Why GAMEDEV YouTube is DYING (And What We Can Do About It)

I just thought about making this video to express my thoughts on the current situation. Previous devs like Dani had been able to bridge the gap between devs and gamers which helped them develop their game but also kept the gamedev-youtube community alive. Now a days, I feel like the community has become much more lonely and is mainly just devs. This also sucks as this niche on TH-cam was previo...

    Technical Videos are definitely more welcome… people will flock to whatever ADHD short content they can find, but truly educational content is far more valuable unless your entire goal is to make money/fame… at which point there’s not greater “gamedev TH-cam” community, just another lump of content creators in the ocean competing for attention

    Is "GameDev TH-cam" game dev tutorials, or devlogs? Or both? I actually plan to vlog the progress of my game. I've figured out that making a successful (read selling) game is very difficult, because we have games coming out our ears. Free to play (freemium?), free games, classic AAA games, a lot of indie games, steam, GoG, etc, and even many game platforms (read epic or GoG or steam) often give away free games. I have so many games I couldn't ever hope to play them all. So I figured, if I ever wanted to make a living, I might as well become a vlogger, since this almost seems to be where the real money and/or success is. I've been studying this a little bit, the "entertainment" gamedev'ers vs just someone documenting their game development. The entertainment ones don't really seemed to be concerned with games for themselves, but just as a vehicle for their 'videotubing'.

    • @theunityguy_yt
      @theunityguy_yt 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I was looking more at devlogs and its not to say that you can't succeed in the industry, but simply the fact that I feel a lot of people could be finding more success based on factors I've outlined. The most successful form of devlogs is game creation meant purely for content rather than actually developing and releasing a successful game.

      @@theunityguy_yt - I want to see if there's a happy medium in there somewhere, my game is an adventure game so you don't need to focus too hard on technical details. I also don't want to give mtv-style editing with tons of memes and dad-jokes either. So I'm going to have to figure this out. I've got some time though because it takes a while to actually make progress on your game, which is what I need if I'm going to show progress of my game. That being said my goal is to produce content BY making my game, if that makes sense? :-)

      @@Uhfgood totally makes sense, and I'm trying to do the same with my own game! And by the way, best of luck with your videos. It's really just a matter of trial and error to find what works :D

    Your story took me back to mine because they are very similar, it was like I was seeing it in a mirror especially with the part of wanting to make money and all that but I gave up because not having a good PC I couldn't use Unity and I met godot and in pandia there were no good godot tutorials like now and I wasted a lot of time. I'm really amazed at how many people have shared the same stories and experiences as me! Not having a good pc is really relatable actually, as I develop games on a mid-specked laptop and really weak integrated graphics (which is terrible for 3d games). Anyways, I really hope that your able to chase your passion of gamedev and you hopefully find some success in the industry. Indie games are the only way new things happen in gaming. Large developers aren't willing to take risk, so they keep making the same games over and over.

  • @burgerbait
    @burgerbait 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I feel like most indie games that get popular are the ones some youtubers play. They blow up in popularity for a month or so and then no one is playing it anymore. It really shows how powerful marketing can be but it makes me question if the game was even good if it gets dropped so fast. You also have to sift through a LOT of crap to find anything half decent. As you mentioned, 95% of games on steam are indie games. That's a lot of games. I think a big contributor to the rise of indie games is the fall of AAA games. I don't remember the last time I looked forward to a AAA release and wasn't hugely disappointed when it released.

  • @piotrek7633
    @piotrek7633 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    It's hard already, i dont think that you should promote indie games if you want to atleast have a chance of living off of it :) This could be compared to the programming boom during covid. "Make a quick course and have a 130k$ a year job doing front end!", do this course do that. multiple jobs. And look at right now, kinda harsh because they spammed so much juniors, many people are losing jobs day by day. Do you want the same to happen to game dev? People spamming trash games and hiding the gems, or people putting the curve so high that you have to do AAA quality as an indie for people to get interested? The more in the dirt this gig is the better for truly passionate people. You should focus on bringing more people into gaming than game deving, and promoting buying games instead of pirating

    Personally, I would say macromedia flash, newgrounds, and other web-game services, were far more important for indie games and it's culture than the release of unity. I also think Steam should be highlighted too, were it not for their marketplace, the majority of big indie hits would have never caught on - being on steam can make or break an indie game.

    This all looks very cool and I've watched a few of you're videos and everything is moving along nicely. But... Well a game loop is just that a game loop start game play game end game repeat. There was no game loop in this video it was just a level overhaul with a couple mechanics reimplemented, I'm itching to see the actual game loop, the fps, the gun mechanics, missions, monsters or w.e we are shooting at etc... If you are just having fun playing with level design that's great keep at it, but if you are hoping to maybe market a successful game I would get the game loop made get the game feel down packed and make sure its fun to play before spending months polishing a level. I only say this cause when I started game dev I did that same thing I couldn't even count the amount of times I spent polishing levels and adding features just to get to the actual game and realize wow this is boring and scrap the project and start a new one. Anyways that's my 2 cents take it with a grain of salt. Keep up the great videos.

    Love the fact that we are not that different. Not all in the good way as I’m like as Introverted as you can be but also the fact that I started learning programming during Coronavirus, not through the Terminal but through Python but still. And then I thought HTML was really cool in 2022. After some time I also found that one Brackeys tutorial and got a little bit into Unity but this is where we differ. I thought Unity was to hard and learned Pygame and later OpenGL in Java but I got bored off all the annoying boilerplate code needed and then didn’t continue with Unity but with Unreal Engine for no reason at all. Now it’s 2024, I’m 14 and still didn’t really learn too much as I just can’t seem to stick to one project at a time and don’t want to watch tutorials as I just watched way to many tutorials telling me tutorials are bad even though I know I should probably start watching some tutorials and also one big problem of mine is my perfectionism. I always need everything to be perfect and for some reason if I see numbers in the Inspector there is no way I’ll leave 1.590876 as that but I’ll make it 1.6 but even if it’s 1.55 it has to be 1.6. And probably the biggest problem at the start was my lacking knowledge of English as I’m from Germany and now I’d say I speak pretty good but as I’m introverted as hell I never really got to test it out. So yeah the start isn’t that different just that I started at a different age being 10 when I first learned Python.
