‘Mutiny On The Bounty’, with Trevor Howard, Marlon Brando and Richard Harris. I enjoyed this version much better than their 1935 version with Clark Gable and Charles Laughton, even though the 1935 version was a landmark film of its time. I still feel that the most accurate portrayal of Captain Bligh is in the 1984 version, ‘The Bounty’, with Anthony Hopkins and Mel Gibson, which is a very good film. At No 5: John Frankenheimer’s ‘The Manchurian Candidate’, with Frank Sinatra, Lawrence Harvey, Janet Leigh and Angela Lansbury. Agree, its unusual to see Angela Lansbury play a sinister character.Very good political thriller and superior to the remake. At No 6: J. Lee Thompson’s ‘Cape Fear’, with Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum. I will say that I also enjoyed Martin Scorsese’s 1991 remake with Robert De Niro and Nick Nolte. I felt that both films were very well done from two very successful film Director’s. Each film has its own merits. At No 7: Sam Peckinpah’s ‘Ride The High Country’, with Joel McCrae and Randolph Scott. Solid western from Sam Peckinpah. I also agree with you that ‘The Wild Bunch’ is much more exciting and is also my favourite of his westerns. At No 8: Terence Young’s ‘Dr. No’, with Sean Connery. The film that started the James Bond franchise that we still enjoy over 60+ years later. At No 9: ‘Night Of The Eagle’, with Peter Wyngarde and Janet Blair. An above average psychological horror that is well worth the watch. Works well in B & W and like ‘Night Of the Demon (1957)’ also has a very well written script. Seen both of these films many, many times. At No 10: Richard Egan and Ralph Richardson in the historical drama ‘300 Spartans’. I have not seen this film now for over thirty years but have fond memories of it and found it way better than the 2006 film ‘300’. Your other film ‘The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence’ is a film I have not seen yet. I will check it out. On the TV Series section, I also enjoyed ‘The Saint’ with Roger Moore. It came back again in the UK in the late 70’s as ‘Return Of the Saint’, with Ian Ogilvy taking over from Roger Moore. That is for me for 1962. Have a great evening.

Hello Randy! I can’t say the music in this one was my style but I enjoyed you talking about it. I’ve always liked Curse of the Werewolf by Hammer. I need to check out Way Out. Sounds interesting. Avengers is classic. We used to watch the Dick Van Dyke show in syndication around supper time every week day when I was a kid. I love that show and I remember the episode you mentioned. Great episode Randy.

A lot of classics here. I reread To Kill a Mockingbird couple years ago, great book and film. I need to get some Mose Allinson into the collection. His records used to be quite common in charity shops in the UK. I haven't seen your number one film.

Besides that Duke of Earl LP there was Bob Dylan's debut and The Beach Boys Surfin' Safari. My fav films from 62 are The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, Marrill's Marauders, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane, Hatari ,Mister Arkadin, The Crimson Kimono, Ride the High Country

Great stuff Randy, as always! It is funny that rock took a back seat for those first couple of years in the 60s, especially after the big 50s boom.

I love Gene Pitney and I agree with you that the early 60’s was a much better era for music than many people think, especially in r&b. “Havin’ A Party” by Sam Cooke is a classic, I remember Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes would often end their shows with that. “Soldier Of Love” by Arthur Alexander is a great pick. There actually is a radio recording of the Beatles doing it on the BBC…. I like all of your movie picks. It’s very hard to narrow them down, but I’m going to pick “Carnival Of Souls”, “Lawrence Of Arabia”, “Lonely Are The Brave”, “Requiem For A Heavyweight”, and “To Kill A Mockingbird”, with honorable mention to “Tales Of Terror”, a trilogy of Edgar Allan Poe stories starring Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, Basil Rathbone and others. It’s really not that good, but I have a great memory of seeing at a Saturday horror film matinee in the early seventies and it’s a real guilty pleasure.. Finally, my favorite songs of 1962 are “The End Of The World” by Skeeter Davis, “Beechwood 4-5789” by The Marvelettes, “Baby It’s You” by The Shirelles, “Our Day Will Come” by Ruby & The Romantics, and “Devil Woman” by Marty Robbins. I really admire your TV video collection! Take care..

