    My bivi has a bathtub floor which is waterproof and very good top. My tarp is from REI and I’m never as warm as when I’m in my bivi. However, what made me change was the convenience of being in a tent. It the end my tent was equal to the weight of bivi and tarp.

    I hope you kept the original groundhogs because what matters most with stakes is how deep they go into the ground. Secondary is their shape. If you are really worried about weight then get the Ruta Locura 9 inch carbon fiber stakes. They are 7.5 grams each and hold amazing for their weight. They have metal tips so that you don’t break them when shoving them into the ground. And the cord hole is inside the carbon fiber so that the metal tips don’t separate when pulling them out. You will break one eventually during many trips I’m sure, since I broke one. But you can carry 1 extra since it’s just 7.5 grams. For the Solid Durston, I carry 4 full length groundhogs and then 7 Ruta Locura 9 inch stakes. This way i have 4 bomb proof groundhog stakes for the 4 corners, so that I’m sure I have a shelter up. And then I have 7 more, 2 I use for the doors, 2 for ridge line, 2 for the wide panels so that I get more livable space and for storm proofing, and 1 spare, which I normally use on the middle of the narrow side facing the wind. It reinforces the ridge line further too, but not %100 needed even in a storm, so it’s really a spare in case one breaks. Comes out to a total of 108.1 grams for stakes. Or 3.81 ounces.

    Lots of good info. I still like my mid. Four stakes and a trekking pole. Out of the rain in 2 minutes or so. I met a family of four with a big dynema mid on the AT a couple of years ago. Very high winds but they did Ok. I had a cheap North Face Stormbreak 3 for me and my two kids. Heavy but really kid proof. We each carried a part. One had the tent body, one the fly, one the poles. It’s too heavy but I only section hike. It’s been tough. I had a problem with the mid in snow. Need better pegs in soaked ground.

      Thanks for watching! I've always liked the concept of a mid, but I've found that I need to size up with a traditional mid here in the PNW since its so wet and I don't want to be bumping the walls. I've recently started using a Zpacks plex solo, which is not quite a mid, but similar concept with the single pole design. Sounds like you have a good system for breaking up the weight! All that matters is that you're having a good time. For what its worth, I'm a huge fan of the full sized groundhogs when holding power is a concern.

    We've all been guilty of "stupid stuff". I remember my first hike in scouts (many many years ago) and i swear my pack weighed more than me, i didnt have enough water for the first leg, and didnt use about 80% of what i carried. 🤣

    I love how different it is in different places. This is eye-opening hearing you talk about things like carrying less hydrated food and water because you are near water. Most of my backpacking is high desert Rocky Mountains. We're carrying the water, so whether or not the food is hydrated is irrelevant. Similarly you mentioned the layers.... Out here it's not uncommon for the temps to drop 30 degrees rapidly after sunset, so layers are life. Key takeaway for me: know your terrain, and pack accordingly. I see my normal rocky mountain pack would not be great in your area of the pacific northwest. Keep up the amazing videos!

      So glad you enjoyed the video, and thank you so much for watching! Yeah, it really is wild to think about how different the conditions and planning can be in different areas. I'm currently planning a trip with some desert stretches and it's all very new to me. That's a very good point!

    I'm a very active sleeper as well and also bought a quilt. I made a similar discovery and use the quilt for warmer times and prefer a sleeping bag for colder camps. Having said that I sleep reeaaaly cold (old guy, circulation problems, and plain spoiled) so most times I'll opt for the sleeping bag. If things get too warm open up the zipper and I have quilt 🙂

    Water is a huge problem for me, I have the propensity to get kidney stones, so I have to take a lot of water with me, and buy more within a 24-hour period, I do mostly bicycle camping these days as I am 73 and my knees are no longer enjoying long hikes with weight on my back. So I carry about 166 ounces of water with me! Because the last thing I want is a kidney stone someplace remote and can't get to a hospital, that would probably be a life-ending event if it went on for too long. So I drink a lot of water to keep my system flushed.

    • @timbschwartz
      @timbschwartz 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for sharing! I get you, to a certain degree. I'm on some arthritis meds that have the tendency to destroy one's organs if not properly hydrated, so I tend to drink quite a bit throughout the day.

