Making video games for 3 Years | A Little Story

  • Yep, it's been 3 years. Even though, I've taken like 4-5 month breaks in between. Here's a little recap. Most of the footage is low quality because it's old videos and I don't have those projects anymore so sorry about that.
    If you're looking for a more recent video, you can check out the ones right before this on level design! A discord server is also in the works!

    Something important in development is always that copying tutorials won’t help you at all, since I am a helper for newer developers I always see that they just copy off tutorials from youtube and never learn anything nor read errors, it always ends up me telling exactly what the error says and having to spoon feed them.
    But yeah, about the video is was relatively good, it’s 4am rn tho
    Just a little thing, in the parts where you don’t talk and have music, you can make it louder there :p

      @theunityguy_yt  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      yep, I had to learn the hard way. A year and a half in, I realized i couldn't do anything without tutorials and I had to kind of force myself to slowly learn without them. Doing that was totally worth it because I can do so many things by myself now and I feel like the biggest limiting factor is my own imagination. Also, when I don't know something, instead of going to youtube, I now immediately search my question up and google and find a bunch of blogs talking about similar issues which is a much better way to do things. Thanks for the comment tho!

      Hey, is there actually a difference between copying tutorials and using tutorial code/approach as a reference of how you can make something?
      Or should we just learn by ourself thinking of how to approach things from 0? i feel like thats kinda re-inventing the wheel but whats your take on it Wayabot.

    • @theunityguy_yt
      @theunityguy_yt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lokosstratos7192 I'm not wayabot, but I think the later is totally fine. I mean without using reference code or concepts, It's very difficult to "reinvent the wheel". The problem is, that a lot of beginners don't approach it in that manner and don't have the skills to simply use tutorials as a reference.

      you can still learn by just changing minor things, for example in Hammer (Source´s World editor) watching a tutorial and doing what is shown, but on a different map can teach the basics quite well.

    • @theunityguy_yt
      @theunityguy_yt  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rendric8125 true. The biggest problem though is when new gamedevelopers become too dependent on tutorials. Like even after I was comfortable with the engine, I kept following tutorials and learnt nothing for a long time.

    Thanks for making this video, I have not been able to get my head around the programming part of unity which is a shame because I can model qiute well and know the engine itself becuase I make mods. Good luck with your game and happy development 🎉

    • @theunityguy_yt
      @theunityguy_yt  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No problem. For like a year and a half, I also hated the programming aspect and I couldn't do anything without a tutorial. I also didn't know enough to follow once tutorial series and then mess with the code on my own so that it worked with another series.
      To be totally honest, the best approach to deal with this is to force your self to learn without tutorials. Like think of what you want to make and then try to figure out where to start. Then, for every question you get, search it up on google and click on any blogs or "unity help" websites that show up. Trust me, you will have a lot of these questions. And over time you'll realize that you no longer need to ask that many questions and you'll become really independent.
      It takes time tho but good luck with your mod development :D

    Hey man nice vid, I have one question, how do under 18 devs publish their games because Unity says must be 18 plus to submit user content to Unity. Does this mean the services provided by unity or even a third party application such as steam etc or even ur own website please help me amazing video btw.

    • @theunityguy_yt
      @theunityguy_yt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually a really interesting question that I've never really considered. I'll probably be over 18 by the time the game is released, but I don't see a great option of under 18 devs. You need to be able to sign contracts which happens to be 18 years old in most places. I don't even know if parents/guardians can even help with that. It's a great question that I'll definitely look into. Thanks for bringing it up! Happy you enjoyed the vid :D

    Do i honestly do i need to learn to code? Like UE4 and 5 have blueprint system that is all the code but bobbed together. I know its probably better to learn it at some point but i just wanna make games now LOL

    • @theunityguy_yt
      @theunityguy_yt  ปีที่แล้ว

      For me, I kinda had to learn because unity's visual coding system isn't as well developed as unreal's. If you are using UE5 to develop games, i'd honestly suggest the blueprint system over C++. So yea, in your case you probably don't even need to worry about coding :D

    • @Fasyle
      @Fasyle ปีที่แล้ว

      I struggled so hard with UE5 Blueprints and just couldn't get it down. I know Python at an intermediate level and was able to pick up C# in Unity so much more easily. That won't be for everyone, but it was for me. Following a few tutorials helped get a feel for the engine but don't stay there long. Pay special attention to WHY they do stuff, not WHAT they are doing. Every time something doesn't make sense, go look it up in the docs. Don't follow blindly. Most people making tutorials are note following best practices or even good practices. Oh, speaking of docs, I had a really hard time using UE5 docs, I think Unity's docs are better.
