  • This week I bring you along on a backpacking trip in Western Washington - I hike in , set up camp in the dark because I'm bad at time management, talk gear, cook a big breakfast because I was too lazy to make dinner, and gaze longingly at some sweet mountains. Enjoy!

I started using an Apex overbag on my quilt and it has greatly improved moisture management. It also has the added benefit of extending the temperature range. I think Alpha has the win for compression and long-term over Apex, but I'm not disappointed at all.

Tim, I just started watching your videos yesterday. This video was so good, enjoyed every minute. Would a stand alone synthetic quilt also solve your condensation issue? It’s definitely heavier and bulkier than down but maybe not more so than down plus an over bag. I’ve considered moving away from a down quilt for awhile, just haven’t been willing to buy ANOTHER quilt.

Thanks for the kind words Tyler!
Yes, it could solve the issue, but having run the numbers it's still lighter go go with an overquilt of some kind, especially if I choose alphadirect. Those tend to be around 10oz, plus it means I can take a lighter bag.
Yeah its hard to justify it once you start accumulating things - I'll probably just put up with the slight dampness until the time comes that I need a solution for a longer trip.

When was this shot? I've been going to the olympic peninsula, but even there recently, it's below freezing. Sucked it up, but Cascades I had to bail. It's too cold for my 3 season gear. 😂 I had fun anyway. I find headphones and sleep meds useful for falling asleep, but soloing it can be tough overcoming anxiety...

Hi! I shot this on November 8th, so still pretty early in the season. I got a little bit of snow that evening but it didn't stick - probably high 20s.
      Thank you for the comment!

How do u find cleaning your pot after eating from it?? I'm always thinking about going that way instead of freezer bag cooking..

Hey! I don't find it to be an issue outside of when it's absurdly cold out. Skurka has a good method for getting it done - check out this video, pot cleaning is toward the end: th-cam.com/video/XQp81n8uzzE/w-d-xo.html

Your issue with the condensation could be due to your being dressed too heavily inside the bag given the rather mild nightly low, rather than letting your body warm the bag, creating a comfortable micro-climate inside.
You may have created more moisture than you would have, had you had just slept in a 3-season base layer, sleeping socks, and hat. Yeah, I’m thinking even your thermal base was too much, given the rating on that bag.
I also think the single-wall tent didn’t help and if you feel you have to add a vapor barrier or an Alpha Direct overbag at those temps, then you’re negating the weight advantage the shelter is providing. Might as well go back to a double-wall shelter.
Maybe give a hammock a shot. You could use your sleeping pad as insulation underneath you down to 32 F no problem. And a rectangular 8x10 tarp is plenty overhead, so if you already have a lightweight tarp you really just need a hammock and suspension.
Check out the Hummingbird 1+. I’m not a big fan of Whoopie slings and just go with a 25-foot section of 2”-wide Venom webbing from ripstop by the roll, cut in half. I use this for tree huggers, and tie a slip loop in it that I run my continuous loop through and secure with a stick.
I just got back from a trip where every night was in the 30s and I camped near water. 95%+ humidity. Zero condensation issues, due to being off the ground, and not over dressing.
