Picked up this United Brass engine for really cheap recently and discovered the motor was burned out, so replaced it with a Pittmann clone made in Japan which matches the engine. Now it runs good and pulls four cars around the layout. Only odd thing is, where's the boiler front?

Finally got the traction tires glued on and now this Hudson can finally pull its weight. Oh also I accidentally melted the Marx signal, which is sad. Oops.

@@MygrandpasTrain Thanks! Can I ask you this, do you pop the top off of the loco, the tender, or both? I am new to this and I worry I am going to break something. The one I just bought ran for 10 secs then completely died, no lights, no movement of any kind.
I just bought a similar one and have been trying to figure out how to get it to run.
Did the Gilbert Hudsons have tender switches ON BOTTOM during pre war era?
There may have been a version with a sequencing reverse unit which would have the same lever on the bottom. The DC relay reverse did not but had a pin hole on the top for manual reverse. Others had been converted to DC operation with either a permanent magnet in the motor or a bridge rectifier. DC conversions would not have a lever. Some also had a smoke in tender unit which may have a lever as an on off. you may find the Gilbert HO website interesting it shows all the variations of the engines. gilbertho.org/rolling_stock/rolling_stock_number.htm

The Diesel is an E7 - they have square side windows - the E8 and E9 have round side windows. The GP7 looks like you could paint it for Burlington Northern or Milwaukee Road. Is the tube in that Flyer power pack a half-wave, or full-wave rectifier?
The GP7 will be your latter guess. The tube is probably halfwave but I really have no idea. I found a place with a tube tester so I will check that and several other tubes!

Hoping you will see this as it’s been some years now! My five-year-old was gifted this train today by a model train enthusiast and he promptly broke off the coupler. Is devastated. What kind of coupler can I buy off amazon to replace the one that broke off? Thank you
Hi, thanks for watching. these couplers are still around, but Amazon and Ebay will price gouge you. I would go for Ebay over Amazon. Look up "TYCO Horn Hook Coupler" Or If you want, send me an email at mygrandpastrain@gmail.com. I may be able to send you the parts. This can help me determine if the coupler is broke or the whole frame is broken.

I save this in my collection of AF repair videos. I don't currently have one of these transformers, but have had in the past and would not be unhappy should another come into my possession.
This one has had a LOT of use, the circuit breaker is quirky, sometimes trips too soon, now it doesn't at all. And the control handles are loose.

I have some Grandpa-like trains I found on eBay and have refurbished them as best as I can, and they run, they're heavy but are better than the plastic.
you should try the new bachman dcc version with better build quality
I never had any 4-4-0 in HO...I believed they would be too small to do much. Seeing your in action I now regret that choice. It is super cool seeing those tiny engines with a few cars in tow.
I've seen lots of people have issues with brass engines. The one here was a breeze to service. I'd love to assemble a brass engine kit, but I would prefer one in S or O 2 rail. The Rivarossi can pull a decent size train.
Nice video. 👍👍👍👍 I would like to find a couple of period wood coaches for my Mantua Diecast R.I. & P. R.R. 4-4-0. It has a plastic drive shaft with ball and socket connections at each end with the drive motor in the tender. My intention would be to run it strictly as a museum/scenic/special excursion train once in a great moon.
The Rivarossi is my dads and somewhere at his house are a set of era correct plastic coaches I used to run with it all the time
@@MygrandpasTrain I did find a R. I. & P. Wood stock car and an old time Mantua R. I. & P. Combination caboose with silhouettes in the windows.

I still have my childhood H0. American Flyer #442 Hudson, GP-7 with ringing bell, and Lionel by Athern F-3s with rubber band drive.
The Bachmann sounds sick. Look at what they did to Williams 0 gauge. United brass Made in Japan? Looks and sounds like quality. Rivarossi Made in Italy? Surprisingly good.
Good deduction Watson 😃 I thought it would be fun to compare cheap junk to something high quality. Sadly Bachmanns are notoriously bad.

What an idiot. Has tutorial and shows you how to do it completely wrong. The trestles don't snap in. They go between the ties of two pieces of track, and then you use the clips with the kit to hold it tight. Your missing the clips Temu Mcguiver.

Always nice to see locos returned to service especially steamers. A few detail parts and it’s off and running! 🏃♂️ Ya wouldn’t necessarily need Tyco parts to replace missing details, would ya? After market detail parts might work or you could even make up a straight stack using styrene tubing or ABS plastic from a hobby shop, I’d think. Or, ya could go with a balloon stack, couldn’t you? Your call, but nice acquisitions by any means. Lucky you!
For both engines I am planning to keep the smoke stacks original shape. I have a method of cloning an existing one, since that will be cheaper than the only seller on Ebay who has factory parts for $25 a piece!! Either 3D printing or resin casting.

What a neat park! I notice with one exception the track crews have done a fantastic job with the rails. Does the park operate any steam? Is the other line under repairs a similar scale?
The newer trains have one ALCO Santa Fe diesel with freight cars and one 4-4-0 steam engine with passenger cars. All the park trains are diesel powered I believe. The new trains are quite a bit larger, seat two per row instead of 1.5, but the track is only 1/2 or 1" wider (from 16" to 17" or so). I believe they were also donated or partially sponsored by someone to the park, which is nice, but the old ones are still my favorite. The originals were also painted for Chicago Northwestern, then I think Wisconsin Central, then just painted Red, now painted blue. One engine has a flame job paint on it, which I thought was cheesy.

It's been awhile since I've been to Bay Beach. Nice to see they have a 2nd train loop. Nice job on the video.
When they replaced the original trains was a sad day for me. The new ones are shiny and all but the old park trains are special and I was glad to hear when the put the second loop in. Although i thought it was odd they didnt put the new trains on the west loop

Very nice set. 👍👍👍👍 Runs very smooth. I have this set. Mine had a chunk of rubber missing from one pull mor wheel. I replaced both with NOS pull mor wheels.

I have three of these, this one the newest. I discovered the other two both have brass bushings and they are all worn out. This one's getting new decals soon!
@@MygrandpasTrain paean. Yes, according to Austin Birkey, only the link couplers had brass bushings.
@@ronalddevine9587 Absolutely correct. KC means no bushings on any locomotives. I never heard of an explanation why. My 370 is the only diesel I have with factory bushings. My 21910 had bushings installed by Precision Flyer Repair, but he no longer repairs trains. I need to find someone for two GP-7's and one two motor PA.

Hello, I picked up a 9b transformer from American flyer at a yard sale in very rough shape. It has a yellow wire that is disconnected, it is connected to the left hand bulb socket with the terminal posts facing away from you. The other end of that wire is what is disconnected,and there isnt any indication where it should be connected. You wouldn’t have the schematic of that transformer, I’ve searched and can’t find one.
