So excited!
I read sword and sandal because i am BALLSY. I am a STUD. I don't have to find a grimdark series LIKE YOU MUAHAHAHAHAHA
If I recall correctly, HOTD was supposed to be the plot of the 3rd Schwarzenegger Conan movie, but he turned it down, and it went to Kevin Sorbo to become the Kull the Conqueror film. Memory might be off, but regardless, looking forward to this.
Excellent! (and finally an evening start time!) (One parting thought, if you've never watched the director's cut of the Conan movie with Arnold and Milius commenting as the film plays...Oh My GOD....)
Ha ha! That was hilarious!
Please cover in-depth that one Conan story where everyone just stands around in a hallway talking & trying to solve a murder mystery. There you go, one trolling comment. heheh
@CptSamelsSigils Hey, man, The God in the Bowl has one heck of an ending! I'll gladly do a whole livestream covering that story. Lol
⚔️💪🧙♂️📚
"What is best in life?" The open step, a feelt horse, a bumsider at your wrist, and the wind in your hair. "Wrong! Conan, what is best in life?" To educate your enemies, see them reading before you, and hear the audiobooks of their women.
you’re not wrong, one time to get points with a lady I listened to the audiobooks she suggested even they weren’t what I was into. some of them were pretty good!
'Laolaolao'. Brilliant.
Haha well I'm pumped! *arnold noises
BRILLIANT!!! hahaha
Great List! I only read Starship Troopers from that list- it left a lasting impression on me. Check out "The moon is a harsh mistress" by Heinlein as well- great companion piece to ST.
@@Jxd87 I've heard good things about that one. It will probably be the next Heinlein I read. 👍
Great review! These are on my shelf and on my TBR!
@@LiminalSpaces03 Hail, Chris! Read them! READ THEM NOW!!
That's like the Brown Jenkin of space otters!
@@TheBookGraveyard Yeah, if I start seeing that thing in my dreams, I might need to seek help.
I’m writing a science fantasy book and I realized I was more interested in the spiritual & social themes than the hard science of what I was writing, so I decided to order this trilogy to see how C S Lewis handled a similar theme. I’m looking forward to reading it! I also just read (and did a video review of) Jesus on Mars by Philip Jose Farmer. It was more thought provoking than I expected. Religion & science fiction are an interesting mix. Also in one of my random ebay book searches, I found a book called Singer’s Scherzo or something like that. Apparently it includes sh!t talking, alcohol otters, which that alien at the beginning of your video reminded me. Thanks for your review!
@@CptSamelsSigils Thanks for watching. I think Lewis does a fantastic job weaving the spiritual and philosophical elements into this story, so it's well worth your time. And good luck with the writing! 🤘
Thank you for the review it sounds interesting. Will have to add it to my tbr.
Great review! I read this trilogy a couple of decades ago so I’m bit fuzzy on the details of the story but I know I liked it. I think it’s time for a reread.
@@chrislydon4684 DO IT!! Also, thanks a bunch! 🤘
Really underrated series.
Glad to hear the book is solid! I'm a Christian myself and I've been wanting to get into C.S. Lewis for a while now. Grew up watching the first Narnia movie. After reading Till We Have Faces, I plan on reading this trilogy at some point.
@@RalphNC09 Awesome! Lewis's fiction is very witty and imaginative. One of my top 10 authors, for sure.
I bought this trilogy in a real nice box set❤ $3 at a thrift shop😊
@@robertlynn7746 Nice. That's a deal right there!
Oh stop, you know those space otters are cute. Great review Tim!
@BadTasteBooks The book does describe the hrossa children as being weirdly cute. I imagined little, 3-foot tall bipedal pugs.
So great to see a review of 'Out of the Silent Planet'! Lewis loved metaphor and allegory. No secret that Lewis was a Christian and his work espoused Christian thought and values. It's been over 40 years since I read this novel. Definitely time for a reread! Thanks Tim!
@@vintagesf Hail, Richard! Reread it. It's awesome!
It’s the Otters from South Park…The Allied Atheist Alliance!
