    youtube has been slowly sending me down an amiga rabbit hole and holy crap these computers blow my mind. i’m only 17, so i never had an amiga, i haven’t even been near one before, but the stuff they’re capable of and what enthusiasts can still make them do is insane. awesome video!

      30 years after getting my first Amiga they still amaze me too! Even though modern machines are literally thousands of times more powerful, there’s something magical about pushing the limits of this ancient hardware.

    Nice Vid 👍🏻 A couple of things to point out. 1)… Worth buying Ibrowse 2.5.5 as 2.4 is fastly becoming obsolete for browsing due to the age. 2).. Ibrowse 2.4 will not support anything higher than Amissl 3.6. Again Amissl 4 and above is only supported in version Ibrowse 2.5 or higher and you will be able to browse more webpages. Also fingers crossed 🤞🏻regarding the RapidRoad, they really need a powered USB hub connected or they are prone to blowing the 5v rail on the RapidRoad. Also the RapidRoad isn’t that fast due to using the Amigas clock port. To get the most out of a tower system it’s worth investing in a Elbox Mediator board and some PCI cards. 😉

    god that took me back. YAM - yet another mailer for email, iBrowse and AWeb, TCP stacks, MIAMI. Fun fact, I had several Pcs(Win 98 and 2000) and Amigas back in the day, and all connected via an ethernet hub. As much of a faff as it was initially, once set up it was actually easier to configure than Windows 10 and 7 networks which i have now........

    • @kaitlyn__L
      @kaitlyn__L 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Nny indeed, I only use wifi for devices that don’t have an ethernet jack (phone, tablet, etc). Going wired whenever you can for stationary devices also massively improves wireless performance for those portable devices, due to minimising the size of the collision domain.

    • @kaitlyn__L
      @kaitlyn__L 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Nny fair enough. I’ve dropped my smartphones lots of times with no real damage (couple of scuffs maybe) but usually only a foot or two drop, not like 4-6 feet drop. More power to you though for knowing what you want.

    • @kaitlyn__L
      @kaitlyn__L 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Nny ah yeah, up a ladder especially would destroy it. I dunno it the paving slabs I’ve dropped mine on are concrete or something slightly softer but.. I do know I am generally more careful and certainly don’t have a job that would put my phone at risk on the regular. And it often lands on wood or gravel instead of paving too.

      The TF cards look to be a great alternative. Be aware though that the Firmware is constantly being upgraded to fix issues. So as long as you are technical enough and prepared to play around and not expect everything to work first time then they are a good cheap alternative. There are also other cards available like the Vampire V4 Icedrake, Typhoon and the fabled Warp060 card. Remember these are being made and built by enthusiasts and not by manufacturers like the days of old 😉

    Hi, great follow-up video! If you give up on the Apollo, I'd be much interested in purchasing it, as I have a identical card in my Checkmate 1500-cased A1200. Unfortunately, my card has *severe* battery damage to the PCB, with a lot of crappy repairs done to it, but otherwise working. My idea was to migrate the working parts from my card and get yours working... Thanks again, and keep up the fantastic work.

    Where did you manage to get the rapid road for Amiga 1200 ?

    • @OddObsolete
      @OddObsolete  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve actually had it for a few years, and I got it from a reseller in Sweden if I remember correctly. Not sure where you can get one these days, looks like it’s currently out of stock in most places. Your best bet might be to get a used one from eBay or similar.

    • @cullmaster7361
      @cullmaster7361 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Individual Computers are the manufacturer and they do have a shop. But as I’ve pointed out you really need to use a powered hub for them and they are quite slow through the Amigas Clockport connection. Have a look around also for Amiga resellers in Europe who might have them for sale. Avoid! RetropassionUK though. Terrible customer service and the owner likes to blame his customers for faults 😳🙄

  • @stbagn
    @stbagn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Whatever you do, do not hot plug anything directly into that rapid road. This device is very sensitive to voltage surges. At the very least use a high quality powered hub. As for speed 600-700kb is pretty much the most it’ll do over a stock clock port. Not quite usb 1.1 even.

    • @OddObsolete
      @OddObsolete  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So I’ve heard. There’s some conflicting information about this issue out there. Jens Schönfeld says it’s caused by improper 5v regulation and that ATX and MeanWell PSUs are usually to blame, but others say it’s an ESD issue and that the device should have been able to handle it. Thought about mentioning this in the video, but since I don’t really know what is actually true, I didn’t want to potentially spread any misinformation.

    • @stbagn
      @stbagn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@OddObsolete The MeanWell PSU comment is rich. This is likely from my busted RapidRoad that admittedly Jens did replace free of charge. It needs to be specified however that the particular MeanWell PSU I am using is medical grade and therefore liable to perform to exacting standards. So which would you rather trust? A world renowned PSU manufacturer with decades of experiences and a *legally binding* medical grade spec or Mr Jens Schoenfeld maker of admittedly high quality but still hobby grade devices? I like Jens, his devices are fantastic and I certainly spent my fair share of money buying a good collection of them. I certainly intend to buy more in the furture but the failure rate of these RapidRoads is a little more than anecdotal.
