About the lack of shops at the seafront, not worth it because 8 months of the year the seafront is dead, Scottish summers is four months at best to have weather for people to go to the beach in any numbers. Also the seafront is quite a bit away from bustle of the town centre, Ayr was built around the river for commerce rather than the seafront, unlike Largs or other small coastal towns where they are built at the water's edge but still part of their town centre zone.

That's interesting- wasn't aware Ayr was built primarily around the river. Thanks for sharing 😊

I remember leaving the railway station and seeing a music shop opposite called “Ayr Guitar “. Best name ever for a shop! We went in early spring, it was quiet then also.

😂That's brilliant! We saw an Indian restaurant called Ayr India with a plane logo outside of the restaurant. Can't fault Ayr's humour

Brilliant video guys. Iv been in Ayr for 30 years now and still think its an amazing town, so much of Scotlands history here. Vandalism has destroyed so many of the historic landmark with everything being set on fire and i totally blame South Ayrshire council for such a historic towns decline. But one thing is it certainly isnt the worst town in Scotland. The Auld Kirk you visited was the inspiration for one of the world's most famous ghost stories and one of Robert Burn's most famous poems Tam O'Shanter and was a ruin when Rabbie was a boy playing there. Thank for such a nice scenic view of Ayr.

Ayr used to be a great shopping town, but like most towns there are loads of empty shops due to huge out of town shops out & loads of drug related problems .

Ayr isn't what it used to be, but it's definitely not the worst seaside town in Scotland, it's not even the worst on the Ayrshire coast!

Really enjoyed your vid of Ayr. Like most Scottish seaside towns, Ayr has seen better days but IMO Ayr is no where near the worse seaside town in Scotland. Ayr races, Burns, huge beach and Prom, gardens, stones throw from Prestwick airport, Royal Troon on its door step and loads of local history and excellent public transport links to Glasgow. The town centre is in decline but I've never known Ayr to be a top shopping destination.

Back in the 80s , my hometown of Airdrie , ran bus trips to Ayr for the day every Fair Monday. Whether it was sunny or raining we headed for the beach regardless. We made our own fun joined by many friends & neighbours. Picnics on the big park before heading down to the beach. Later on fish n chips . The alcohol flowing also . I have brilliant memories made in Ayr & I would recommend visiting if ye haven’t already.

Having had two one-week holidays based in Ayr over the last seven years, I would rate it as a pleasant place to live but not necessarily a visitor hotbed, particularly if you can afford one of the mansions off Monument Road. It is a handy starting point for visiting Culzean Castle and and places northwards along the coast like Troon, which is more of a seaside spot. There is a national cycle route from Ayr to Irvine and beyond, which hugs the coast, giving views to Arran, and then goes past the perimeter fence of Prestwick Airport. The old Butlin's camp at Heads of Ayr seems to be still popular, albeit now part of Haven and rebranded as Craig Tara.
Like most kids who went to school in Scotland, I was fed up with getting Burns' poems rammed down my throat and I have never read his work since I did my Highers. However, being a life member of the National Trust for Scotland, I have effectively paid the entrance fee for all NTS sites. I therefore went to the Burns Birthplace Museum half-thinking that I might be in and out in ten minutes but I was there for over an hour. I found out there that he had so many illegitimate children that a DNA exercise might indicate that 50% of Scottish people are descended from him! The cottage where Burns was born was just like loads of other old cottages I have visited in the UK and I was only there for a few minutes. The walk down to the Brig o'Doon is attractive, as was shown in the video.
The two big parks in the south of the town (Rozelle and Belleisle) appealed to me as pleasant places to stroll around in the evening. The flowers in the walled garden at Belleisle are very attractive. The town centre is nothing to write home about, although a walk by the river running through the town to the sea just north of the centre is another pleasant evening stroll possibility.

Iain can relate regarding Burns it definitely took some convincing to get him there.
We had hoped to visit Rozelle park but unfortunately couldn't make it, but it gives us a reason to revisit as I'd like to see Culzean castle too!

    Don’t want shops on seafront
It’s so near the town and there are a couple just off the shore front
They planned to make it a mini Blackpool and nobody wanted that!!
Lack of small individual artisan shops and closure of multinational stores severely affected the shopping
It has a crazy one way road system that needs scrapping
    More manufacturing would be great
In short a return to the past

I'm Ayr born and bred and still living here so I've seen the town depreciate into it's current sad state. My heart always sinks whenever a video is posted of Ayr because I cannae help but wonder what faults people are going to pick up next. The fact that the weather was against you just goes tae show how dreicht the town is.

you should try visiting Stevenston dont think weve got a hotel (probably because no one wants to stay) Nice quiet beach small cafe on the beach and local takeaway will deliver to campervans parked up There is a huge mural of Robert Burns painted on the cliff side and a nudist beach that has been there for over a 100 years Been classed as the worst place to visit in Scotland Lived here 25 years Not forgetting Sandylands holiday resort Completely fenced off from the locals who can be a bit feral The caravans are sited right next to the slaughterhouse Lovely smells in the summer

I'm from Ayrshire and the town has really went downhill but then in this digital/out of town supermarket age not many towns haven't been affected. Actually far prefer Prestwick for a wee day out. Nicer pubs and restaurants.

@terrifictraveltales we often go down for a few drinks and something to eat. Get off the train then 2min walk to Red Lion pub. From there just a case of making your way down the main street. Even having a Spoons hasn't adversely affected the place

I was in Ayr recently between 4 and 6pm and hadn’t been for a long time. I found Ayr noisy, pestered by a battery powered road sweeper at Boots at the iconic clock tower. Ayr streets would have been faster cleaned by a man with his brush and shovel with a lot less drama and not achieving not very much. If Ayr is able to keep hold of its quintessential High Street buildings it has hope. If they’re neglected and replaced with modern design Ayr is finished.
Ayr’s High Street changed to a one way Street decades ago and sucked the life out of it. I remember the Ayr of the 70s and 80s; Ayr’s glory, charm and authenticity is with its stone buildings. The Tam O’Shanter building in your film was being re-thatched so hope there. I left a Ayr to the noise of Responders hanging in the early night air. Pity Ayr didn’t have its fishing boats still employed.

    • @terrifictraveltales
      @terrifictraveltales  22 วันที่ผ่านมา

I agree that the historic high street buildings play an important role in maintaining Ayr's character and appeal. It'd be a shame if this was lost.

No way is Ayr the worst seaside town in Scotland. Fair enough there’s no shops on the front like other towns such as Largs and Troon, it doesn’t need to have shops on the front to rate higher IMO…I mean we’ve got enough congestion with consumers with CARS like flies round shit just to buy a doughnut! How about having shops in the Effin HIGH STREET like there used to be instead of it looking like the zombie apocalypse these days. Always liked Ayr, it saddens me to see the town looking the way it is now but it still has much going for it.
