67 Days in the Desert: The Gear We Swore By (and Almost Swore At)
มุมมอง 4.5Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Hey! After two months of hiking across the Utah desert, this is some of the gear we used to make it possible. We filmed this video (June 2024) in Zion National Park right after finishing the Hayduke. We were definitely tired haha, but we wanted to film a gear video immediately after the hike because it felt like the best way to get a fresh, honest evaluation of the gear we used and how it held ...

      @dirtyjarhikes 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hey thanks so much!! It was quite a journey editing the whole series, almost as adventurous as the hayduke itself haha We have the montbell versalite (www.montbell.com/us/en/products/detail/2328169) It’s a good all around jacket, but it would definitely wet out in a lot of rain. We use them as heavy duty wind jackets and another layer for staying warm while sleeping. If it was going to rain more, packing a thicker rain jacket would be better. Thanks again for the kind words :)

    Imagine if you will, as little as 25 years ago, we didn't really know anything about Navigation and GPS. People really Used to get lost in the wilderness., and die out in the desert, sometimes within a mile of their Automobile. Times have really changed for the better. Technology has given the freedom that People have always desired.

    Hi! Just watched this last night and I think it says something about a YT video that was over 2 hours long... you did such a good job at telling the story that not once did I think about the time. I think you did an amazing job with the footage and editing not just for content but for the aesthetics of the story and environment. I appreciate the balance of the story; not too much minutia about your every day but enough to make me feel like I was walking with you. That hike appears to be extremely hard yet your attitudes were amazing throughout. If anything carried you through, that had to be a huge part. Thank you SO much for making this. I can't stop thinking about it.

    Nice notes on gear. I have to check out the dance pants. Question: any comments on Tyvek versus the thin light pad for the way you used the thin light pad?

    • @dirtyjarhikes
      @dirtyjarhikes 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, dance pants are fantastic. We find so many uses for them. The thin light pads weigh less than the tyvek and does pretty much the same thing (used as a butt pad), so we opt for that. Tyvek is 10x more durable though, which is a trade off. Either one works great for a butt pad/thing to organize stuff on top of! We feel lost without a thin pad while hiking haha

      We’re glad you had fun following along! The longest carry we had was 6 days. It would have been 9 days if we didn’t have a food cache. That happened a couple times. We don’t think we could have done the hayduke without caches. Some people do it, but we’re not that hardcore haha

    I enjoyed following you along on your adventure on the Hayduke. But I have to say, whenever I watch these outdoor adventure videos, and the people involved are so in love with the natural beauty, including the animals and the birds and all the wildlife… Then they can’t wait to get into town and eat a cheeseburger. And you talk about hoping they have hotdogs at Phantom Ranch. Your ignorance concerning the inhumane treatment of animals is profound. And your ignorance of the massive negative impact on the environment caused by animal farming is also profound. You love to walk around in nature. Perhaps you should think about your actions and how they affect the environment that you claim to love so much, and Perhaps how they affect your sense of compassion

    Great video, did you use a compass and map for navigation? I’m going out there in March and have a couple of gps tracks I hope I can trust. GPS tracks have been hard to track down. I just don’t see me using just a compass and map. That would be lame.

    • @dirtyjarhikes
      @dirtyjarhikes 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      We used Gaia gps with skurkas line. Having a gps track is important because the topo lines on a physical map in canyon country can get kinda confusing. If the intervals are 80-100 feet it might not show cliffs very well. Jupiter has a track jupiterhikes.com/how-to-thru-hike-the-800-mile-hayduke-trail/#My_GPX_Track Definitely bring the map and compass tho! It’s always fun to double check your surroundings. Most of the navigation is hike/climb down to a wash, walk the wash, then climb out. None of the gpx lines are totally accurate, you will have a general idea of where to get to, then pick the best way. Excited for you to see the duke!