    ...."PNW needs include a bug-net and a ground sheet, your tarp set up approaches the weight of a very very light tent'. I'm still in awe zpacks type setups can be sub 20z. i grew up in time when 4 pounds was light, and a 2.5 pound bivy/tarp was magical. The technological jump from the late 90s shocks me.

    • @timbschwartz
      @timbschwartz 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for the comment! I know, it really is wild how light they've become. I love using tarps, but at some point I had to come to grips with the fact that they're no longer a massive weight advantage. Still lots of benefits though, not the least of which is much less condensation to deal with.

    Nice. 👍 Add to foam mat, cheap rubber airbed! (Or even a plastic one, aka, li-lo or Lilo.) For years and years I kept using the same cheap rubber airbed, because, that's what all my friends used as well, and so, that's what we used. (And when eventually it couldn't keep air in anymore, I bought another one! Because!) Had many freezing nights on it, body heat just goes straight into the ground. Popular advice (also from my friends) was, put an emergency foil blanket on top of it if you're cold. Or, just get something decent. My first proper Thermarest mat was a total revelation! 😲👍❤

    Love your channel, just subscribed! The bear bag video alone sold me. For others*: You could have your mind made up about quilts, but if your quilt has loops on the side you can really cinch it down. You are then able to have a dream state wrestling match under there and the quilt won't budge. I felt the same way as you do before learning about those little widgets.

    in my experience the temperature ratings on sleeping bags are extremely conservative. At comfort I have to open the side up to air out the sweat. At limit it's a good nights sleep and at extreme it's cold enough that I need to think about additional assistance. Like drinking warm tea before bed, putting on a hat and/or socks and making sure to eat properly before going to sleep. But if I do those things even nights at "extreme" temperatures are pretty nice

    • @timbschwartz

      Thanks for reaching out, Ben! I really appreciate it. At this point, I'm satisfied with my spiritual beliefs and way of seeing the world. Like most, I search for a deeper sense of meaning in my day to day life, but for me that's part of the fun. No risk in bringing it up with me, so no worries there. We all have different ways of seeing the world and there's always something to learn from others, even if we ultimately choose different paths. Enjoy the rest of your week!

    For me (an super active sleeper as well) I feel like quilts are giving me superpowers compared to sleeping bags. Quilts allow me to roll around, side to side, so freely compared to sleeping bags, so I don't even wake up at nights anymore with quilt. I wouldn't say that quilts are not for active sleepers :D

    To me, the Clove Hitch is similar to a Constrictor knot ( people called it the "X" knot ) ! My favorite shelter is a Tarp Tent with flooring .

    • @timbschwartz
      @timbschwartz 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for watching! Great point - it is similar, although a clove hitch should be a bit easier to untie. I admit though I haven't really messed around with the constrictor knot. I've always wanted to try a configuration with a floor! I feel like I'd shred my thin DCF tarp doing it, so I'd need to get something a bit more durable.

    Yep, that pretty much sums it up for me. Agree with all of that. For me, the outdoors, when the weather's behaving, just makes my soul soar. Thanks for uploading, Tim. 🏔👍

    I couldn't agree more with you Tim. Despite an ocean and a continent between us, you give me the feeling we have a lot in common. Nature and The Outdoors are my personal 'religion'. I've been following all your videos for about one year and took a lot of your technical advice, eg: going 'tarp', packing lighter, getting rid of some heavy and unnecessary stuff, on my last mini through-hike in easter France. Actually, this and maybe a couple more channels, are my only 'social media' activities. Thanks for sharing with us. Keep the vibe alive, and all the best for your health! 🙌

      Thank you for checking out the video, and for all of your kind words! Im honored that I'm one of the few folks that you follow! I'm actually not much of a social media user either, believe it or not haha, and I also have a very small number of channels that I watch, so that really means a lot. Have a great week!

    I traded booze for adventure over 2 years ago. I've done things (and have future plans to do things) I never thought I would. The more that I'm outdoors the more I feel connected to the world.

    Man every single point made strongly resonates with me! I’m pretty sure using the word “saving” when describing what hiking and backpacking in the outdoors does for me, is the most accurate I can think of. So very glad you share these thoughts. Lets us know there are others who feel this passionately about nature. This made my day.
