Best documentary I’ve seen in years. I like how there was no talk about how “millions of years ago”, this and that. The BEST!! After watching this I have to get me one them packs! And one them shirts!! And that tent is banging!!
So Dirty r u pretty much the official navigation lady or was there more both of u than seen in the video ?? I'm sadly NOT tech//phone user savvy. So a navigator would be great 😅.
Thanks for the support!! We are using Gaia GPS to navigate. You can add a lot of map layers to Gaia and we really like the “slope angle” layer to see where the drop-offs and cliffs are (to avoid haha)
You two put together one of the top hiking documentaries I’ve seen yet. I found myself smiling a a lot as you described your adventures and you really had my attention as you described difficulties and challenges. The two of you together put a real human aspect is a beautiful scenery and wonderful people you met. I think I’m going to try to put some sections of the Hayduke on my bucket list.
Hey this is great, we really appreciate it. The duke had been on our bucket list for a while and it was cool to see it all come to life. Southern Utah was mind blowing. Happy hiking :)
Hi! Just watched this last night and I think it says something about a YT video that was over 2 hours long... you did such a good job at telling the story that not once did I think about the time. I think you did an amazing job with the footage and editing not just for content but for the aesthetics of the story and environment. I appreciate the balance of the story; not too much minutia about your every day but enough to make me feel like I was walking with you. That hike appears to be extremely hard yet your attitudes were amazing throughout. If anything carried you through, that had to be a huge part. Thank you SO much for making this. I can't stop thinking about it.
Hey, thanks for making our day! This made us smile a lot. We watched some of your videos. Southern Utah, especially around Capital Reef, would be a great place to motorcycle. You should check it out!
I followed the series and now this. Hats off to both of you. As I watch the documentary, I reminisce my own experience hiking and the joy a person feels when you reach the end of the journey. I am getting old but I do what I can hiking the trails and mountains of Utah and Wyoming. I can't wait to see your next adventure.
It’s special to build memories in the wilderness. They are such a source of inspiration and joy. Working on these videos has really increased our gratitude for the whole experience. Thanks for following along (and happy hiking out there) :)
Watched every episode while you guys were out, now to see it condense down to this beautiful film is just wonderful. One of the best, thanks for sharing and taking us along:)
That’s really cool! It was fun to put it all together and see it flow like that in a different way. And now we’re gonna try to do a similar thing with all our Sierra footage from this past summer. Can’t wait to share!
l watched each of the short segments you made of this hike, but I just had to watch the documentary. Guess I can't get enough of the Hayduke. After all, it's other hikers suffering and not me. Such beautiful country, and now in the new year I'm planning my spring itinerary for Utah and the Grand Canyon, inspired in part by videos such as yours. Love seeing the two of you dealing with the elements along the way. And the way DA soldiered on with that Achilles heel, you are one tough girl! Thanks so much for sharing your journey.
Utah and the Grand Canyon in the spring sounds amazing! It’s such a cool feeling looking up at the canyons walls. We know you’ll have a lot of fun. Thanks for the support :)
I love this documentary! A great way to teach people about a not-so-hiked hike, and super interesting to watch! What was the longest food carry you had to do on your journey?
We’re glad you had fun following along! The longest carry we had was 6 days. It would have been 9 days if we didn’t have a food cache. That happened a couple times. We don’t think we could have done the hayduke without caches. Some people do it, but we’re not that hardcore haha
I've saved to watch tonight on my tv. I love this area but have never backpacked it. Leaving out water? Wow that's intense. And no trails just across the wilderness.
I love your video! I'm from Utah and have hiked/backpacked much of it. The high altitude cold/hot dry air and the terrain with very little water make this trail extremely difficult.
Heck yeah! Backpacking is Utah was amazing. That really cool you’ve hiked a lot out there. It’s a special kind of quiet in those canyons. Thanks for the good vibes :)
Thanks this is fantastic! well done! ... peanut gallery comment if you like Olympus like I do.. bring a tube of E6000, works to hold that garbage together, and the little rubber inlays at the bottom. they're great at comfort, bad shoe design for longevity.
That E6000 tip is great! We’ll definitely bring a tube of it next time to preserve the garbage a little longer. We heard the Olympus 6 don’t rip as bad as the 5.
Hey thanks so much!! It was quite a journey editing the whole series, almost as adventurous as the hayduke itself haha We have the montbell versalite (www.montbell.com/us/en/products/detail/2328169) It’s a good all around jacket, but it would definitely wet out in a lot of rain. We use them as heavy duty wind jackets and another layer for staying warm while sleeping. If it was going to rain more, packing a thicker rain jacket would be better. Thanks again for the kind words :)
Great video, did you use a compass and map for navigation? I’m going out there in March and have a couple of gps tracks I hope I can trust. GPS tracks have been hard to track down. I just don’t see me using just a compass and map. That would be lame.
We used Gaia gps with skurkas line. Having a gps track is important because the topo lines on a physical map in canyon country can get kinda confusing. If the intervals are 80-100 feet it might not show cliffs very well. Jupiter has a track jupiterhikes.com/how-to-thru-hike-the-800-mile-hayduke-trail/#My_GPX_Track Definitely bring the map and compass tho! It’s always fun to double check your surroundings. Most of the navigation is hike/climb down to a wash, walk the wash, then climb out. None of the gpx lines are totally accurate, you will have a general idea of where to get to, then pick the best way. Excited for you to see the duke!
Imagine if you will, as little as 25 years ago, we didn't really know anything about Navigation and GPS. People really Used to get lost in the wilderness., and die out in the desert, sometimes within a mile of their Automobile. Times have really changed for the better. Technology has given the freedom that People have always desired.
You’re totally right! It really blows our minds how detailed the mapping software is these days. You can gather a lot more information faster to make safer decisions out there. You still have to know how to read a map haha, but it does open up more freedom/possibilities
So I get like 30 mins for lunch everyday at work and yall just walked thru the mud in the 5 mile stretch of water. Yall making me laugh so hard I look crazy here at work
Nothing 2 crazy!! Jarhead carried his greens in a mason jar on the appalachian trail and Dirty Avocado came from eating an avocado off the ground on the pct 🫙 🥑
I enjoyed following you along on your adventure on the Hayduke. But I have to say, whenever I watch these outdoor adventure videos, and the people involved are so in love with the natural beauty, including the animals and the birds and all the wildlife… Then they can’t wait to get into town and eat a cheeseburger. And you talk about hoping they have hotdogs at Phantom Ranch. Your ignorance concerning the inhumane treatment of animals is profound. And your ignorance of the massive negative impact on the environment caused by animal farming is also profound. You love to walk around in nature. Perhaps you should think about your actions and how they affect the environment that you claim to love so much, and Perhaps how they affect your sense of compassion

