  • Replacing the illumination bulbs in a BMW R100GS PD digital clock is not as straight forward as it should be.

Hey Moto it's me 441rider, historicsteamtv BMW novice. I have my R100rt
and R60 running like tops in the big mountains here just put a vid up.
Do you know what I need to do to jimmy in a bypass starter button off
relay on a /5 r60? I am touching open cased contacts now LOL! with a c19
rubber glove bit to keep rain out LOL! Hope you are well.

Hey, how ya doin? So I've very little experience with /5s, but looking at the wiring diagram in my Haynes manual; if you want to wire in another starter button off the relay, it would appear all you have to do is remove the existing cable (brown with black tracer) from terminal 31b on the starter relay. Then wire in a new cable from 31b to one terminal on your new switch and then wire the other terminal on the switch to earth. And hey presto!
If your /5 has been updated to a more modern style relay, terminal 86 should be the substitute for 31b if it has been wired correctly, but it could also be 85 if the electrician was sloppy. 85 and 86 are just opposite ends of the same circuit inside the later relay.
Looking at the original relay in the wiring diagram, it looks to me that the brake needs to be applied in order to get the starter relay to work. There appears to be a transistor inside the relay, the base of which (terminal 15 on the relay) appears to be connected to the brake circuit in such a way as to supply a feed when either brake is activated. If terminal 15 does not become live (ie brake on) when you press the starter button the relay will not work and the starter will not crank. That is the way it appears to me.
As I say I have very little experience of /5s and cannot recall having worked on a /5 starter circuit. I am just going by the wiring diagram in a Haynes manual.
      Hope that helps. Good luck.
I'll have a look at your video when I get a chance.
      All the best, Guy

@@motophoenix5951 Got a rear flat 2okms onto highway. Fellow old school beemer stopped we changed rear tube and whimped it home. Changed tire out front RCMP fed police station on sidewalk. BSA broke down in exact same spot 20 years ago LOL! think it was a flat too.
It had mild pinging chirping anyways so will take trusty RT100 pig tomorrow on search LOL!
