Last will be the great traverse of the Alps, which I most look forward to, but I have to get into better shape to really enjoy that.

I’m a big Edward Abbey fan so the Hayduke has always seemed like this grand romantic trek that I don’t think I have the stones to ever attempt lol. Congrats on making it out there!

That sand out from the Parunuweap to Checkerboard Mesa is no joke! Anyone reading this, plan for a sandy slog and make sure you have enough water. Fill up in the canyon before making that trek. I hiked down the Fat Man's Misery slot canyon from Checkerboard about 20 years ago and you have to make that journey to the canyon, and then back once you finish the canyon. I didn't refill my water! Being at one of the hottest times of the year in southern Utah I got dehydrated under the blazing sun and passed out on an uphill slope of sand and woke up under the moonlight to make my final couple miles back to the truck. Rangers were waiting at the Zion entrance gate with my wife. Hydrate!
Daaang! That’s a crazy experience. You’re 100% right, it’s dry on the mesa and the navigation is convoluted. How did you like fat man’s?? We thought the virgin river was beautiful. Jarhead got some really bad poison ivy climbing out of the canyon. The vegetation was really thick
@@dirtyjarhikes So I'm not sure why the Hayduke guide says that you hike up and out of Parunuweap through Fat Man's Misery cause FMM is actually a technical slot canyon that you hike, and rappel down. It looks like the GPX that I got off of CalTopo for the Hayduke shows the exit coming out of Parunuweap just west of the actual FMM canyon. If you tried to exit out of Fat Man's then you would eventually come to some really cool chasms, climbs and a rappel that you wouldn't be able to get up and you would have to turn around. It usually has pools of water in it as well. One other video that I have watched on the Hayduke, the guy actually went up FMM and figured out that it wasn't the correct way out and he ended up camping inside of the canyon. I'm not sure if the location that I've seen people climbing out actually has a name other than part of the Hayduke route. Here's the link to the Fat Man's Misery technical slot canyon: www.canyoneeringusa.com/zion/technical/fat-mans-misery Other than the approach and exit route through the sand, it's a fun canyon. There's a metal plaque mounted in the sandstone wall that is somewhat hidden if you don't know where to look, or what you're looking for, and it is dedicated to John Wesley Powell and has little bit of historical information about his exploration and the naming of the canyon. It says, " Powell named this canyon from the Paiute Indian word Parunuweap which means “Roaring River Canyon”. Dedicated Sep.30, 1972. That sucks about the poison ivy! I'll keep that in mind when I travel that section. I have a feeling that when I go through Parunuweap and that route to Checkerboard will bring back some old feelings. Thanks so much for sharing your journey and for the motivation!

Yeah the exit on the hayduke is right before fat man’s….we wish we could have gone further back, but you’re right, that would have been more technical. Neither of us had been across southern Utah before and the landscapes blew our minds 🤯🤯

Well then I can’t wait for your amazing video creations from the GDT! My favourite parts: stunning Waterton and the Barnaby Ridge, Aster Lake and the Northover Ridge, Whistling Pass, the Rockwall, the Iceline and the Kiwetinok alternate, Owen Creek to Nigel Pass, Jonas Shoulder, the Skyline. Make sure you are prepared for colder and wetter conditions than in the US, then you can be quite comfortable. Learn lots about grizzly bear behaviour. Thank you so much for sharing of yourselves and your adventures💖

Very cool! It was fun to walk and film that desert landscape. The colors were beautiful at golden hour. We thought it was tough! The route didn’t have a lot of elevation gain, but it made up for it with long water carries and just general water anxiety. Have you done much desert hiking? Thanks for watching :)
What a trail! I'm 70 and think I'm over the hill to attempt this, expecially alone. But it sure is beautiful. The sound was really good. Did you pack $1,000 microphones? 😆
It was a great trail! It’s definitely worth visiting some of the places along the hayduke. The land around the towns of Hanksville and Escalante was really neat. We had a $60 external RODE mic, but it kept coming unplugged and ruining audio haha. Lesson learned. We do some basic sound editing after the fact which helps. That cool you noticed! We definitely spend time on it.

