Visiting Scotland’s Ghost Town
Scotland's Ghost Town? Well, that's at leat how some newspapers call Clune Park Estate in Port Glasgow. So we had to visit ourselves, especially as there are plans to regenerate the Estate.

Are these Kelvinside accents? Is this a case of 'middle class intellectuals ' demonstrating their pity for the lower orders? Hardly profound, to put it mildly.
I heard Robert Street will be completely demolished in 2025.An evil place full of jocks without the full shilling.
That's pretty soon that Robert Street is to be demolished
Lovely video ... Thank you so much. Your aerial views of Blair Castle were beautiful with a great choice of music in the background. You seem to have a great relationship together with lots of humour and laughs which in turn made me laugh out loud too. I've only just come across your channel but now subscribed and looking forward to joining you on future travels. Thank you again and Happy New Year for 2025.
Thank you so much! We're glad to have you joining us on our trips😊 Happy New Year for 2025!😊
The first group of houses in the video weren’t part of the Robert Street/Clune Park Estate . Wilson Street and Montgomery Street are council houses., which is why you can see that they are still occupied. The Clune Park Estate was private housing and went into decline and disrepair when rogue landlords started buying them up and not maintaining them. The resource centre behind the school was still in use , but the school went on fire recently (hence the damage to the church) so not sure if it’s still being used. The estate was built on a former orchard which is why there’s an apple on the ship sculpture at the small play park at the beginning of Robert Street.
That's really interesting, thanks for explaining!
my mum grew up the top end of the port and I spent almost every Saturday of my childhood there too , my Granda worked in fergosons for most of his working life
Ah it's great to hear from people who lived there😊
What an absolute dump...it has nothing going for it...other than the road out.
Think the council agrees with you
A bit harsh that. There’s a lot worse than Port Glasgow. We don’t need much when we’re 30 minutes on a train to Glasgow city centre. I don’t know what people expect when they visit the small towns.
I saw this island on a map (in an atlas, a real book), and found my way here. What a beautiful island. Absolutely stunning.
Agreed-it's a beautiful island😊
Escaped from Robert Street and uk years ago.Live in Holy Russia.Christian country fighting evil yanks and vassal ignorant Brits.Holy Russia prevails.Do any Brits have morals?
Yes it's overhyped there's nothing their it's just like any wee place nothing their and only about half a mile long you go all that distance to have a meal in a pub it's a terrible place to visit
Yea, Pitlochry is quite small. But I do like it😃
Since early eighties old tenements most were private cheapest property back then run down past it's date to serve
Oh really? That's interesting to know! Thanks for watching😊
If driving from Glasgow it's port Glasgow,Greenock, then Gourock, the Clyde shipyards had deepest ports world wide, west coast always rain
Ah thank you! ! I didn’t know the Clyde shipyards had the deepest ports😊
Hi l love to see you u need friends send me email
I was in cardross residential school, stunning you have the train station right at the Clyde. Love it up there miles better than Motherwell
Sounds like a lovely place! I’ve only been to Cardross on the train, but it’s a lovely journey. 😊
@terrifictraveltales Great wee village, not much in it but kept tidy and clean no gangs or anything.
Thank you so much for watching our video! 🙂 If you would like to support the channel, you can buy us a coffee on our Ko-Fi page: ko-fi.com/terrifictraveltales
I'd heard of Port Glasgow but not the ghost town thing. It would be a shame if the red brick buildings were demolished rather than restored. The grey buildings less so. As you imply, definite Eastern European vibe with those.
I'd heard of Scotland's Ghost Town, but didn't know what to expect. I agree, it'd be a shame if the red brick buildings were demolished.
Key safe!! So the council and police don't need to break in when the junkies ither overdose, die or lose the keys, etc, 😊
Thanks for clarifying! Definitely makes more sense than for Airbnb😃
A key safe is for carers who attend vulnerable people.
