Nature is healing. You would love quotes by John Muir
Stuff sacs are a must have if you like a compact pack. I would not be able to bring all my winter gear in my 22L pack without a couple compression stuff sacs
I have that same knife i use it a lot
Great idea if you're not sharing your sleeping bag with a 60 lbs pit bull. 😂😂😂
For those who dont know how big the condensation problem is. It is massive made something like this with my tarp praising my self for how clever i was. 4 hours in and i was shivering because my sleeping bag was wet. Be very careful how and when u use those
Hello from Utah. Good video! Thank you.
, , , how bout that , ,
Give it to one of us
I want to look into a tarp tent for my future tent. Just used a Big Agnes Blacktail 2 Hotel in winter camping. Not ideal but boy the vestibule was super nice. Also wasn’t backpacking. We had a camper van to which my father slept in. So we brought a ton of gear.
Reusing single-use plastic bottles in place of Nalgene bottles assures you trade ingestion of chemicals and microplastics for losing a few grams of weight. If duh isn’t the first word that comes to mind you might need a brain hack too.
So basically you lied
Sleeping on a bed of pine boughs seems preferable to a CCF pad. I would take a pool floatation pad with a built in pillow back in the day when I backpacked only in the summer and was broke af.
Gidday mate! what would you recommend for car camping/ small hikes, where weight is mot as much of an issue, but size is? Something that has good heat conduction. Cheers from NewZealand🙏🏻
You can get a replacement pair of scissors for the Victorinox credit card thing. Basically just a stand alone pair of those scissors
I couldn't go through all the comments, so I'm not sure if anyone else mentioned this. Try filling your inflatable pad, then lay on your side and let some air out until just before your hip touches the ground. It works for me.
I hear you but this didn’t help me find one
Awesome vid, exactly what i needed to learn, clove hitch is being added to my knot game. Helpful when theres no trees around and im to lazy to dig out and burry a post in the sand with rocks at the beach. Thank you so much it was easy to learn from you!
Now I know what I've been doing wrong with bowlines, thanks!
i went on my first backpacking adventure last September and i struggled in the dark like a fool for the better part of an hour trying my hardest to hang my bear bag. I did not do it nearly as pro as you just demoed. The bag was to heavy, I couldn't throw it over a branch good enough, and to boot i couldn't pull the cord at all. Just a huge fail. Thank you for this video and i am totally going to follow you for more tips as I really enjoyed my time in the woods and am excited to adventure again.
This video resulted in me hitting the Subscribe button. Good, well thought out content. It often use single wall shelters, and sometimes even free-standing tents depending on the trip, but my go-to shelter is a tarp. I don’t like condensation and find tarps allow for a lot more flexibility when looking for a place to sleep. I’m also much more of a hiker than a camper. Like you mention though, a lot depends on the trail. If I am camping where there are a lot of people I will probably use a single wall shelters. Thanks for the video.
dutch army goretex hooped bivi's are to me, the best ever. bit pricey but awesome
very good professional explanation
Fewer bugs are a good thing. Btw, the opposite of "many" is "few." These terms apply to something that is measured in individual units. "Less people" is especially hard to hear for someone who was taught the value of clear and concise communication habits. Btw, I agree with his assessment. More space for less weight (fewer ounces/grams) is a win! 😊
leatherman raptor shears are heavy but bulletproof and cut anything
whats that spoon you have?
What about the geese? 😢
Quilts are only good for summer. In which case could just bring a fleece blanket
I really don’t see the logic I’m not using the alcohol stove because of burn ban. You’ve just switched one fuel source for another. There is still flame.
Freezer bag cooking is so not healthy lol the boiling point of water is higher than the melting point of freezer bags.
I have a herniated disc and have never been able to sleep well on inflatable pads. I guess they just don’t provide enough support for me. An old-fashioned Thermarest Ridge Rest has given me my best sleep on the trail of my life!
Be a man and start from no sleeping pad. The thinnest pad feels like heaven compared to cowboy camping
I completely agree with you in regards to the sleeping bag. I'm a very active sleeper so I need a wide quilt as well. Even though I use it as a quilt 90% of the time it's really nice to have a zipper if things get really drafty and cold. The weight penalty is very little. Also I went back to a slightly sturdier pair of cheap rain pants, like what is in this video, with the idea that they will be subject to a lot more abuse from sitting on rocks and trees, bushwhacking, and so on. I think it's a little easier to get away with a super light rain jacket than pants but I'm clumsy.
Please tell me he carries a bigger knife in conjunction with that baby one. My fingernail file is bigger than that.
Great short, thank you. But isn't pouring hot water in PLASTIC like really bad for you!!? Heated plastic off gassing chemicals into that food!?
Alternative option. I have a rectangular tarp from when I used to hammock camp. I took cheap mosquito netting and sewed about 8” of mosquito netting around the whole bottom edge of my tarp. Then sewed mosquito netting into the doors of the my tarp (both ends in A frame setup) I added magnets for convenient closing at the ends. This setup allows me to comfortably sleep in black fly infested boreal forest way up north in the muskeg with no problems. There’s no floor and I weight down the edges of the mosquito netting with rocks or chunks of moss. When I’m in bug free climates or the shoulder season I am free to cowboy camp or set the tarp up high. Alternatively I can set it up tent style with a stick in really cold weather. I have a huge tarp it’s 13’ long, so I had to add a lot of netting. That combined with me going overboard with magnets and also netting up the triangles on the a frame ends added more weight than I planned. I used cheap heavy shitty netting from the sporting good store. Tarp weighed 0.9lbs with tie downs and rope prior to mods now weighs 1.6lbs with netting. If you made the decision to only setup the tarp tent/toe style you could eliminate the mosquito netting on the ends and save a lot of weight. Cutting down on magnets would also have saved me a ton of weight
Just don't leave those bags on your feet on the trail or bad things happen 🦶☠️
Or you can buy the mash potatoes with bacon already in it!🤔👍🏽😜
Hi! I came across your channel a few days ago and I just wanted to say that I love your videos! They have their own niche and the cinematography is amazing!! Nr 13 Bugs in summer :D
I think you'll find that all the pots are made of titanium and aluminium . be careful if it says made with 99% pure Titanium. because 99% titanium is what they're mixed with the aluminium
Please NEVER do this!!!!! You are eating micro plastic!!!!!!!!
Boiling water and ziplock plastic equals micro plastic permanently in your body!!! Hard pass!!!!
I'd maybe trust the reusable style dishwasher safe bags for this over the ziplocs. Either way you're boiling plastic, even the coating in your freeze dried meals are plastic coated
I want to try the msr carbon core and big sky tube stakes. I was impressed with the groundhogs but the shape is annoying for packing. The DAC J stakes look promising too, similar holding power as groundhogs but stack nicely
Great video.
No wonder why usa is the most obese country in the world.
On the MSR Groundhogs: I thruhiked the PCT with a Zpacks Duplex. I started off with Mini-Groundhogs for the mainlines and Zpacks carbon fiber stakes on the 4 corners. This worked well i the good soil of Illinois, but out west I occasionally had each type pull out. I upgraded to regular Groundhogs on the mainlines and minis on the corners and had no issues. Maybe pick up some minis and give them a try to save a little weight on the corners.
Agreed. I’ve done about 3500 miles with a Zpacks tent. I’ve started looking into tarps and have come to the conclusion that modern DCF tents are the better option for all of the reasons that you listed. Weight, ease, and protection are all on the tent’s side in most situations.
