Genre Snobbery, Literary “Merit” and Terry Pratchett | Night Watch to be a Penguin Modern Classic
Ten years after his death, Sir Terry Pratchett has been “accused of literature” as Night Watch, widely acclaimed to be his “best” Discworld novel, is selected for publication* by Penguin Modern Classics. As a lifelong Discworld fan, I feel a mixture of excitement and poignancy as I look back over Terry Pratchett’s long battle with genre snobbery and wonder what he would have made of it all. I also give my thoughts on Night Watch and add some of my own suggestions for the “best” of Discworld. Would love to hear yours!
*On 28th of April 2025 complete with academic notes and annotations! And, of course, footnotes! 😉

The scathing tv review I mentioned was apparently from the BBC Late Review Show in the 90s when Tom Paulin said Pratchett was “a complete amateur” and “He doesn’t even write in chapters!”. Hah! Tom Paulin! I remember the programme being aired and had an immediate horrified fascination with this obnoxious and self satisfied creature. I think it was the way in which he deliberately slouched down so as to rest his elbow on the arm of his chair and stroke his chin in imitation of the pose made famous by overly enthusiastic 19 year old pseudo intellectuals nursing half a lager and black all night while expounding second hand platitudes to anybody unfortunate enough to be in earshot. A traditional fixture in student bars across the land, they're almost as ubiquitous as the guy borrowing 10p's from multiple targets "for my bus fare home" only to be seen immediately afterwards with a fresh pint. As critics like Tom Paulin are viewed in authorial circles, students usually chalk such people down as an occupational hazard; best avoided but part of the scenery and really quite a laugh so long as they're happening to somebody else.

    • @spreadbookjoy
      @spreadbookjoy 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@acrodave9287 “obnoxious self-satisfied creature” really sums him up! I cannot bear anyone who thinks that book snobbery is acceptable - looking down on anything that people read for pleasure is intellectual gatekeeping at its worst. Imagine shaming people by criticising the books that they enjoy and being so scathing of a successful author like Terry Pratchett! Odious!

    I suspect it couldn't have happened in his lifetime, they wanted him safely dead and not (metaphorically) pulling any too-weird-for-them rabbits out of the hat after they'd put him in their line up before they did it. Thanks for this though, it was a lovely overview and the news had passed me by somehow. It also brought back great memories of Discworld, knowing someone who helped organise the convention when he was alive and I was a bookcrosser, calling one of my cats Luggage, Late Review and Tom Paulin, a man who was often so very, very wrong but gleefully, enthusiastically, exasperatingly so... I still can't grasp how quickly ten years has passed. Time to revisit the books for sure. 🦧

    • @spreadbookjoy
      @spreadbookjoy 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@alexsbooklife thank you - so glad you enjoyed the video. Luggage is an absolutely brilliant name for a cat! I never went to a Discworld convention and particularly regret not going while he was alive and attending them. You make a great point about Penguin not risking it until enough time has passed for any potential skeletons hiding in closets to emerge! As it has done with so many authors of late. They probably learned their lesson when they bowed down to pressure from Morrissey and published his book as a classic in its first print run! 😬 Enjoy revisiting the books!

    I took years to read the last two as well 😢 Night Watch is awesome! I am glad he finally got on the list (although he would have laughed up his sleeve about it) Going Postal, Small Gods, and Monstrous Regiment are all good picks… but Hogfather (one of my favorites) I think doesn’t stand alone… you need backstory for Susan to really enter into the story and understand more about the fabulous romp it takes you on.

      I am hoping I will read it this year, but it just feels so final! Tbh I agree with you on that point re Hogfather - I also feel the same way about Night Watch because Vimes's character development is probably one of the best trajectories of all the characters in the series and the relevance of lots of the plotlines and themes are so much more meaningful if you've read the others.

    Love discworld. I have read them all, it took me a while to bring myself to read the shepherd crown so I completely understand where you're coming from for it. Similarly as I've read more of them and gotten old the city watch books hold more appeal. The ones I would say should maybe also be considered for your list would be snuff (traumatizingly sad), and thud. Although I do love and agree with all the ones you've picked. I think the moist Von lipwig ones are wonderful.

    Your putting off reading the last Pratchett book because of the emotional energy required is so relatable. I have been reading Poirot books since 1978 and have yet to read Curtain, the last in the series. I don't think my poor heart can take it. I still need to finish Discworld, as well. For a long time it was my favourite and I revisited that sequence a lot in my twenties!