When you come back, it will look like Pakistan ,You won't be welcome, ither😢
I lived at number 31 Robert street back in the early 90’s for a couple of years, it wasn’t that bad, there were good folks and bad folks like everywhere else. The flat roofs were always a problem, it was like a swimming pool ! i had water dripping through my top flat concrete ceiling and there was nothing could be done about it. Lots of good Memories of times there with people who are no longer here or near. x I hope in the future it turns out to be a nice place to live again.
Ah it's interesting to hear someone's perspective who has lived there! 😊 I too have lived in a place with a flat roof and it was like a swimming pool 😀
KNOW THIS AREA EXTREMELY WELL GREAT PLACE TO EXPLORE.
Yes, it really is an interesting place!
You are about 10 yrs too late to see The Steps when it really was good.
Ahh really? What a shame🙈
I enjoy your videos keep up the good work
Thank you😊 really appreciate your support!
Great video love the realism, we've all been in these situations and it can be a bit stressful
Thank you so much! Yea, it sometimes feels the best plan is to have no plan!
Thank you from The Netherlands for the nice and interesting video! I heard these new Nightjet trains will also start running Amsterdam <> Vienna in a few months, can't wait to try them!
Ah really? I've been hoping to catch the DFDS ferry to Amsterdam and now that there is a nightjet service from Amsterdam, that makes it even more appealing 🤔. Thanks for watching 😊
@terrifictraveltales why do you see it as overhyped? I live here. There's more to Pitlochry than a dam and a theatre. If you watch Travelling Tourist's video "A Pitlochry Day Trip" you'll learn a lot more. It's a 7 minute video packed with info.
Got to 3:20 and thought, you’re going the wrong way !! Cos that my house😳😂😂
Haha no way😂😀
The local guys who run the car wash come from Albania, when I chat to them they all miss the weather far too little sun here in the north of Ireland
I don't blame them-the weather was amazing😃
lan, get oot the gutter.
Nice visit to south castlemilk😅. Should get the 3C bus from George square to Strathaven and visit a lovely town that has a load of history and only 30 mins from Glasgow
Thank you! We'll add Strathaven to our 'go-to' list😊
You don't seem to be ending your trips in a pub there days. Is that just a summer thing?
Haha, I might need to reintroduce at some point.
Good vlog. Went to Linlithgow in June for the perambulation of the marches ceremony. Like a gala day event. Nice historic town. The John Muir path runs from Dunbar to Helen's burgh.
Ah, that's pretty interesting. There is so much history in Linlithgow. We'd like to visit again in the summer, so we might catch the perambulation next year.
Really interesting. I'll put this on my next visit list. I travel from Oxford to Scotland every year to visit different places. Always public transport, so appreciate your train trips.😊 It is weird how they build absolute monstrosities amongst beautiful old buildings isn't it. Plenty of that in Oxford!😊
We'd love to visit Oxford! Do you have any recommendations? Yes, agree. It's weird how some building pass planning when they're such historic buildings nearby 😊
@@terrifictraveltales Do you mean hotels or places to visit? Plenty of both.
Places to visit😊
@terrifictraveltales In Oxford itself many of the colleges are open at certain times. Some charge, a few are free. 3 of my favourites are Magdelen College with it's amazing buildings, grounds and deer park. Christ Church is stunning. I think you need to book tickets for college, but you can walk in Christ Church meadow for free and watch boats. I also love Merton College, but there are many to choose from. The Botanical gardens are worth a visit. There is also the Ashmolean Museum (worked there in my youth). It's stunning and has a nice, if some what expensive cafe. The Oxford Museum is a Natural History Museum, plus Pitt Rivers Museum. Wonderful architecture inside. The covered market is quite interesting, although it's lost a bit of it's quirkiness to my mind. That said, lots of cafes and shops under one roof. Lots of other beautiful buildings including the Sheldonian and Radcliffe Camera. There are of course walking and bus tours. I can't tell you what they're like as I've never done them. Depending on the length of your stay there are places just outside Oxford such as Woodstock and Bleinham Palace. I think the Palace is quite expensive (not been in years!) But the grounds are stunning and not too bad for those on foot. Also other interesting villages a bus ride away. There is loads to see and I've only mentioned a few. Some things are pricey, quite a bit is free. Happy to give views on something you're interested in and I've not mentioned. You can also get a bus to London fairly cheaply from Oxford if you want to visit that hell scape!🤣 I'm not a fan.
