A brave venture, given the time of year - and I think you made the best of it, aided & abetted by the magic farmhouse! Serendipity is alive & well in Norway. With me, years ago, it was a tiny log cabin that emerged like a mirage from the horizontal snow, with room for my bike, my shivering wet body and a heap of wood ready chopped for the miniature stove. Ragnarøk was averted that night! When you go back to Tromsø in 24/7 daylight, BTW, the island of Senja is an absolutely jaw-dropping destination, if you want to combine biking & hiking. Every bit as impressive as Lofoten but without all the crowds ...
@@Cycling366 BTW, worth bookmarking for when you're on foreign terrain are the sites howtopronounce and forvo, both of which have audio files. Kvaløya is there, for instance, as is Vågen as a separate place-name element (Whale-Island Bay). Unfortunately, because contributions are not monitored, you do get the occasional spoof performance, like those found on TH-cam's PronuncialManual, which are good for a laugh ... as long as you actually spot them!
Thanks for the beautiful video. The scenery (and your cinematography) were amazing. I particularly enjoyed the behind the scenes information. Thanks so much!
Beautiful. My family was there in September. No snow but we saw the northern lights. And drove the snowy road you cycled. My son and I talked of coming back to bikepack. This inspires us!

Thank you very much! Absolutely! Best burger I’ve had for a while. It’s very cathartic coming inside when it’s -15 outside. Makes you appreciate how comfortable life is!

That looks amazing and pretty full on considering the conditions. I've only been to Arctic Norway in the summer, which was fabulous, winter looks very challenging for bikepacking. Well done.
That was very brave heading up there in the start of winter! In freezing conditions, I would recommend having the bladder on your back under your jacket. This way it wil not freeze. After each sip, make sure you blow back the water from the tube back into the bladder.
I really appreciate the honesty in the couple of your videos I've seen so far. You're totally honest about your minor mistakes and slight misadventures so that others can learn. Like the slog up the farm track or the frozen camelbak. I've done many cycle trips to the Arctic, and if it's below about minus 10, you either need to wear your camelbak under your jacket or just carry a big thermos. The extra advantage of a big thermos being warm drinks all day long !
Cheers Kevin! Never goes perfectly so may as well share it haha. Yeah the bladder freezing was an eye opener, couldn’t believe how cold it got so quickly. Thanks for watching!

To avoid the water from freezing, have the bottle, or GOOD quality camelback on your body. The cheap way is to take a normal bottle, and make a "harness" with one large sock, (cut a hole through it lengthwise, not all the way down) and hang it around you neck, under your outer jacket. Your body-heat will keep it liquid even down to at least -44 c if you are active. If you want to use a camelback, make sure it's of high quality, as you do NOT want it to leak on your back in the winter. It also needs to be under the jacket. To prevent the water in the hose from freezing, you need to "blow" it back into the camel-back when you finish a sip. For "unlimited" water, refill the bottle/camelback with snow when there is still some water left, and keep going. No need to stop and sett up a boiler for more.

Confidence is as much about as having the correct equipment and just as importantly knowing how to use effectively. Then slowly expanding your expertise. But then we all know that anyway.
I do get nervous before trips like this - definitely not just you. I just try to remember that the adventures I’m more worried about tend to be the best ones when I look back on them. Go for it! :)
Ahhhh! I can practically smell winter and this makes me miss it so much (I might actually get murdered for saying this). You were incredibly lucky with the weather and the aurora the days you visited. Generally I suggest staying a bit longer and renting a cheaper place cause the weather's not always this nice and it's very unpredictable. I just wanna put it out there; Tromsø is incredibly light polluted, now more than ever before. Only when you leave town and the suburbs will you have a proper aurora sighting :) 10:11 It's pronounced something a-la Kvaloyvaagen Anyway gorgeous filming and really well put together! Thank you!

Cheers Ian! Appreciate all the comments over the year! :)
Sorry it's late! Christmas got in the way. You have won a set of Christmas Elf Brickcaps! Let me know where you want them sending and I'll get them posted out to you! - Drop us a message on Cycling366 Instagram :)
@Cycling366 have sent a message buddy 😉
Amazing video, great photography, love the way you keep the commentary and film separately.
Thanks very much Mark! I’m glad you like the format :)
Awesome.. your filming and choice of music is superb.
Thank you very much! Thanks for watching
Fabulous video, love the overhead drone shot of you pushing. How strict were Norwegian Air on the bike bag weight? as flying to Oslo in January with my Fatbike and with the 22kg bike weight limit it's going to be tight.
Thanks very much! Yes I liked that one too. Took forever to get right haha. Tbh the bike box was so big it didn’t fit in their conveyor belts so they asked me how heavy it was and I said 30kg 😀 😜

