    The Comet was NOT armed with the 17 Pounder. The 77mm gun was first called the 75mm High Velocity and it was based on the 3 inch 20 cwt Anti-Aircraft Gun fitted with a new gun breach. It fired a 76.2 mm (17 Pdr) shell, but the shell case was shorter with larger diameter making it easier to load in a small turret. To avoid confusion with existing weapons it was named the 77mm, performance was slightly less, penetrating 110mm of RHA armour sloped at 30 degrees at 1,000 meters, compared to 130mm for the 17Pdr at same angle and distance.

    There is a story about a Cromwell tank commander who noticed that his tank was always the first to arrive anywhere, and when he was called to ask about taking on an 88mm gun, it turned out that it was an 20mm anti aircraft gun. He reversed quickly and once around the corner, he looked and saw that the bullets which should have bounced off, had instead stuck into the armor. When he saw this he realized that he had accidentally been given a mild steel pilot model. He considered giving it back but realized that because it could move so fast and get out of trouble quickly, he decided to keep it. It proved useful just days later when the Cromwell company was ambushed from the left flank. The only way they could get out of it was to try to jump a canal to the right flank. It worked, because the Cromwells were able to disengage the transmission as soon as they landed and before they stopped, they immediately engaged the transmission and sped way. Of all the Cromwells, none were lost.

    The biggest flaw in the Comet was that it did not have sloped armor. This problem was rectified in the next British tank, the Challenger. It was basically a Comet with sloped armor

    Just a quick point on the power of the KT main gun is not just the extra barrel length but is from the use of a much larger and different shaped cartridge case. The larger amount of gun powder in the KT as compared to the T1 is evident when seen side by side. The same is for the smaller case used on the Comet as to the Firefly gun.

    I served on the M60A1 in the mid-70s, it got 1mpg onroad and about 3gal per mile in the German mud. Weak spots were the design of the turret ring which later had an overlapping armor design, ammunition in the left rear of the turret along with the location of the Hydraulic system. Israel later removed the turret ammunition, and the TC cupola and repositioned the hydraulic system along with the chin armor addition to the turret ring. front slope LOS was 250mm. Even in 1975 we were at a point where RHA was becoming obsolete with the available ammunition, simply put, you couldn't carry enough armor to stop ATGMs and HEAT rounds along with the later sabot rounds.

    Interesting points. The way I look at the jagdpanzer/stug/panzer IV discussion is first establishing context. I never entertain any “which is best” discussions when it comes to ww2 equipment (I’m glad nobody did here) since there’s no such thing anyway. I feel it comes down to context in terms of what the vehicle is meant to do. The poor performance of jagdpanzers and stugs usually is attributed to them being used in roles they’re never meant for. They’re not tanks, and that may be obvious to everyone here but they far too often were used in that role when panzer units were short of replacements.

    I don't think the A34 comet came little too late, it still managed to see some action at least, similiar to the americans M26 Pershing tank, i remember watching another youtube video where some comet tanks actually went up against tigers n panthers, albeit not very many of them obviously, but it showed in those videos and accounts from tank commanders who operated the comet tanks that the comet could take on the big cats and come out on top. But yes, it probably did come too late as the war had been won already but at least it got to see active, i think it was the 11th Armoured DIvision that was fully equipped with them by the end of the war.

    Hitler is often mocked in modern documentaries for his preoccupation with monster tanks. However, it created a fad among the allies to produce answers to them. Hitler, being aware of this possibility, issued the decree that every year, the fire power and protection of German tank design must double. Unlike Germany, the allies were capable of mass production of their monster tanks. Thankfully, seeing how quickly the Germans were losing the war and how much badly needed resources these monsters were consuming would quicken the end of the war. So the allies cancelled their monster tanks, seeing no real use for them. Using the nomenclature of the day, the T-28 was an assault gun, and the British Tortoise was a tank destroyer or tank hunter. While the Maus, regardless of its ridiculous weight, was a tank.

  • @jamesevans886
    @jamesevans886 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The T-44 actually did see combat in 1945. The Guard divisions that were using the T-44 had to swop over to T34/85s. Stalin did not want the West to have any captured examples to examine. The initial run of T-44s, unlike other Russian tanks, operated poorly and unreliable in the sub-zero temperatures. This required a completely new redesign of the engine bay to fix. Its road wheel and suspension configuration was carried over to the T-55. There were unconfirmed whispers about the existence of the T-44, but it came as a complete surprise to NATO in the late 60s when the Soviet Union announced its official retirement. There were so few of the T-44 made by comparison to other Soviet designs it could be considered a limited production collector's edition. Another Soviet design to look at is the T-43. Its production was halted very early as after trails, it was considered to be no real improvement over the T-34/85. The video was again very well presented.

      I do believe the T-44 saw action, in a modernised form, on the China-Mongolia boarder in the Sino-Soviet fighting.

    • @jamesevans886
      @jamesevans886 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @spamuraigranatabru1149 Thanks for your reply. Quite possibly, as its operational history is very sketchy in the West at best. It went through at least one modernisation program as there is a reference to a T-44M. There were only around 1,400 T-44 made. By comparison, there were roughly 125,000 T-54 tanks produced. This number varies depending on different reports. The T-54 was a much better, so I don't think the Soviets had any real post-war plans for the T-44. The Soviets do keep re-purposing old designs. For example, they still had quite a few T34/76 tanks still in use at the end of WW2. By this time, they were used in the recon, light tank role replacing the T-70 light tank in front line units. So I do see the T-44 quickly jointing the T-10 in the second echelon units post-war and ending up wherever its parent formation is sent.

      @@jamesevans886 The T-10 series stayed entirely at the western flank, it and the T-44 recieved night fighting and stabilisation equipment and was not too rare a sight till the later introduction of the T-64B into the Guard units at the mid 70s and subisquiently put into storage/scrapped. On the Russian steps, the Nashhorn was a true monster. It could sit back at long range, picking off anything it liked. German ammunition was smokeless, which would make it very difficult to spot out around 1000m. In rolling terrain, other AFVs could get in much closer. Due to its size and lack of armour meant the crew had to be on their toes to avoid being hit. In more closed terrain, it really was a wreck waiting to happen. By 1944, high explosive and armour piecing rounds were in good supply, but every other type of round, including smoke, was almost impossible to obtain. As a mid war stop gap design, I believe it did a stirling job.

    L70 is a whole different ball game over the L48. Much higher velocity gun that could easily whack an IS2. I understand wanting the L70 but on the Panzer 4 chassis but it made the vehicle very front end heavy and not easy to manuever. Hence the first two roadwheels being steel. Get one into ambush position and its very lethal. Im sure your also aware the first ones only had the L48 due to a shortage of L70's. An L70 could shoot a round clean through a Sherman. It had more penetration than the 88 on a Tiger 1.

  • @jamesevans886
    @jamesevans886 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I've always looked on the Jagdpanzer series as the next evolution generation of the STuG III/IV series in the tank destroyer role. The main waste of resources was using Panzer IV Gs to make them as these were still viable tanks against the medium and light tanks of the Allies. The Germans still had a need for assault guns, and this could have been left to the STuGs or even the Hetzers, but equipped with the short 75mm gun, as it was more effective against infantry. However, by this stage of supply line's were stretched to breaking point, and the production of new vehicles was chaotic at best. So, out of desperation, many vehicles were pressed into roles they were ill-suited for.

      yeah i mean to each their own, i can understand you not liking it in War Thunder, but in world of tanks its kinda overpowered. it has like a DPS of 3 thousands, better than some tier 10 tanks which is nuts. only real downside is its hp count