Oh wow, thank you for all the information. It's much appreciated😊
Absolutely love Linlithgow!
Linlithgow is beautiful, planning on visiting during the summer😊
@terrifictraveltales make sure you go to The Four Marys pub!
Nice video. I live in Polmont, 5 mins away by train, and have never visited the Palace, so will need to go! The comments about the guttering made me chuckle 🙂
Thank you!😊The Palace is worth visiting. We were surprised at how good it was. 😊
Welcome to my stomping ground, I live on the south of Loch Lomond Arrochar isn’t what it used to be, they had a chippy ran by a woman from Surrey, a little newsagent for treats, a burger van thing and a manned petrol station You sound German/Dutch
The Loch Lomond area is beautiful! Think there is now the Cù Mara Restaurant that opened a few years ago. You're right - I grew up in Germany😊
Drumchapel was a village at one time too.
You're right-Drumchapel used to be a village😊
I’m 74 years old and I grew up in drumchapel but never knew it was a village ye learn something new every day
Really interesting. That said, so many towns and cities throughout the UK are collections of villages that eventually merged into one. They reckon London is like that. What's unique about this one is it retains a village feel.
That's interesting about London! You're right, Carmunnock does feel like a village😊
You should check out Glasgow's forgotten village - Grahamston. You might get some interesting material for your vlog.
Thank you! Will need to add Grahamston to my list😊
Eilann Garbh. The rough island. Ee-lann gar-iv.
Strange accent
In what sense? Sounds like a normal middle class lowland accent to me.
Maybe because I grew up in Germany😃
I cycle up to Carmunnock a lot to do some loops of nice lanes around the farms. I did wonder if you were on an e bike when you said 23 mins and were standing in the Gorbals! It's a lovely village. If you fancied going back again to do more exploring, take the train to Thorntonhall and cycle to Carmunnock, it's 2 miles away. It would involve cycling on quiet lanes mostly and 1 short bit on a busier road. Thorntonhall is a nice sleepy village too albeit it comes under South Lanarkshire.
My Google maps seems to be quite optimistic.😃 That sounds like a good idea, will need to go again with Iain! Thanks for watching 😊
@terrifictraveltales happy to help with logistics planning around Glasgow involving cycling!!!
Thanks
Thank you very much!😊
@@terrifictraveltales I grew up there sixty years ago.
Google read my mind, I was just thinking of having a stroll round Carmunnock tomorrow.
Haha what are the chances! Hope you have a great walk tomorrow 😊
@@terrifictraveltales I've just checked the weather forecast, might have to postpone until Friday. :)
If you had walked in that gate at number six you would have seen a seating area of the mitchell restaurant.
Ah that's interesting. I'll need to go back and check it out the food looks great.
@terrifictraveltales 👍
Milngavie is worth checking out some nice cycling around Murdock park, water works etc
Milngavie does look like a great place to visit. I'll need to check it out. Thanks for watching 😊
@@terrifictraveltales, go there by train. Lovely station.
Speak up can hardly hear you 😮
Thanks for the feedback 😊
Scotland's full of villages n Edinburgh's the capital not Glasgow
Will need to check out Edinburgh's villages
Yet another pavement cyclist - GET ONTO ROAD WHERE YOU BELONG, AND STAY THERE!!!
Yep, as soon as you said Kings Park, I knew you'd confused Carnunnock Rd with Carmunnock. "Hope it's not hilly" it's the bloody biggest hill there is!.
Hahaha I get lost every single time I go anywhere 🤣
@terrifictraveltales 🤣 I used to live in that area, Kings Park was our local park and Croftfoot was a local "stomping ground". Also there used to be a fancy Chinese restaurant in Carmunnock, I was in a few times, think it's now Mitchell's though. Thanks for the memories 😉
