The second box looks to have quite a few 8-pin ICs. I would be curious to see if they were 555 IC timers or op-amps. The circuit could be traced out and the IC numbers researched to see what kind of components they are as long as the information has been scratched off of the tops of the ICs. In the current day, a person would just use an Arduino with a SD card reader along with an amplifier using MP3 files to basically perform the same thing this box currently does. Hopefully, you will be able to find more information to make this set up perform well.
I imagine this was very expensive to produce. Someone spent alot of time engineering sounds from all those chips just to mimic a diesel locomotive. What i might do with this is get a bluetooth tx and a mini speaker so the sounds can fit inside an engine or boxcar
wow, those are super cool synthesizers right there. Sounds a bit like the drone at the beginning of the dolby thx sound. I just found cvpusa online and I think it's the same company, they make EasyDCC and have been around since 1974! maybe you could contact them. Cheers.
I'd love to if I was skilled enough to reverse engineer this. About the best I can do is post close up photos on my community page. Also I've been looking around for any info on the manufacture CVP comes up with wireless control for garden scale. I cant even find advertisements in old Model Railroaders!
Technology certainly has improved since the 1980’s. Modern DCC sound is much more realistic.
Very interesting. I really like the realism it adds to your layout. And, as you mentioned...if you add a subwoofer it could really sound convincing.
Very cool! To my ears it ads a SciFi type sound. I like it.
I had the same reaction to Box# 2 WOW.! Great interesting Video.! 👍Thanks
Sweet boxes,. You tube just happened to recommend your video I'll have to check out some of your other vids. Thanks for posting!
Thanks for watching. Most of my trains are vintage American Flyer and classic HO

I did email them actually. This device was from 1989. It was a DIY project found in Model Railroader magazines.
I hope that you can post some schematics
