In this video I am out with the NZFWDA as part of the 2023 AGM. We do some tough river work and visit some really cool locations, not without issues. I wasn't the only one to break things, but didn't get much on camera. So come along for the journey and check out how deep some of these river crossings are.

North Cape & 90 Mile Beach Subi Adventure
What tyres were you running on that trip? What pressures were you using? Did I see you in a video heading Far North in a Suzuki recently (July 2024)?
i went there labour weekend 2023 and was an amazing trip for the first time at mavora
I don't think it's anything at all to do with the subaru it's tottaly down to your throttle control ie rpms are constant not fluctuating up and down that's the secret to keeping moving
You have inspired me to get back to off-roading although I only have a Subaru now. What camera/phone mount did you use?
I'm pretty sure I found that same hole where you bent your bash guard a few years back in the buggy
Just wondering how long does it take to travel from Lake Mavora up to Walter Peak Station and would one need to be an experienced 4wd driver to do this trip ? Cheers
Shocking the amount of slash from forestry in some areas of background.
Just found this site, great filming. Danseys Pass is my fvourite piece of NZ, love Otago. Spent time here rock hunting while boyfriend and his friends were gold panning. Pitched tents in area before the pub. Every night we ended up at pub, love it.
Thanks for that we going there this coming summer good you showed the track just what I wanted to see have you been up to forks hut
Cool shot of the rock and truck man.
I went there on my adventure bike in March last year. I got a code for the gate because I thought it was the right thing to do to support the track. But a few bikes rode down to the beach to by pass it. A 4x4 also got around it somehow. It's sad to see the state of the track in parts. Nightmare on an adventure bike.
I enjoy your Vids. I've tramped the Mavora thru to the Routeburn track, total awesome place. Cheers
You gotta be the most sensible off roader I have watch in the years I have been offroading. To many clowns killing the 4x4 seen now with stupidity. P.B
Jerks in 2 tonne mobile panic rooms smashing the trails to shit. This is why so many of them are being closed like Mavora.
Im sorry, what? At what point are we 'smashing the trails to shit'? There is no other way to drive it. Tracks like this exist because people drive them and keep them open. I can assure you we did not cause any damage to this track.
Awesome video definitely looks awesome track . I so need to do what you have done with your Vitara and lifted it after market wheels and tyres X Rocks Bull bar and snorkel so I can start to get out there and do some of these tracks myself instead of just beach only for me . Because every bit of off road it bottoms out
Thanks! The mods have definitely helped, but it's still pretty low slung. Good bash guards are a must I reckon
Cockeye has always been a mission aye awesome video as always sam super sick drive bro! ☺️
Thanks! Definitely a cool track. Would like to go back sometime
Well done, thanks for sharing.
Hey mate, What time of the year did you do this? cheers
This was in May last year
Awesome video I just started watching your videos last night. The enjoyment of driving a GV Vitara I’m driving one too. But at least you have the 40 mm lift and snorkel and Bull Bar I don’t have any of that at the moment. 😊
How can you make a video about Pureora Forest without even mentioning the wonderful ancient podocarps that the forest is famous for? At 15 Min. after driving for ages thru cutover bush you finally reach the majestic avenue of ancient podocarps, Rimu, Totara, Kahikatea and Matai, you don't even acknowledge them. Do you actually see anything on your trips apart from your 4WD bonnet ? It seems you might as well drive in a boring pine plantation.
The poor suk won't last long on tracks like that 😢
No you're right there! I don't think I would take it places like that again. It's not really what I set it up for
Yahoo I live n Kawerau. Have been to the falls and also Matahi dam. For camping try lake aniwhenua.
Awesome video Sam. Old Lockie saving the day again.
He definitely is a legend!!
"This is the Rakaia... I think." Please explain that confusion.
I'm just following the group on this one, so didn't know where we were going beforehand.
Awesome, it looked like you were floating in some of those. What PSI did you have your tyres at. Keen to hear what you do underneath.
I'm sure I must have been floating, but it was still moving forward somehow. Going to have to protect the trans crossmember somehow.
Was running around 20psi
Amazing where the zooks can go aye what a awesome trip Sam! AC Fab in Christchurch do gearbox and belly bash plates for JT vitaras bro I'm getting a set for mine
It's definitely impressive. I'll have to look into those bash guards, tho might just end up making something myself.
@@SwampChook yeah 100% be way cheaper aye nice 😎
Went through there last year in the family Odyssey. Mrs wasn't happy.