Hey! Thanks for watching, that’s awesome. The umbrella felt good in the Grand Canyon. It’s usually 7-8 degrees cooler under it. Jarhead doesn’t like the sun on his face, so he actually uses it a lot. Salami and sharp cheese keeps for a least five days. It’s a lifesaver haha. The sawyer squeeze is great when paired with a smart water bottle. We usually backflush it every week. We’re excited for winter activities. Do you have any Colorado adventures planned?
Yes, we think about it sometimes. There's a lot of different ways to go. You could probably hike from Arches to Zion and make it 80% different the second time around. Have you spent much time in Utah?
I’ve only driven through Utah. Some day. I’m planning to do the main corridor of the Grand Canyon in the spring for a few days, if I get a permit. Kevin Fedarko’s book, A Walk in the Park, is about him and Pete McBride thru hiking the GC east to west. I imagine there’s some Hayduke overlap. I wonder if the route is published anywhere. Thanks again.
That sounds really cool. The “New Hance Trail” or the “Tanner Trail” would be good places to drop in on the south rim. The south kaibab trail is good too, but more crowded. We listened to Kevin Fadarko’s Emerald Mile and that gave us a much deeper appreciation for the canyon and rafting the river. We want to check out A Walk in the Park next.
@ for magnificence, the well known places, Monument Valley, Grand Tetons, Arches National Park, Canyon de Chelly, Bryce, the North Rim, White Sands, Canyonlands and many others. Every state there has gorgeous places. But we like solitude; the best experiences we had were simple, on remote, less known places without people around; driving at night in the desert, a lightning storm far in the distance, hiking on a wash for miles, not a footprint to be seen, swimming in the Colorado river then lying on a sand beach in the sun…
@tegucigalpa2 beautifully said :) driving on a network of desert roads in the falling light behind the Henry mountains while caching food is a moment of peace that really sticks
That’s a great question. We took the camera out one time while bushwhacking 25 miles down the Escalante River. We took out our phones a couple times, but we were pretty miserable haha. We also wish we did more interviews, but sometimes it’s awkward to ask. Have you photographed out in the southwest? The light was fun to chase around the canyons.
@@dirtyjarhikes I actually live in St. George! Ive done a bit of hiking at many of the destinations along the haduke but had no idea the route existed. only finding out about the "trail" when jupiter started his series, and soon finding yours too. I will likely never attempt until it ends up becoming a more distinct trail and less of a wandering in the right direction. I did coyote gulch april of this year and can imagine doing rivers like that for hundreds of miles absolutely infuriating, and when trying to get miles down difficult to pull out a camera. I got a insta360 ace action cam with a handy quickrelease shoulder strap mount, but thats really only helpful for vlog/walkby kind of stuff.
@Rydoge7 the insta360 looks really cool and minimal. We use the sony zv1s. They are very compact and still get a crisp image. Saint George must be pretty nice this time of year! Perfect for hiking. This summer seemed brutal with the heat. We think about going back to capital reef a lot.
Yeah, funny enough, after spending my whole life in Utah, I’ve never been to capitol reef. With Zion next door and the other parks it’s often written off as the worst park in the state to visit.
@Rydoge7 the burr trail switchbacks in capital reef was a favorite. It’s a killer view of the waterpocket fold. The nearby town of Escalante has some good pizza if you find yourself out that way 👍🍕

We had a $60 external RODE mic, but it kept coming unplugged and ruining audio haha. Lesson learned. We do some basic sound editing after the fact which helps. That cool you noticed! We definitely spend time on it.

The umbrella felt good in the Grand Canyon. It’s usually 7-8 degrees cooler under it. Jarhead doesn’t like the sun on his face, so he actually uses it a lot. Salami and sharp cheese keeps for a least five days. It’s a lifesaver haha. The sawyer squeeze is great when paired with a smart water bottle. We usually backflush it every week.

Yes, we think about it sometimes. There's a lot of different ways to go. You could probably hike from Arches to Zion and make it 80% different the second time around.
Have you spent much time in Utah?
I’ve only driven through Utah. Some day. I’m planning to do the main corridor of the Grand Canyon in the spring for a few days, if I get a permit.
Kevin Fedarko’s book, A Walk in the Park, is about him and Pete McBride thru hiking the GC east to west. I imagine there’s some Hayduke overlap. I wonder if the route is published anywhere.

That sounds really cool. The “New Hance Trail” or the “Tanner Trail” would be good places to drop in on the south rim. The south kaibab trail is good too, but more crowded.
We listened to Kevin Fadarko’s Emerald Mile and that gave us a much deeper appreciation for the canyon and rafting the river. We want to check out A Walk in the Park next.

@ for magnificence, the well known places, Monument Valley, Grand Tetons, Arches National Park, Canyon de Chelly, Bryce, the North Rim, White Sands, Canyonlands and many others. Every state there has gorgeous places. But we like solitude; the best experiences we had were simple, on remote, less known places without people around; driving at night in the desert, a lightning storm far in the distance, hiking on a wash for miles, not a footprint to be seen, swimming in the Colorado river then lying on a sand beach in the sun…

Along the whole journey. Where did you wish you got more footage?
That’s a great question. We took the camera out one time while bushwhacking 25 miles down the Escalante River. We took out our phones a couple times, but we were pretty miserable haha. We also wish we did more interviews, but sometimes it’s awkward to ask.
Have you photographed out in the southwest? The light was fun to chase around the canyons.
@@dirtyjarhikes I actually live in St. George! Ive done a bit of hiking at many of the destinations along the haduke but had no idea the route existed. only finding out about the "trail" when jupiter started his series, and soon finding yours too. I will likely never attempt until it ends up becoming a more distinct trail and less of a wandering in the right direction. I did coyote gulch april of this year and can imagine doing rivers like that for hundreds of miles absolutely infuriating, and when trying to get miles down difficult to pull out a camera.
I got a insta360 ace action cam with a handy quickrelease shoulder strap mount, but thats really only helpful for vlog/walkby kind of stuff.
@Rydoge7 the insta360 looks really cool and minimal. We use the sony zv1s. They are very compact and still get a crisp image.
Saint George must be pretty nice this time of year! Perfect for hiking. This summer seemed brutal with the heat. We think about going back to capital reef a lot.
Yeah, funny enough, after spending my whole life in Utah, I’ve never been to capitol reef. With Zion next door and the other parks it’s often written off as the worst park in the state to visit.
@Rydoge7 the burr trail switchbacks in capital reef was a favorite. It’s a killer view of the waterpocket fold. The nearby town of Escalante has some good pizza if you find yourself out that way 👍🍕
