  • It's that time of the month! I'm reading quite diversely, as I realized, with lots of different subject matter and genres being represented. Not a doubt exists in my mind that it's going to be a great month of reading. Which ones are you most excited for?

I have a feeling that The Tainted Cup is going to be right up both of our allies.

I'd be really interested to know if the meanings change when books are translated. I read The She Was Gone and didn't really fancy it, but perhaps the French version will convey a different tone. Have you ever read a French and English version of a book back-to-back or in tandem?

I read Nos Étoiles contraires (A Fault in Our Stars) by John Green and I found that French lended itself well to the dry, cynical humor of Hazel and overall tone of the book.
Additionally, for my thesis, I read Thérèse Desqueyroux by François Mauriac in both English and French. The striking difference between the two versions is that the English translation completely erases the queer subtext (it's been 70 years since it was translated, so yeah).

@Tristan-L-Space-Books this means you will need to dedicate your scholarly life to an updated English translation and put the queers back in! 🏳️‍🌈