Nice Surf you've got! 2lte?
Thanks, she's a 1kzte
Music - techno? No. :-) I much prefer the sound of the motor and the tires on the gravel. Whichever though, the volume needs to be quite low, i.e. quite a bit lower than you had it in this video, so that viewers are not having to constantly adjust the volume up and down between your narration and the music.
As a family we did the trip up just to Colville. Some in my vehicle and our younger daughter in hers behind us. Unfortunately, I received two speed camera fines from the same camera within a month- one for each vehicle. :-) It is hard to keep track of all the 50k bits as you gaze at the scenery on the way up the coast. Need to go back up there soon but the list of places to go keep growing, thanks in no small part to your videos!
I grew up in Te kopuru, I hunted pigs on foot from Te Maire to the light house. Im guna have to do it by 4x4 now after watching you guys. Thanks for sharing your adventure.
Beautiful place mate. I got a L300 too, great vans!
Thanks, and they sure are. Will go most places
How difficult is the track? Any idea what grade it would be? Planning to go solo and have a look in feb if its dry.
I'm not sure how the grading works..but should be okay in the dry. It's all pretty hard base, just keep an eye on the ruts.
Just FYI, the land in-between the lighthouse and waituna stream belongs to Nagti Hinewaka. You drove over various 600 - 800 year old maori structures, build by the direct descendants of Kupe. Campinm is not permitted there. Only place where you can camp is north of the river. Good to see you didnt go onto the beach and wreck the dotterel nesting grounds / seal colonies. Please be very respectful when entering this whenua, the place is tapu to many.
Thanks Sam I really appreciate you videoing this, and putting in the hours with the editing, for us to enjoy. I also really appreciate you laidback and laconic style. Ian
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks Sam, really enjoying these videos that are not "Off Road" as such but so much more satisfying that taking the usual route. Suzi seems to be doing well and the mods you have done really have enhanced its capabilities. Well done you.
Great vid bro
Hi Sam. What map are you using that tells you public v private road? Cheers NT.
Great video. What tires are you running? Cheers
Hi Sam. Can i ask you What's the best entry point into the track? I have been down there couple of times, but beach driving only. Pretty keen to explore the back track too, good to have another option In case the tide comes in. Cheers
Cool video man! Super cool seeing a different take on the trip. Thanks again for taking me through here, was amazing!
Thanks man! I know what you mean it was definitely cool to see your one. And no worries at all, anytime! It was a great trip
Great video Sam, glad to see youtubers collaborating in NZ. Lots of that going on over the ditch and glad to see it happening here too!
Heya Sam! Awesome to see you both in this video! I'm keen to tag along when you hit up Pouto again or any track really :)
Thanks! and hmm that's an idea when I get the Outback back on the road we should take the Subi's down there
Definitely keen!
Awesome video Sam. As I said to Daniel yesterday, great to see you two doing this sort of colab. Hopefully some more??
Thanks! it was really cool to do, He's a great guy and seemed to work quite well. So you never know
I was so happy seeing you both! Follow you both so this was awesome!
Big fan of both you guys, awesome
Looks like it's right there from the bottom, but that climb seems to go on for ever. How long did it take you to get up there from the highway?
It does take a little while. It's all so open, so the views going back down are incredible. Its around 45min each way I think.
do you know if ild be able to bring my 4wd into some of the hunting areas in Pureora?
Awesome trip mate, proves anything 4wd, just get out there, look after the places and leave it better than you found it and just do it. Hoping to head down there in December, I'll at least make it to Athol, but like you, anything can happen and its a loose plan. 2 week trip ex CHCH, ideally as solo and ex Human contact as possible, see if the big 80, the dog and me don't get lost on any adventures before hand or mishaps! Spent allot of time up there as kids, back in the 80s, haven't been there since 07 on my last adventure, so this makes me a bit homesick for the deep south, seeing this. As for the rubbish, this is an ever increasing problem, which endangers access for all of us, so well done on cleaning it up again like you hate it being there and worse having to clean it up, more so for the type of people that do that crap, probably hunters, but if it is 4wders then give ya selves an upper cut! Its a scum thing to do! end of no excuses. Old Mossy went to primary school there the main street still looks pretty much the same, remember that garage, awesome trip dude🤘
Hey man thanks for the comment. Sounds like a good trip you have planned there, I just love the South Island. There just seems to be a general lack of respect for these places by some. Plenty of good folks out there, but always the few that cause the problems. Sounds like you have the right idea!
Excellent footage - enjoy your work!