Beautiful country. What bike did you use ? Did you have studded tyres ?
Thanks David, I’m riding a Sonder Frontier. Video review is coming out on Friday so you can see a bit more of it :) I had studded tyres waiting in the garage but decided to go for the 3” WTB rangers at low pressure instead. Probably could have done with the spikes in hindsight
I have always wanted to visit Norway (still on my bucket list) and love that you did this and what a challenging time of year. I’ve been following your channel and rides on Strava ever since I started gravel cycling in July 2021 after having bilateral total hip replacements. I have 6500 outdoor miles on my bike so far and don’t intend to ever stop. I can’t wait to visit other countries and cycle. Thank you so much for this inspiring trip. Would also love to know what clothes you used to stay warm. Happy Yuletide! ☺️❄️🎄
Nice one! Keep it up :) I will be doing a video next week of the Arctic bikepacking gear I used so that should answer your question! Thanks for watching :)
Great video in challenging conditions.
Cheers Mark!
Fantastic video and superbly produced and edited, wish I was thirty years younger so I could travel the same routes as you do 👍
Cheers Alan! I’m sure there’s scope to do some of the trips - just got to work around your limitations!
Amazing you found that hostel and the burger place, wow. I wonder how much the hostel cost and the burger and chips? Inspired to see someone doing this in winter.
Thanks very much! Hostel cost less than £50 and the burger place I think was normal burger place prices 😛 not sure. I just paid the price to get the hot food haha
excellent ,I'm 60 this month ,I wish I had the confidence to do this .
Go for it! :)
What an inspirational video. It makes me want to take on a similar adventure. It would make such a trip more special with some Brick Caps
Thank you Steve! Glad you were inspired! Good luck winning the brick caps :)
Once again another inspiring video and a great decision with the new Sonder and gear
Thanks very much! All the best :)
What a great video, I would love to see the northern lights
Thanks very much! It was on my bucket list so happy to have seen them a few times :)
Great video 🙂
Thanks a lot for watching :)

Amazing ride through very remote countryside, luckily you didn't bump into any local wolves!
Thank you! Not sure there are wolves up there but thankfully I didn’t haha
-15C, too cold for me. Chapeau 👏
Too cold for me too really! Limit myself to one/two freezing trips a year and sunshine for the rest! Thanks for watching :)
Only when you leave town and the suburbs will you have a proper aurora sighting :)
10:11 It's pronounced something a-la Kvaloyvaagen
Anyway gorgeous filming and really well put together! Thank you!
Thank you! Not long to wait now :)
Beautiful video!
Thank you
@@Cycling366 Less winter like but still beautiful. I rode on the Danish Himmerlandsstien a couple of weeks ago. You can see more here :-) th-cam.com/video/WQWmJbEJ9vg/w-d-xo.html
What a journey !. It reminds me of mine last year. I started my cycling journey from Tromso to Sommaroy. But I did it during Autumn. It was really tough for me since I didn't bring the proper gear. I nearly catched my death in a small quiet town in Brensholmen before reaching Sommaroy.
Damn! How so? I am going to NO in end of Dec. From Oslo, along the coast, and am trying to go to Trondsheim, and back by train. Do you have some tips?
Thank you! Autumn can be a really tough season for cycling. It can properly catch you out up there as I know too well! Would love to go to Sommaroy up to the Nordkapp
@@ILIJA2002 Some tips ?. Bring proper equipments and gears. I am sure that by now Norway has started to snow heavily especially in the north. Never make my mistakes. You must be physically fit especially mentally to cycle across Norway. Never make my mistakes. And good luck with your upcoming adventure in Norway. It will certainly give you an unforgettable experience.
How many liters was that front bag
I believe it was 65 litres 👍 Sea to Summit Big River
❤❤
Thank you :)
Damn vid made me fall asleep for 3hrs without even realising
Did its trick then
Did the farmer freeze and batteries
No idea what you’re asking here mate haha
@@Cycling366 dam typo did the cold freeze the batteries
@@Cycling366 did the camera freeze or switch off in those temps
So lonely yet so beautiful
Thanks very much! :)
Would never do a trip like you did. Even though I'm living in Norway. 😂
Probably sensible! 🤪 any other recommendations for places to Bikepack in Norway?
A bit chilly for me, but its great video.
It was a bit chilly for me too haha. Thanks for watching!
