R100GS PD: A Ride Round Abberton Reservoir
มุมมอง 396ปีที่แล้ว
This is a short ride from home to to Abberton Reservoir and back. I made this video in March 2016 to try out my GoPro Hero 4 Session using a separately recorded audio track. I used my iPhone to record audio on a remote mic, because the camera audio suffered from too much wind noise. The remote mic was situated under my seat. I then patched in the iPhone audio to the movie when editing it all on...

    Biggest problem with bike driveshafts is the lack of lube on the sliding shaft when the splines disappear giving no drive. BMW are very bad for no grease.

    Hi Moto Phoenix; I have recently purchased a Quota 1100 ES, and if you have other videos on doing maintenance on the Quota, it would be helpful to me. Here in the USA, dealerships do not work on motorcycles which are +10 years old. My Quota is from 2000. I have the Owner's manual but it is always nice when someone with mechanical aptitude and a good setup demonstrates how to do it.

    BMW electrical systems are the worst . It would be great if you told us the trick on making a puller bold out of a section of 6 mm metal . I'd do it but I forgot the proper length of metal .

    Nice work. Need to fix the stripped threads on my final drive too. Previous owner apparently liked high torque. What are the dimensions on the time sert you use. Outside is M15 and 1,75mm threads?Inside is M12 and 1,5 mm threads to fit original size plug. But how long/deep is the time sert? I measure it should be around 9mm to leave room for the seal ring, or am I wrong? Thanks for sharing the video.

    There's a sharp bend of the coil where it connects to the slip ring. There was a remanufacturing supplier who rewinds them taking out the bend making the rotor more reliable

    4 years later and I'm here again...Sorry to be a pain again...R100GS (1990)...Haven't run the bike since last year and bought a new battery yesterday...Issues with the charging again...Battery light stays on (but dim) during running...I checked the battery posts while the bike was running but the voltage does not go up...I checked the rotor and that was new 4 years ago and is ok using your test...The actual alternator came off with a little persuasion but I noticed that the wiring mesh on the back is slightly loose although not too bad and not unconnected...I did run the multimeter on the 0-200K (same as for the rotor) and used it to see if the wiring on the actual alternator was ok and I got a reading from the red and blue but not the white one...One thing I did notice is that my wiring on the rotor is different from the one in the video - the red and blue wires are the other way around on mine...I'm hoping I didn't get them mixed up when I did this 4 years ago (I dont think so) ...Anyway...Any ideas...Thank you for any help

    Great video. Although I am an electrician and mechanic I found the explanations, in lay-person terms, to be most helpful for those weekend and not so experienced troubleshooters. Excellent job. My son and I, who have worked on hundreds of motorcycles, are going to be troubleshooting the charging system on a recently gifted R65 this morning so this crash course will come in handy even for us.

    Dear moto phoenix! I have a question. I have an r80gs 1990. When my rear output shaft bearing had to be changed, i realized that it was just one side closed (gear side open). Is this originaly possible? I assembled the same way, but im not sure it is good.

    I must apologise as I could not have been more wrong about the missing bits. They are of course inside the stanchion! My bike has 2 right hand stanchions and the preload spacers have been cut to about 3cm to make them fit. Its a long story but it turns out that the springs are 550 mm long and they should be 450 mm long which is causing most of my problems. I have also bought the correct left hand damper rod so feel like I am beginning to make some progress. thanks for your prompt reply to my last comment. John

  • @tileproplus
    @tileproplus ปีที่แล้ว

    Very interesting video. Where did that caliper come from? I bet it must be amazing compaired with the original! The pipes are different on each fork leg, one being for damping and the other bring for rebound. There are some parts shown on the real oem parts page that are missing form your bike. I have watched a couple of other videos and they do not have these parts also. I was wondering if you could explain this as I am a bit confused. I am in the process of sorting out my front forks on my R80 GS from 1992 and my bike does not have these parts either. Any help or explaination would be graratefully appretiated.

    • @motophoenix5951
      @motophoenix5951 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi tileproplus, The caliper came from Harrison Billet engineering: www.billet.co.uk/index2.html?home.html~mainFrame It was already on the bike when I bought it in 1995. It does work well, particularly since I replaced the original brake disc for a cast iron replacement from Motorworks. I am not sure which parts are not there that you refer to as missing. If you could give me some idea (eg part numbers from the oem parts page you refer to) I will look into it.

    Interested in your observations about K&N air filters. They’re always promoted as better than stock. Might have to have a gander inside my R75/5 airbox now as I haven’t been in there for a couple of years. There’s a K&N in there

    • @motophoenix5951
      @motophoenix5951 ปีที่แล้ว

      My personal experience of having used K&Ns is that they are not effective at preventing dust from entering the engine. When I had one on a trip to Morocco many years ago I discovered a layer of dust particles in the tubes from the filter to the carburettors when servicing the bike after my return. In comparison tests they fair badly, example: www.nicoclub.com/archives/kn-vs-oem-filter.html/amp
