  • Come peruse the four bookshelves I have in my apartment here in Boston. I want to read exclusively my Book of the Month books next month, maybe help me figure out which ones I should read?

Lots of material in this video! 🙂 It's cool that you are reading things from the AIDS crisis era. I lived through the time, and have some memoirs that I have had for years, but just now getting around to reading because at the time when they came out it was too heartbreaking to deal with. I had the same experience with BOMT...the first time I was in it (in the '80's) you had to mail a card back if you did NOT want the selection...hence my shelves are full of things I got because I didn't get the card back. Not bad stuff, but wouldn't have been my pick. I stayed in the club tho, because during those times, it was one of the only "safe" places I could get gay books. I was in BOMC about 3 years ago (gift subscription from a friend) and just didn't love the choices. (that's on me, not on them...I hate to seem like I am bashing them!) Hope you are enjoying the booktube experience thus far...best to you & Kyle 😊

I don't know if you've ever heard about this, but the play Angels in America by Tony Kushner (1991) was a great sensation at the time of the AIDS crisis. It was in two parts, set in 1985 and 1986. It won the Pulitzer prize for Drama and a Tony Award for Best Play.
In 2003 it was made into a miniseries with several "name" actors like Meryl Streep and Emma Thompson. But for me the great performances were by Al Pacino and Jeffrey Wright. It was directed by Mike Nichols. It's still readily available on DVD; I got my copy on Amazon.

I've seen the first few episodes of Angels and it's very good. I'm also quite a fan of Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin.
