    Morning !
The strategic goal for Market Garden was very different. But that's for another time. 😁
Very good point on "human resources" (I hate that term) management, especially when you consider that the personnel coming from Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe wasn't bottom tier from a medical and fitness standpoint. They would have done better filling up the ranks of existing formations.
As for numbers: a standard German infantry division was roughly 15.000 men. a Volksgrenadier division was only 10.000.
Skorzeny was only a side note. The real astonishing fact was that the Germans could keep the offensive a secret AND/OR that Allied intelligence totally failed. AGAIN. Well, they were right about the fuel situation.
Peiper was found NOT GUILTY by Allied war trials. As a matter of facts, the murder of POWs happened on both sides (NOT including the Eastern front). 12th XX in Normandy is quite infamous, but the Canadians eventually paid back eye for eye. Which is understandable but still a crime. The Malmedy Massacre was soon followed by the murder of some 50 German POWs. Bad things happen at war and no side comes out clean.
There are countless accounts for both sides acting in a very "kind" human way, if this is possible in a war, which after all is also a human habit, but these tend to be forgotten in favour of the bad things. Field hospitals on both sides tried their best to save lifes no matter which "uniform" came in.
101st AB division enforced with a TD battalion (M-10) and a 105mm arty battalion was very able to see 26th Volksgrenadier off on its own. They were supported by a working air supply. "Patton to the rescue" is a piece of PR work. Also, by that point the German offensive had bogged down and run out of fuel already. Patton came for the mop-up after all was said and done.
The British did quite a number in stopping the Germans. VII (???) Corps came under Monty's command, IIRC, and British troops sealed off every northern route to Antwerp.
