😅 latin american spanish got rid of the sound "z/c"- Just pronunce "s" always. However you will have to memorize if a word is written with z/c or not. - Arg spanish went further and turned the sound of "ll" (lluvia) into "sh" or "y" (yo) sound, that's from portuguese (Brazil) exposure. I think it is simplier and faster to speak than spanish from Spain. Moreover is common to hear toddlers to speak with the "z" sound always. Later they learn to pronunce the "s" and "rr". So for latin-americans to hear the z sound in spoken spanish is at least weird. Not to mention that only Spain uses the "vosotros" (you), latin american uses "tú" and "vos" (vos changes the entonation and form also)

Putonghua will replace Cantonese as Hong Kong’s official language (and English will cease to be an official language), but Cantonese will continue to be spoken at home among Cantonese people, just as other provincial dialects are spoken at home on the Mainland."

Cantonese definitely gives me the vibe of south East Asian language family (Thai, Khmer, Vietnamese, Lao) Mandarin i feel like Is what westerners would imagine in sound when they think ‘Chinese’ and very distantly sounds minorly similar somehow to Korean in very subtle ways.

As a british guy, the Chinese community in the UK up until the late 1990s were all hong Kong chinese, and the movies, songs were all Cantonese. You then just assume that this is 'Chinese and so it becomes the normal as to what your perception of chinese culture is.'. I then remember listening to mandarin back in the mid to late 90s for the first time as we suddenly had students from China itself coming to the UK. and thinking to myself, what the hell is this? Is that the main Chinese dialect/language spoken.?!..then suddenly realising Cantonese is this minor regional languange/dialect ...when you thought that was the main chinese language all your life!! (Up until that point )

@LingoKev Hey Kev, I really enjoy your videos. This is going to sound strange, but I'm Mexican American. Like you, my native language is English, although I am 3rd generation living here in the United States. My Great Grandparents are from Mexico, and I speak spanish fluently, although not taught by my parents, but at school (High School and College). I find the Mandarin language very interesting and I want to know what would be the best way to learn Mandarin. I know that Mandarin is your second language and your primary language is English. Do both your parents speak Mandarin? I have a pretty good ear for words and pronunciation, but still would need help. I don't I want to learn how to write the Mandarin language (with all those little squiggly lines, and bars, and cross bars etc.) now that my friend would be hard to learn....lol. Any help that you provide would be much appreciated. Thanks Kev ....... Rick

Hey @rickrangel, thanks for your comment, it means a lot! Both my parents speak mandarin, so I learned both at home and in classes (in saturday school). It's awesome that you are interested in learning Mandarin! If you don't want to learn the characters (which I agree is a lot of work), I would recommend you at least learn pinyin (look it up if you don't know what it is) as that will at least help you with your pronunciation and allow you to take notes about what you learn. Best of luck and happy studying :)

@@lingokev Awesome Kev! I will look into "pinyin". I want to thank you for at least sending or pointing me into some direction in learning the Mandarin language. It seems futile, but I'm determined to learn. I have but a few Chinese friends, of which they speak Mandarin, Cantonese and Shanghainese (or a combination of these) with English being their first language, and they are no help when it comes to me learning the Mandarin language... LOL. All kidding aside, I truly want to thank you Kev. ..... Rick

I was surprised by "meme". Not that the Spanish pronunciation doesn't follow the Spanish rule but rather that I have heard many English words that have been newly created carried directly over into other languages. I hear many Spanish speakers use words like OK or You-Tube with an English pronunciation.

I would say that your cantonese (as a language) is superb in the way that you are thinking in cantonese rather than doing translation in your mind. Your control of your muscles of articulation and voice projection is much better than many cantonese speakers. Of course you can improve your pronunication. You sound much better than many foreign teachers of Cantonese

The convention is both a blessing and a curse for someone already fluent in Mandarin and written Chinese. I can understand Cantonese shows just by reading the subtitles, but unfortunately it's going to hamper my ability to match the spoken Cantonese to a concrete written form. Having true Cantonese subtitles will definitely be great for actually forcing oneself to learn Cantonese!
