  • In this video I strip an old "bean can" I had lying around to remove the Hall Effect device in preparation to fitting a new replacement. My brother Bob believes the one in his RS is faulty. Usually the symptoms manifest as cutting out once the engine has warmed-up. There can be other symptoms too. Part 2 to follow.

Keep on!! Thanks for all your super useful videos!!! Oil & Springs front forks change (renew) and speedometer disassembly about checking would be top class videos too:)))

Thanks. Fork oil change already on here, but a video on fork seal replacement will be made in the near future I hope. No plans to do any speedo work on my BMW. But I do need to repair my Triumph speedo, so that could be possible video material.

Dicky Yrrep thank you. Regarding the tachometer, I think they are electric aren’t they?. Try checking and cleaning the connections and the cable condition starting at the feed from the coil at terminal 1(2 black cables one goes to the tachometer).

    Great video.
Question…does it matter if the hall sensor replacement is unipolar or bipolar?
Can’t find any information online or on TH-cam.

Hi there, it's Masoud from Zanzibar thank you very much for the video.
I want some advice on a problem that I have on my airhead.
One day as I was riding and my right hand spark plug cap came of and unfortunately I was running on one cylinder for about 4 minutes.
I have replaced the ignition black box however the park plugs ignite intermittent about 7 time rapidly after cracking the engine. I was wondering if you have come across such problem or if you have any advice it will be much appreciated also I have managed to get the hall effect device I just want to be sure before I replace it Asante Sana in advance.
    Best regards
    Masoud

Hi, Lovely to hear from someone in Zanzibar. However it is difficult to know where to start without more information. You could try checking the plug leads. If they have metal shrouds on the caps remove these, since sometimes they cause electrical shorts. It may be a good idea to replace the leads and caps altogether if replacements are available.
Also take a look at the ignition coil. If you have a single coil with twin plug leads fitted, inspect it carefully as these have a habit of cracking and this will cause a misfire eventually.
Hope that helps. All the best.......

Sorry Marcos, It was a while ago and I don't have any information other than my brother bought it on eBay. I'm sure that if you look you will find one.
      Best regards.....

What year, make and model is this part from?
My symptoms are misfiring, loss of power, dropping RPMs, but only around 4000 rpms, and only in 4th and 5th gear. I can also rev past it to 5k rpms and it smooths out. Fairly sure it is ignition system, yet nobody can tell me what's wrong.

This part was fitted to a 1984 R100RS. As far as I am aware all the oem hall effect devices fitted to airheads are the same.
Hard to say what is wrong without seeing your bike. Symptoms of failing hall effect device can be misfire, hard starting especially when warm. Usually they fail completely soon after displaying these symptoms.
Another common misfire cause is a crack in twin lead ignition coils. But there can be many faults that can lead to a misfire.

@@motophoenix5951 All respect! That, 'bean can' was not easy to disassemble. Mine is a 1997. "especially when warm" is a good clue. I ride is Tucson!
