    Hey man, as a fellow northerner, do you have any advice on learning mandarin? I'm currently learning through italki but I would like any advice especially about pronunciation. Thanks man 🇬🇧

    • @BritishJackTalks
      @BritishJackTalks  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Best tip is find a method of studying you most enjoy then do it lots. For me it was always conversation practice so I focused on language partners and cheap 1 on 1 tutors. Lessons I focused on what I wanted to talk about and not text books really. I find this most fun and so I'm more inclined to put the hours in.

      Xiaoma got really animated in a recent podcast about how traditional Chinese language instruction (“writing first”) puts the cart before the horse. He explained how speaking first is more important. Chinese teachers tend to get the order wrong because that was how they were taught at school in formal instruction - but when you think about it, Chinese is first spoken at home before a lick of instruction at school. Kids speak it before they learn to read and write it at school (with the exception of learning to write their names). Why then do we reverse the order for non-native speakers?
      I thought he had a very good point!

      Probably my top tip to someone starting from scratch, would be research scholarships and get yourself over there for 1 year at a university studying mandarin. Theres an absolute tonne of scholarships that cover the majority of costs, and it will provide such a solid base for you!

    Hi fella whats your best way to learn mandarin in england i struggle with the tones any advice

    • @utha2665
      @utha2665 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have been learning Mandarin for about 10 years on and off and I think the best way is just to get out there and speak it. Don't be afraid of mistakes and people will correct you. Also listen to as much content as you can, watch Chinese dramas, there's plenty on TH-cam, my wife (she's Chinese) watches them all the time. Many have both English and Chinese subtitles.
      There have been many times I have gotten the tone wrong and they look at me puzzled going what is he talking about and then they will understand the context if you explain. But, bottom line, don't be afraid to make mistakes.

Could it be that she knows someone at a nearby University and agreed to let people record their conversations with her? Practical education! maybe she should be charging a performance fee!

    Would be more impressive if you could converse in Cantonese as most Chinese citizens in UK are Cantonese speaking

    • @BritishJackTalks
      @BritishJackTalks  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Surely that would make it less impressive, as I have learnt the (according to you) the rarer language?

    • @BlueGiant69202
      @BlueGiant69202 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's not a bad idea! Perhaps there is a Cantonese language learning company in the UK or anywhere else in the world such as Hong Kong that would be interested in buying such a video and getting permission to create interactive dialogues. It might be a good way to generate passive retirement income for an elderly woman.
