    It's a bit of a pity not to have any Molière piece, any Victor Hugo, Albert Camus, Marguerite Yourcenar and Jean D'Ormesson book. Hugo's novels Les Misérable and Ninety-Three are incredible, La Légende des siècles (The Legend of the Ages) is one of the most wonderful pieces of poetry in history but also one of the closest thing to the Iliad and the Odyssey since the mythics history of the Francs Kings during the early Medieval Era. The Plague (La Peste) by Camus is a wonderful novel about how to react to absurd horor and a real masterpiece. Another masterpiece of Camus is L'Etranger (translated as The Stranger and as The Outsider), it's one of the most philosophical novel ever and one of the greatest books about Absurdism and the absurdity of live alongside The Myth of Sisyph and Caligula, one of the greatest theather pieces of the 20th Century. Memoirs of Hadrien and The Abyss by Marguerite Yourcenar are really great books, maybe 2 of the 10 or 20 best novels of the 20th Century. Cassimir mène la Grande Vie, Dieu, sa vie, son oeuvre (God, his life, his work) or Je Dirais malgré tout que cette vie fut belle are great books by Jean D'ormesson.

      @@leokaizzer4744 thank you for including them in the comments! I thought about including some Hugo or Camus, but they are talked about so often on BookTube that I decided to go off the beaten path and give space to authors English speakers might not have heard of before, authors of the larger French speaking world, and contemporary authors some room to shine. Personally, I worried over whether to include Maupassant in this video, but it was already getting so long!

I typically feel that Japanese Lit may not be as well translated as some other languages and kept having that feeling during some of the interactions. Thanks for doing the tag and thanks for the very kind words. Stendhal is definitely haunting you with The Red and the Black! I can relate to your "what if I hate it?" fear. I have that feeling with Frances Burney, 18th century British Lit (my major) renowned female writer that I've never read.

    Hi Tristan. Thank you for the tag. I will be doing this one soon. I enjoyed hearing your answers to the prompts. I am very impressed that you are considering reading Les Miserables and The Red and The Black in French. (I do understand that your field is French literature, but still, very impressive....) I have read The Red and The Black in English--but that was a lifetime ago in graduate school. I just read Les Miserables for the first time ever last month in a group here on BookTube. It was a magnificent experience. Do you know about Classics and Company? You might like to participate in a group read. We read Middlemarch together and then Les Mis. I had read Middlemarch several times before, but it was still fun to read it again with a group, and reading Les Miserables with a group was magnificent. Forty plus years ago, I read Spanish literature in Spanish, and I can remember being very intimidated by the prospect of reading Cien Anos de Soledad by Gabriel Garcia Marquez in Spanish, so I totally understand what you are talking about with Les Mis and Red and Black. Anyway, thank you for the tag. I will get to this soon.

      I saw that you've talked about Les Mis a few times now and it's giving me a bit of the kick in the pants that I needed to move it up on my list. Stendhal might need to wait a bit more. I'll check out Classics and Company!

      @@Tristan-L-Space-Books reading Les Mis was an incredible experience. I’m one of the few people who has never seen the movies or musicals, so I really didn’t know the story. I haven’t had an all-consuming reading experience like that since I was very young. It was wonderful. There was a Discord discussion which I didn’t really follow closely, but we also had a small group talking about the book on Voxer, and that discussion was exceptional. Are you a French teacher?

    Thanks for the tag; it's always great to find new channels. I may be about (7 ? weeks) behind on tags, but I'm catching up. I might sneak yours in early, however, because I do have a library week coming up!

    Blue Lard sounds trippy! I wonder if you need to have read some Russian literature in order to get the context?

      I guess we'll find out! I've never read any Russian literature. Much, I'm sure, to my detriment.

    I'd be really interested to know if the meanings change when books are translated. I read The She Was Gone and didn't really fancy it, but perhaps the French version will convey a different tone. Have you ever read a French and English version of a book back-to-back or in tandem?

    • @Tristan-L-Space-Books
      @Tristan-L-Space-Books 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I read Nos Étoiles contraires (A Fault in Our Stars) by John Green and I found that French lended itself well to the dry, cynical humor of Hazel and overall tone of the book. Additionally, for my thesis, I read Thérèse Desqueyroux by François Mauriac in both English and French. The striking difference between the two versions is that the English translation completely erases the queer subtext (it's been 70 years since it was translated, so yeah).

      @Tristan-L-Space-Books this means you will need to dedicate your scholarly life to an updated English translation and put the queers back in! 🏳️‍🌈