@kevintowle9665 Trust me, these guys are much freakier and at the same time much more wholesome. 🤣
‘No, seriously ,’ Guildford protested, ‘I only objected to parts, not to the whole of your latest (story), Michael. Only to the first chapter and the end of the last one, really. But there! I suppose no one has ever solved the difficulty of arriving, of getting to another planet, no more in literature than in life. (…) Anyway, the opening chapters, the journey, of space-travel tales seem to me always the weakest. Scientifiction, as a rule: and that is a base alloy. Yes it is, Master Frankley, so don’t interrupt! Just as much as the word is an ill-made portmanteau: rotten for traveling with. And that goes for your machine, too, Ramer. Though it’s one of the better failures, perhaps.’ this is what Tolkien wrote (pretty obviously about "Out of the Silent Planet") in "The Notion Club Papers" his unfinished time travel novel. it was eventually published in histories of middle earth 9, Sauron Defeated
Iron Maiden released "Out of the Silent Planet" back in 2000, which I imagine was inspired by this book. After hearing your review, I think I might have to track down a copy.
@StewedEarth And I have some Maiden to listen to! 🤘 I'd recommend the book definitely. Cheers!
Tolkien did start writing his time travel novel. The Notion Club Papers. It’s incomplete, but it’s contained in The History of Middle-Earth: Sauron Defeated.
There’s a lot of variation from book to book in this trilogy. The second book is largely a philosophical dialogue, and the third book is a dystopian story combined with Arthurian legend.
@@OpponentofStupidity-k6s Interesting! Thanks for the heads up 👍
Good review Tim! CS Lewis does SF? I'm in!
@@GrammaticusBooks It is some SUPER flimsy pseudo-science, but Lewis writes it very well. Highly recommended.
thanks!
Cool. There exist a sorta kinda fourth book to the Space Trilogy. The character MacPherson in That Hideous Strength was first in an unfinished draft of another science fiction book, The Dark Tower.
Thanks for the review, I'm going to be reading this one later in the year. Did it interest you enough to read the whole trilogy?
@sfwordsofwonder Absolutely. Lewis's alien cultures were REALLY interesting to me and I want to see what other kinds of weird ideas he has on other planets in the rest of the trilogy.
Great review too btw!
It's funny you think Professor Tolkien had spare time. Wife, child, religious devotions, work, men's club, side gig. Fellow was grinding.
@RHampton Fair point. And that's not even factoring in his long, soulful contemplation on society's inevitable absorption by industrialism...while puffing on a good tobacco pipe, of course. No wonder he never finished that story.
great review!!! I really appreciate your Enthusiasm for books, regardless of age or era or genre, PS: I hope this year you and a friend can read and review an old ACE Double book. - part of me wishes some publisher would print books like that in the 2025's
@@ajaxplunkett5115 I'm actually reviewing a double of Ring Around the Sun & Cosmic Manhunt right now. I'll probably review both at the same time when I'm finished.
Very unfortunate font indeed! Or very clever 😅 I've only read one Anne mccathrey, Restoree, absolutely hated it. I've got a copy of the Ship that Sang, is it worth a gander?
I'd say so. It's apparently about a woman who has an incurable disease, and so, instead of confining herself to a wheelchair or sickbed for the rest of her life, she uploads her consciousness into a spaceship!
@@secretfirebooks7894 That does sound interesting. I'll give it a go. Doesn't seem fair to consign her work to the bin solely on a single book (and an early one, at that). Cheers!
I've read some Tarzan. Starship Troopers and Legend when I was a soldier (and nigh all the rest of Gemmel's work since.) Some Fafhrd and Mouser, albeit not necessarily the same stories you mentioned yet. All the Earthsea novels some couple decades ago, can't remember if it was pre or post military time. Gonna see if I can find some of that Imaro stuff too, and will check out Poul Anderson whom I've not read nor heard of til now. (Well, his name sounded familiar for some reason, but I'm pretty sure I ain't read him. Thought maybe he wrote "The Cold Equations" but that was another guy.) Maybe I'll check out that Assignment ____ series when I've finished reading Mack Bolan Executioner series and or The Destroyer novels!
Great list. The whole Cornwell series is a banger.
