I lived in China for 2.5 years and had weekly Chinese lessons while living there. While I felt my language skills were starting to increase rapidly by the time I left, I was still very much a beginner. 7 years later now I’ve restarted my language journey. While I still know much of what I learned before, I’m more aware now than ever that I have a long way to go.

Hi all! So sorry I’ve been away and haven’t published any videos! I recently started a new job, and it’s been a little difficult for me to find the time. That being said I am delighted to be back making videos and look forward to continuing! Thanks for sticking with me and hope you enjoyed the videos!

Language skills are just a tool to facilitate the engagement. I studied in China, too, in the 80s, but never chose to cultivate a fluency in Mandarin and I’ve forgotten most of what I learned Jack’s videos make me wish I had stuck with it. It’s never too late, though, and Jack and other TH-camrs in the genre inspire many viewers to pursue language learning. Good on him.

this is bizarre bro, who is learning a language once a week and expecting to make any progress? of course you can only say a few sentences after a year, because you studied for like 2 full days up to maybe a week ... anyone seriously studies can reach hsk 2 or 3 in a year

I love how Jack brings the focus back to his subject by praising their English and uplifting their spirits. It’s a skill you can learn regardless of the language involved. These videos are less about language learning as they are about learning how to interact with people in the most positive way. The proof is that even if the conversation was monolingual, it’s the intention that matters, and the character and social skills of the speaker. The linguistic jujitsu adds the element of surprise but Jack employs it to get the most cheerful response possible. It’s a formula that works if the person employing it has high social/emotional intelligence and knows how to talk to strangers in a respectful manner. That’s what makes his content so compelling. The impression he makes on his contacts speaks for themselves.

I’m glad I got to study in China at Shanghai East Normal University when I did. It was spring of 1989 and I stayed in the international students dorm and everyone was very friendly and interested in practicing their English with an American. That situation has changed since then. I’m sure I wouldn’t recognize the country if I went back today. The big development boom transformed the whole country. In those days there were more bikes than cars. I have so many fond memories of China and it’s nice to see all these wonderful young people having such great exchanges with Jack. Both parties in these conversations reflect well on their respective countries. They show how we can communicate in a positive way across borders.

The first lady was BS'ing. Chinese work culture is as bad as the US, maybe worse. I've heard that a lot of office workers don't leave until their boss leaves, sometimes you just play on the computer or whatever. But I know that a lot don't. As for the clients, every client is a VIP client. The clients always ask for more and lower price. The client always wants more. The boss promises more and the worker has to deliver. Even if you stay up late and get up early. No sleep? No problem. Because the client is VIP. Always. Lol.

I refuse to believe this 10years to become fluent!? In 10 years you can be a heart surgeon and you don’t spend half of the time that you take practicing like you said U live in China and work with Chinese and you still not fluent?! I have seen a 10 year old Chinese who is fluent , if you put that much time and effort and you nearly dedicated your life and still took you more than 10 years then you are dumb

it took me 4+ years to get there with no days off through these years although i took “hsk4” within my first 4 months”0 to 4th month without prior knowledge of any chinese “score 201 that didn’t make me even close to the ‘F’ of fluent! so yall gotta be patient and dedicated to it. Why she got such an attitude

The best video yet on the truth of language learning. What most TH-cam "polyglots" do is a magic trick. Learn some basics, including everyday slang, get the accent down, and edit the crap out of your very short interactions to make it seem like you are fluent. Jack knows what he is talking about. I'm sure there are exceptions in the same way that some people are musical prodigies. But average folks like you and me take many years of very hard work to achieve an advanced level. Until we have Matrix-style language downloads into our brains, this will still be the case. Thanks, Jack for telling the truth. Great video!
