Some Cyrix chips had a slightly faster instruction pipeline than their Intel counterparts, and lots of times were faster WINGUI Office machines, there were even GUI accelerated video cards that worked better with Cyrix chips but would fall behind in floating point intensive software.

Windows NT (2000 and XP) is not very happy when change some things in theirs hardware configuration, mainly the chipset and in the particular the storage interface adapter. So, the best is to use an PC with the same (or close enough) chipset or to install on the machine that you will use. Why did you not use a optical drive connected to the machine? Just had you hooked as primary slave or cable select on the same IDE cable. Another option is to delete everything from that CF card (except the system files: command com, io.sys and msdos.sys) and copy the i386 folder from the Win2k CD on the CF card and run setup. If you can, may upgrade the memory to 256M or 512M (the integrated graphics take some memory) for windows 98. Also for linux the memory can be maxed to maybe 1G if the RAM is DDR1. Another useful upgrade can be using an small SATA HDD or SSD (laptop formfactor) with an IDE to SATA adapter and a IDE CD/DVD (even a slimline one with an adapter); that 8G CFcard is quite small and with few installed games it will fill up quickly, even if you use an USB stick for storing the game iso files. Another option can be to use one USB port for a cardreader with USB port that was used on the front panels in 2000s, that way you can use a 64G SD card for secondary drive to store iso files and have a front panel USB port, leaving the rear USB for a keyboard/mouse combo. Very nice project, I would like to find a similar board to make such a lovely mini retro PC.

I thought someone would have already given an answer as to why the speed difference varied so much, and in some cases didn't seem to be an improvement, but nobody has that I can see, so here goes. In that generation of CPU, there was a concept called the FSB or Front Side Bus. This is how the CPU communicated with the rest of the system, and all other things being equal, a faster FSB means it can communicate with the rest of the system faster. The other concept relevant here is the clock multiplier. This is basically how much faster then the FSB the CPU operates internally, and THIS is where the clock speed is derived from. This is where the 2 in DX2 and the 4 in DX4 come from. The DX2 chips (both of them) run on a 33MHz FSB and have a x2 multiplier. So 33MHz externally to the rest of the system, doubled to 66MHz within the chip. The DX4 chip runs on a 25MHz FSB and has a x4 multiplier, so quadrupled to 100MHz. Importantly, the CPU needs to go through the FSB to interface with ANYTHING external to the CPU itself. That includes reading and writing to RAM, the gfx card, the HDD, literally everything. The only time the extra speed of the DX4 100 can stretch it's legs, so to speak, is when that clock speed is more important then how fast it can communicate with the rest of the board. For this reason, a DX2 running at 80Mhz will absolutely wipe the floor with a DX4 at 100MHz in most cases, as in that case the DX2 is running on a 40MHz FSB. I'm not sure what CPU options are available for the DOS card, but yes, in some cases, the effective speed of a DX4 100 will be SLOWER than a DX2 66. But it really does depend on the application, how much cache there is inside the CPU, etc. There is so much more to it than the clock speed the chip is rated at.

We need more modern software developed for the new standard that Vampire/Icedrake sets. I would be quite happy to go out and buy an Amiga 1200 and an Icedrake .. having said that I'll see what new games are already out we might as well face it the Amiga is BACK and the AGA chipset is actually gonna get warmed up for a change it was never fully kind of put through it's paces. Super stardust and the rendered scenes in Microcosm might have been somewhere close to showing what the Amiga is capable of ..MORE of that please

Nice video and nice find on this machine! So glad you got it working too. I can still vaguely remember when this machine was on sale here in the UK in PC World. The Gateway computer we had at the time had a Voodoo 3 3000 in it and I remember being impressed that Packard Bell were adopting 3DFX cards in their machines. I had no idea though it was integrated onto the motherboard though and had no AGP port for future expansion. I would have been more dissapointed at the time if I'd realised that, however, as others have stated in the comments, I do find it kinda cool now from a nostalgic point of view. It's also amusing that it's a mATX motherboard in a relatively large ATX case. I always liked the Packard Bell cases of that era too. The Club series cases were like a smaller mATX version of these Mulitimedia series cases, and the Platinum series cases had a more serious look about them, which I felt gave them a similar look to Dell and Gateway of the era.

I can tell you how to easily "fix" the video glitches that you see in your video. Actually there is a config option for this. If you set JUMPER "J1" this should fix your glitches. I can explain you the technical reason behind this: The combination of Icedrake and Amiga 1200 - has 2 video out signals. And both video outs can slightly drift. If they drift then the Computer can always only in Sync to one of them and the other will have to "look" wrong. A very good example as you showed is Frontier. The CPU will reset colors on the screen depending on the screen position of the MonitorBeam. If both Monitors are not 100% in sync - then one display by design will have false colors. You can fix this in two ways: a) Use only 1 video out and tell the card to sync on the video out you want b) enable auto syncing of both video outs.

I would imagine nostalgia being the main factor, but other than that, for me at least, I just find it interesting exploring the various technical solutions that early computing platforms came up with. Both in terms of software and hardware. Before everything got more or less standardized as it is today.

There is no practical use for a fast Amiga in today’s world, anything that requires high processing speed such as video editing or 3D modelling work is better tackled on a modern computer nowadays, and the vast majority of classic Amiga games don’t benefit from acceleration (with the notable exception of 3D titles and a handful of games & demos which were developed with accelerated Amigas in mind). These modern accelerators for vintage computers are labours of love for a vintage computing platform many people are fond of, they are for the fun of pushing old hardware to beyond its limits.
