I passed HSK1 test after ~1/2 year of duolingo and 1/4y of chinese class. I'm in a stage right now where I can identify the sound of certain words, words which meaning I don't know from the top of my head, but at least now I recognize that they got spoken out. I am beating myself up over finding the correct path to take. Should I learn to identify tones at first and do nothing else, should I broaden it a bit and also mix in more writing skills? Should I emphasize on talking, idk ... Your video put all of that into perspective. I cannot live in china, so this will become a life long journey for me. Raising expectations on myself on finding the correct path without knowing anything about those paths is something I should not put on myself I guess.

We are being programmed at birth and them with transits we are constantly conditioned.. sounds far fetched but its a nice possibility.. as in we are programmed even tho most of the time we think we take from our parents etc

why is mandarin so hard

The first girl, she sounds like a native English speaker, even using words and expressions like a native would (IMO).

I am learning to read and write it much faster than understanding spoken Chinese. And when I speak it I must sound like a lunatic because my tones suck 😂

I spent 30 years in US and still don't speak fluently.

For me, life is all about experiences.

I lived in China for 2.5 years and had weekly Chinese lessons while living there. While I felt my language skills were starting to increase rapidly by the time I left, I was still very much a beginner. 7 years later now I’ve restarted my language journey. While I still know much of what I learned before, I’m more aware now than ever that I have a long way to go.

That being said I am delighted to be back making videos and look forward to continuing! Thanks for sticking with me and hope you enjoyed the videos!

Language skills are just a tool to facilitate the engagement. I studied in China, too, in the 80s, but never chose to cultivate a fluency in Mandarin and I’ve forgotten most of what I learned Jack’s videos make me wish I had stuck with it. It’s never too late, though, and Jack and other TH-camrs in the genre inspire many viewers to pursue language learning. Good on him.

this is bizarre bro, who is learning a language once a week and expecting to make any progress? of course you can only say a few sentences after a year, because you studied for like 2 full days up to maybe a week ... anyone seriously studies can reach hsk 2 or 3 in a year

I love how Jack brings the focus back to his subject by praising their English and uplifting their spirits. It’s a skill you can learn regardless of the language involved. These videos are less about language learning as they are about learning how to interact with people in the most positive way. The proof is that even if the conversation was monolingual, it’s the intention that matters, and the character and social skills of the speaker. The linguistic jujitsu adds the element of surprise but Jack employs it to get the most cheerful response possible. It’s a formula that works if the person employing it has high social/emotional intelligence and knows how to talk to strangers in a respectful manner. That’s what makes his content so compelling. The impression he makes on his contacts speaks for themselves.

I’m glad I got to study in China at Shanghai East Normal University when I did. It was spring of 1989 and I stayed in the international students dorm and everyone was very friendly and interested in practicing their English with an American. That situation has changed since then. I’m sure I wouldn’t recognize the country if I went back today. The big development boom transformed the whole country. In those days there were more bikes than cars. I have so many fond memories of China and it’s nice to see all these wonderful young people having such great exchanges with Jack. Both parties in these conversations reflect well on their respective countries. They show how we can communicate in a positive way across borders.
