  • Part two of the retro gaming firewall saga! In this video I show you how I designed and built a case for the rescued firewall motherboard.
    Here's the first part of this project: • Fixing And Turning a B...
    And here you can find the CAD files for the case design: www.thingiverse.com/thing:515...

    With this talent, we can preserve retro hardware with new purpose. Every other build is a raspberry pi inside a case.

      Except mine is about 4" tall with a matching monitor. And of course it runs doom. Lol. Still fun.

      the correct choice would be a Boba-fett helmet replica, but the tower is better than I could do, so I can't really criticize.

    That case design is perfect. Great job. Maybe try reprinting the case in ABS and vapor smoothing it sometime down the road. Although you'd likely have much worse warping issues. Another options would be to try smoothing it with resin or wood filler, but then you'd also need to paint it.

    This just sings to my childhood nostalgia , that piezo beep , the startup sounds , and the fact you have it directly recoding the audio is golden for audiophiles like me :P and perfect timing with my own , Excellent work and great design on the case , it really ties the whole 90 beige theme together since the other firewall appliance chassis was really killin the vibe but wow !! All around total retro revival with full hardware support. Cant beat it ... shame i only have super large watchguard appliance i could do the same too so thanks for the inspiration i may do some rethinking !! But this curbed my win98 nostalgia for a bit , Happy New Year!

    Yes, the tower design is a perfect fit, however if you could manage to reconstruct the case from sheet metal, a desktop layout probably could be better, as you could place the monitor on top. Of course that also would require some reinforcements for the case itself.

    • @squirlmy
      @squirlmy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it would be really funny to make it look exactly like the speakers.
      The CRT on the desktop didn't work well unless you are tall, and/or you are comfortable putting an adjustable seat fairly high. The original monitor set-up was made for business, after all, not gaming.

    I built a micro8088 and kind of want to design and 3D print a case for that some day. Maybe an AT case because I like that one much more than the XT and my micro8088 has a NECV20 in it. Hmm... maybe I can be legit and make it the XT case.

  • @Afrobomination
    @Afrobomination 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I see you switched from midi music to sound blaster some time between this and the previous video. Good call. I've always thought sound blaster sounds better than general midi. It sounds so much darker. Guitars sound cheap on midi. It's better with a synthesizer to actually make midi sound good, but there's still a charm to sound blaster.

    You should totally try toying with some AMD dual core E series based terminals - they go for about 5€, usually have 2 slots for DDR3 up to 16 GB (some have PC other have laptop slots), on the one I tried there was an early UEFI bios and I could assign up to 4GB to the built in HD 6 series GPU. Sadly I never tried running XP on it before giving it away but if you could run XP it would make for an ultimate mini PC for XP games, the built in GPU should easily run any XP games the only problem would be actually booting the XP - you can easily find all the drivers but some machines running AMD APUs from that era would just give me a bluescreen on boot. I really like the dell terminals cases - they look exactly like an average 2006 PC just scaled down 10 times :D

    • @OddObsolete
      @OddObsolete  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that’s an interesting idea! I recently picked up something similar, but with an Atom CPU and Nvidia ION2 GPU. Apparently it has been used for driving digital billboards. Have no idea if there are any XP drivers available though.