Let’s just say Jarhead would still be walking in circles in the Red Benches if it wasn’t for me 🤣
My wife and I loved the documentary!! What app are you using to navigate the hayduke? Thanks for the journey

Your comment put a smile on our face :)) the sierras were stunning and we’re excited to share soon
I’ve watched a lot of documentaries hiking videos so on this is definitely one of the best . Amazing job . You guys make a great couple.
That’s super cool to hear. Now you gotta get out to Utah and do some exploring :)
Beautifully done! Mother nature is awesome!

What an awesome adventure...! Thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching! Happy adventuring to you out there :)
Incredible video and awesome attitude shown throughout! I really enjoyed it, thank you for sharing your journey.
Thank you for the nice words, it means a lot!
Nice footage. The Needles District is my go to for a few days in the backcountry. Utah has so much to offer for us hikers.
Yall are awesome. I had no idea that yall were doing a full doc. This is great!
We appreciate the support! It took 10 million hours to export but was worth it in the end 🤠

The silence of the desert is something very weird, it’s so loud yet so quiet. So easy to get lost out there.
Weirdest place on earth :)
Really enjoyed the series and the full documentary! Lots of valuable info ❤. You were using a Mont Bell rain jacket. What version is that?
Hey thanks so much!! It was quite a journey editing the whole series, almost as adventurous as the hayduke itself haha

Very cool!
Would love to do this, but I am not sure if I could drink that water, no matter how good the filter was 😂
That water was pretty bad. We should have packed out some lemons, maybe that would have helped with the taste haha
quote, "That's one big ass ditch". I recently learned that the Canyon is larger than the state of Rhode Island.
Haha that’s a cool fact. You definitely feel small at the bottom of the canyon

Enjoyed watching. Glad you bleeped out the foul language. But amazing you have no problem blaspheming God’s name by using His name in vain. A pity.
