    Greenock, Gourock and Port Glasgow were three separate towns and became Inverclyde in around 1975. Much of our district's history is not visible now, and the horse sculpture and the angel type sculpture are recent additions in the town and play no part in our history. Two things you missed on the Esplanade were the John Gault fountain and the home of Henry 'Birdie' Bowers, who was in Captain Scott's expedition to the Antarctic. There is much of interest and a bit more of our history in the McLean Museum but it only opens 4 days each week.

      Thanks for pointing out - will need to go back to the Esplanade and visit the McLean Museum 😊

    I went on the Waverly as a kid, when she still did the trip from Ayr to Arran. Saw my first Basking Shark on that trip. That was in the late 70s. Nice to see she's still going.
    Lovely video

    It was very Unusual seeing the Ticket barrier actually OPEN in Central, I travel most weeks from Ayrshire, I'm supposed to change at Pollockshaws West, HOWEVER the On the Hour trains don't Stop after Barrhead.
    Meaning the System has been programmed for that, only the Half past the hour trains stop at each before arriving at Central.

    • @terrifictraveltales
      @terrifictraveltales  7 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      You'd think the system would be updated there surely are many others experiencing the same.
      I'm always relieved when the barrier opens and I don't need to ask for help 😀

      @G4RY1159 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@terrifictraveltales Most of the Staff are on the ball getting the barrier open for me, some weeks I have bike with me and get off the train last so I don't hold anyone up, plus the timing for my 2nd train is 10 mins away so the only issue is the barrier not recognising why I've not changed over at P.West.
      I would if the train stopped 😅

    The prices are so low because no one wants to live there. That includes Cumnock and various other paces in cheaper Ayrshire. It's a shame rcause they have been bustling places in the past. There at also much more expensive places which at very popular.❤

    Considering that you reached Greenock, I thought you might have ended up at Clune Park in Port Glasgow. In fairness, I don't know whether you can still buy flats in that horrendously deprived area and Inverclyde Council have built flats just a short distance away for Clune Park residents to move to. Like many UK towns, the centre of Greenock, as you pointed out, has quite a few wonderful bits of architecture. Unlike many UK towns, it still had free parking in most of the central area when I was last there in August 2022. I presume that the viewpoint you ran out of time to visit was Lyle Hill. The view across the Clyde estuary to Argyll is fantastic and, if they are playing at home, you can look down to watch Morton playing football from about a mile away.

    good video and channel. Those main towns in inverclyde are "affordable" for a reason. No employment, terrible and expensive commute, very high drink and drug use, generations of citizens on benefits, fairly high crime rate. Its a shame, there is very decent people there and i have always loved that area myself and still do. However there is a lot of problems and due to its industrial heritage and main purpose now effectively gone with the modern world. Through no fault of their own and a global shift in industries, It has led to generations (20/30yrs) of decline within the population and its main housing areas. Its one of scotlands ironies (to me at least) as the surrounding areas are beautiful, and gets better the higher up you go, however, so does the roughness. try taking a vista in when up the bow rd or clunebrae on a friday nite!