😂 “johnson!” 😂😂😂
Tim vs. Romance Books only on paper-view
Thanks!
Ah man, youtube deleted my comment! So, as I was watching and you were whining, I was thinking, but Tim, there might be some Gothics in there, but then surprise, I was humiliated, so I turned it off! Just kidding. Can you go back and see if there are any Gothics for me pleeease?? Haha Paperback Warrior did a podcast episode on Alistair MacLean. I would post the link but I think that's what got my comment deleted last time.
@@TheBookGraveyard You know what, just for you, I'll look for some Gothics next time I drop in. Just know that I'll be writhing on the inside the whole time I'm in that section.
@TheBookGraveyard And Eric's MacLean episode is in my watch later pile right now!
@secretfirebooks7894 you da man Tim! Haha. It should be easy to spot them because they are thinner than regular romance novels.
I like your taste in books. Wish there were more booktube channels like yours.
Alistair Maclean was hugely popular here in the UK in the 60's and 70's, every bookshop or newsagent had a wide selection of his books, alongside an array of Sven Hassel and Leo Kessler's blood 'n' guts WWII novels. Several of Maclean's works were made into films, most notably Where Eagles Dare ( I think The Guns of Navarone might have been one of his, I could be wrong) but he seems to be largely forgotten now. I didn't know that Boris Vallejo did Star Trek covers, so you learn something new every day...
@@parazatico9030 I've heard of MacLean before, which is really the only reason his book caught my eye. Excited to give it a try!
So weird story...right before I saw your thumb "Resurrection", the work I had just finished reading was John Donne's sonnet 'To Their Scattered Bodies Go'. Holy Sonnet #7 on the resurrection. Hey it's Sunday! Nice book haul Tim.
@GrammaticusBooks It's a sign!! ... I don't know what it's a sign of but IT'S A SIGN!!!
Ha, cool, hope you like it. I did clean the floor enough to walk around in the main library yesterday. I need to video the collection to stop buying doubles and triples I don't need. \m/
@GoblinOfGygaxinor Yes, Goblin library tour needs to happen! Show us the ancient tomes!!!
@@secretfirebooks7894 Posted a teaser pic in the 'Community' section on my channel page for you.
Havent read him but Maclean is supposed to have some cool action adventure books. Good find! Also, I Love the Reviewbrah clip there. Haha
My obsession with old memes will never die!!
I had a lot of 13 Maclean's but sold them to pay for the other books I bought that day.
Huh, looks like someone has a J. D. HardON for some Romance novels. You know we have to do one for E.E.B.S now.
Please GOD read a romance novel on EEBS!
@@PulpMortem *sigh Why do I open my big, fat, stupid mouth?!
@secretfirebooks7894 yesssssss!!!
@BadTasteBooks you heard it here first, ladies and gentlemen. So light some candles, pour yourself a glass of box wine and hop on the dryer as the E.E.B.S take on ROMANCE! Fabio cover and @BadTasteBooks as a guest are mandatory.
@@PulpMortem lol I wouldn't say no
Nice!
There are so many great "old" books (books never get old imo), you are doing a great job recommending these gems. Starship Troopers is my least favorite book of your list. I like it, but I think I like The Forever War and even Bug Wars more. My favorite reads of 2024, in no particular order: Aubrey-Maturin series (reading it for the first time, made it to book 16 as of now and loved all of them), Manifest Delusions trilogy and Obsidian Path trilogy by Michael R. Fletcher, Between Two Fires, The Blacktongue Thief, The Daughters' War all by Christopher Buehlman (loved all of them), The Child Thief and Slewfoot by Brom, first three books of the Red Rising series, The Ruins, Boys in the Valley and bunch of extreme horror and other stuff that I use for palate cleansing...😉 I went a little overboard with my last couple of hauls so I have enough reading material for the next two years (at least), but I guess you can never have enough books...
@@thomasrobach3552 Some great reads right there, as well. Yes. NEVER too many books!!
So, what's the character in your channel logo? I'm just curious.
@ryangreen6255 His name is Suulfurgorr. He's a villain from one of my books. He's a demon lord who likes fire.
@secretfirebooks7894 cool
