    Hello from 🇺🇸… I purchased this book a few months ago from Amazon for $20.00 + tax. I have knitted the Baffin Jumper and planning to knit the Artica Jumper next. It’s a wonderful book and I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves to knit Nordic style sweaters. And, even if you don’t knit, the pictures are beautiful and can be appreciated! ❤️

    Also, the cost of high-ticket items of the kind my mom is used to buying is staggering. She told me she much admired a coat, but could not justify the €1,000+ price tag. Likewise she was lusting after a nice shawl but it was €300, which would but a hell of a lot of nice yarn!

  • @annafdd
    @annafdd 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I hesitate to say this but I spent a lifetime hearing my mother complain that she had no choice but staying married to my father because she did not have an independent income, and while it dawned on me far too late that my mom did not actually want to leave my dad, I think the financial situation made life more bitter for her (and me) than it needed to be. So I have to say, I am a little creeped out by hearing that you are “allowed” to buy yarn. Presumably the choice to have a child and for you to stay at home to look after them was taken as a couple. You accepted a reduction in direct income because you provided a baby that I assume you both wanted, and the labour that goes with caring for said child. If the idea is that the money your husband earns is his and he graciously gifts it to you, instead of money the family earns for the three of you, to lead the kind of lifestyle one income lets you afford, then that is a very big red flag. Myself, I never remember the cost of yarn either: most of the cost of yarn for me is the incredible amount of space it takes in my small flat. The one time I stepped back from purchasing some yarn is when the pattern (and I have knitted three, no maybe four patterns that called for it) involved Spincycle Yarns. They are beautiful and the cost is probably due to the process of creating them, but… every time I consider it I look at the total and go, heck no.

      Hello, thanks for your thoughts. When this video was published (over 1 year ago), it was immediately brought to my attention that the word "allowed" was a poor word choice and I completely agreed with those comments. If you have a chance to read the rest of the comments, I believe this should become evident. However, I wanted to reinforce that message and reiterate that it was never my intention to be complaining about my financial situation or implying that my husband controls all the finances (and he is not controlling at all, to be clear) and that I have no spending choices. I also want to make it clear that I know I play a significant role in my family and I am happy to say that I'm in a healthy, supportive relationship where I am free to make my own choices. Thank you for your time and watching my video; I'm glad it got you thinking!

    If you do decide to felt anything again, I found I had better results and control by just soaking in the kitchen sink then rolling and rubbing by hand. If you roll and rub you can control the width and length so much better. But that being said, your slippers look great.

    The dress looks incredible! Such an amazing piece, and it fits you so well! And 26 sizes with the guidance how to blend between them, the designer and the editor (if there's any) really had a lot of work to do. Sometimes I wish I wouldn't be such a slow knitter, if I'd try to make it, I'd finish in 10 years 😂 It's beautiful. And the jumper (cardigan? the piece you're making for over it) will look great, I'm sure. Have fun at the party! ❤

    Hi Melissa - Beautiful cardigan. I am wondering how you used a sport weight yarn held single when the instructions call for sportweight PLUS laceweight to reach DK weight -- according to Ravelry. I see on your Ravelry page that you used needles U.S. size 6 and 4 -- was that 6 for the bodya nd 4 for ribbing? Meanwhile, the pattern on the Moreca site calls for needles in four sizes! And they are 2 1/2, 4, 6 AND 8. I'm so confused! Why would there be smaller needles recommended when the yarn being recommended would be larger than yours (two held together). Can you help me understand?! Thanks.

    • @stringthingsbymel
      @stringthingsbymel 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi, thank you. I'll do my best to explain what's going on: 1) I achieved gauge with a single strand; however, this results in a fabric that behaves differently from the pattern sample. Compared to my first Paul Cardigan (green) where I held 2 strands of yarn together, my grey one has more drape. This was something I liked based on my swatch, hence, my decision to move forward and knit with a single strand of Drops baby merino. "Suggested yarns" are exactly that - suggestions. I frequently substitute yarns and always swatch to determine if I like how the fabric feels. 2) I don’t have all the needles listed on my Ravelry project page, but I did use all 4 needle sizes as instructed in the pattern. In the case of the Paul Cardigan, there are different needles used throughout to achieve a particular structure/look. 5 mm = a specific step in the neckline 4 mm = body 3.5 mm = 1x1 ribbing 3 mm = 2x2 ribbing on the neckline and double knitting Hope that helps! I'm happy to answer any further questions.

      @@stringthingsbymel Thank you so so much for taking the time to respond.!And, yes, what you've said makes lots of sense. I guess I was just surprised you got guage with one yarn of that weight when two were required. But I should know by now that Mel can do anything when it comes to knitting! I have a couple more questions for you -- I hope that's OK. I am knitting the Levitate Wrap now (and seriously disappointed in the instructions, btw - for a paid pattern, they are pretty crappy). I am knitting the bottom band now. I am wondering if you knit the bottom band with the same size needles as the front neck band? The instructions call for putting all the stitches at the bottom of the sweater on US 8 needles (which is the same size as the front band was knit on), but then call for a US 6 when casting on the 11 stitches for the double knitting. I am guessing this is just for the cast on, but it's unclear. And, in fact, the instructions refer to 5mm (US 6) needles AND 5 mm (US 8) needles. Well, you can't have it both ways! (In fact, 5mm is size 8, as I'm sure I don't have to tell you.) I am also wondering if you made the ties on the right front and at he left side seam the lengths called for in the pattern, or found something else was better? And, last, but not least....I have a question about another project of yours. I am going to make the Sienna Zipper Genser next. The pattern is in the same Sadnes Garn pattern book as the Haley Genser, which you have made. How did you translate the instructions from Norwegian? Just Google Translate? My husband is actually Swedish, so I thought he would be a help, but it turns out knitting is its own language. By the way, it was seeing how beautiful you Haley was that inspired me to make the Sienna, which also has some fat cables. Thanks for your channel - I love your analytical approach to things. And you knit beautifully!

    • @stringthingsbymel
      @stringthingsbymel 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi, sorry for the late reply. Funny, I didn't notice that needle size error in the Levitate Wrap. I probably didn't see it because I always refer to the metric sizes - so I used 5 mm needles for the bottom band. I also made the ties the same length as stated in the pattern. My Sandnes Garn booklet has both English and Norwegian translations of all the patterns. Maybe double check? If not, I could scan a copy of the Sienna pattern and email it to you. I recommend using the contact form on my website (stringthingsbymel.com) to send me your email address (that way it stays private) and we can continue correspondence via email.