Liberty Valance, another song I first heard on one of those oldies comps as a teen. I may have also seen the film long ago now that I think of it. I have one Mose Allison LP on Prestige and the self titled Arthur Alexander album, both from the early 70's. I did watch Lawrence Of Arabia again in the last couple of years. I am starting to have heard of some (but not all) of the TV series though I do not recall ever watching them. I remember long ago on a music message board there was a guy who posted under the name Simon Templar, he must have been a fan of The Saint. Cheers!

I have two of that Gene Pitney album, one of them the heart is die cut the other is not. There are so many movies and tv shows Ive never seen but want to. need to set away some time to do that. Just the packaging on the Virginian makes me want to watch it.

I have liked all of the Ray Charles and Sam Cooke tunes I have heard. I don't think I have heard anything from the others, but I could be wrong. The Manchurian Candidate is awesome and I even liked the remake. I have seen your runners up, but not your #1 movie pick, unless I have forgotten that I saw it. I think I may have seen some of the Saint.

I can't argue with any of your selections. Here's a couple other suggestions - "The Way You Look Tonight" by The Lettermen. You may be seeing more of that song on my channel soon. A favorite album of mine that came out in 1961 is Bert Kaempfert's "Wonderland By Night" which features that memorable title song. You must not have The Absent-Minded Professor in physical format - surely that would have to be your #1 movie for 1961. Fred McMcMurray after he got out of jail for killing Barbara Stanwyck's husband. Or something like that. I'm a big fan of Doric and Rock movies too. She also made a couple fantastic movies with Rod Taylor. I have your #1 album and #1 song - thanks to your recommendations from years ago! lol Dick Van Dyke Show - one of the best ever. Good Evening Randy. I have an interesting selection of films this year. My No 1 is J. Lee Thompson’s ‘The Guns of Navarone’. An all star cast in an excellent film adaptation of the novel by Alistair MacLean. Great action film. At No 2: Basil Dearden’s ‘Victim’, with Sylvia Syms and Dirk Bogarde. Centres around a gay Barrister who is being blackmailed. Very realistic and authentic film for the era in the UK when it was set. At No 3: Val Guest’s ‘The Day The Earth Caught Fire’, with Janet Munro and Leo McKern. This concerns an alteration to the axis of rotation of the earth following two simultaneous nuclear test explosions. Very well done Sci-Fi disaster movie holding your interest throughout. At No 4: Susan Strasberg and Ann Todd in ‘Taste of Fear’. The first in a series of Psychological Thrillers made by the Hammer Film Studios in the 1960’s. Very well done with a good plot. At No 5: Kirk Douglas and E. G. Marshall in ‘Town Without Pity’. Four soldiers are on trial for their life following the rape of a local girl in 1960 Germany. Well worth a watch. I also give credit to three other films here starting with Terence Fisher’s ‘The Curse Of The Werewolf’, with Oliver Reed. A very enjoyable script and nice to see an explanation of how the werewolf got created. A very different film to those Lon Chaney Jr. movies from the 40’s that I also enjoyed. Next up is Michael Anderson’s ‘The Naked Edge’, with Gary Cooper, in his final film performance, and Deborah Kerr. Exciting engaging thriller. Finally I have Margaret Rutherford playing Miss. Marple, in the first of four films she did in the 60’s. This first one is ‘Murder She Said’. A good performance from Margaret Rutherford and a very enjoyable film. There is also Frank Sinatra and Spencer Tracy in 'The Devil At 4 O'clock'. A disaster / adventure film. I need to check out 'Underworld USA', a film I have not yet watched. On your TV Series choices I also enjoyed ‘The Avengers’ when I was growing up and its follow up TV Series, ‘The New Avengers’. That wraps up 1961 for me. Have a great week.

You have so many TV shows I've never heard of, the only ones I am familiar with here are The Avengers and the Dick Van Dyke Show (dim memories of watching reruns of that as a kid). I had never seen Breakfast At Tiffanys until finding the DVD in a thrift store, I was surprised how dark and melancholy some of the subtext was, the Mickey Rooney character being a regrettable misstep. Excellent episode Randy. Not a particularly great movie year for me. My favorite by a wide margin is The Hustler, the only film from 1961 represented in all four of our top 100 lists. I do enjoy Breakfast at Tiffany's (minus Mickey Rooney), The Misfits and One-Eyed Jacks also. Kudos to Sophia Loren for her performance in Two Women. As far as TV, I agree with The Avengers and Dick Van Dyke Show being the best of that year. I remember being a fan of Top Cat, the animated series that debuted in 1961.
