In the end of the video there is a part where I explain what is going on in this video.
In this episode I need to cut the grooves in the wall posts that the wall planks will slide into.
I use a straight profile edge axe as a wide chisel to cut the lines and a smaller chisel to mark the width of the groove and chisel out the waist between the lines.
I also want to add knee braces or wind braces to the corner posts for structural strange.
I carve or hew these out of fresh green apple wood with axe and saw out dovetail or half lap joint with my two replicas of viking age saws.
I mark the tenons onto the posts and chisel out the mortise.
To secure the braces I use two different auger drills to drill through the posts and hammer in some pegs. For the wider pegs that secure the posts to the bottom frame I hammer in wedge from both sides in the peg to prevent it from ever moving.
Feel free to ask questions in the comments section below and I will answer to the best o my abillity.

They're looking so much better and I found the wool I'm using this time is much softer! I love seeing what you're doing because it encourages me to keep trying to improve my own work! Also, please be careful of those wild pigs, they can be a bit dangerous if they're startled!

      they are never 100% water proof but they are very moist resistant when properly treated. At some point moist will enter through the seams but with wool socks under you only feel the moisture not the cold. I am always surprised with how good they are. I recently made an experiment to only treat a pair of viking shoes from day 1 with homemade birch bark tar. this works surprisingly well and is so far the most weather resistant pair of historical footwear i own.

    Rasmus my friend, this is just amazing! It's absolutely fascinating to watch the process coming along! And beautifully shot too, so captivating! You cut the grooves in the vertical posts off centre, is that to allow space for the 45° braces? Or is there another reason? I'm thrilled you've got an experienced blacksmith making some extra tools for you, that's brilliant. 😁 Sounds like the blacksmith's tool you're talking about is a "hot cut" tool. They can either be in the form of a hand held tool called a hot chisel, or as a tool for an anvil where the cutting edge faces upwards. They usually fit into the square hardy hole and I've known them as a "hot cut hardy tool". Viking age anvils were of course much smaller than later ones, but I could easily imagine a Viking age smith using a tree stump or large log with a separate anvil, horn/bick, and hot cut tool all set into holes in the wood. Keep up the fantastic work, I can't imagine how satisfying this is going to feel when you've finished! 😀 Thank you again for sharing this wonderful journey with us! All the best my friend!

    • @RAMUNI-Viking
      @RAMUNI-Viking 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hello Ingvar. The position of the grooves has 3 reasons: i wanted to use my oak stick, to allow space for the braces on the inside and also placing the grooves and alas the walls towards the outside of the structure i gain a bit more "space" on the inside for shelfes, or hanging stuff etc. the blacksmith tool is excactly like you mention. I am planning to have stump where my different small anvils are mounted in. as always thanks for watching and for taking the time to write:) stay safe

    Very nice work! I like hearing your thought process about the construction, look forward to hearing about the archaeology. Your mortise and tenon joints are about the fit that I usually see in timber framing (I have been told that you should be able to drive the joint together with your hat), but often framers will "draw bore" the holes for the pegs so that they pull the joint tight as they are driven through the offset holes.

    • @RAMUNI-Viking
      @RAMUNI-Viking 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      thank you John:) one thing I have found is also that my material - old and bonedry pine dont do too well if its to snug and the peg will split it. I suppose if you had some semi dry oak it would be a different story. Definately not any draw bore here:) i dont dare.

    Thank you for another great film. I love working in wood, and have done many projects over the years, including building a super structure on a boat hull. I did all this using hand tools, as I love the slower process of creating. Even though we now have power tools and robots to make things for us today, there is nothing more satisfying then the organic process of creating things using the tried and tested methods of past times. I am enjoying seeing you build this structure, especially in a natural environment, surrounded by all that lovey wildlife you feature. Keep up the good work. U Are so blessed to live where u do . I saw a red fox the other day ..wich is a rarity here for being just on the outskirts of town the wildlife in your area is amazing ...dome are envious or jealous of other ppls home clothes or cars not me i just wish i could see wolves and ravens close to home ..lol

      Its the real things that matter. I am very fortunate to have this kind of wildlife close. But still it takes alot of effort to see them and get close enough to film. I have not seen a fox in a long time. I see them next to the House building site but only at night on the trailcam. Never seen a fox in day light here for 8 years since we moved here

    More beautiful scenery and experiences! I have wanted to build a low-tech homestead and live mostly like that while parking my automobile on the edge of the land, hidden, but it's so hard to choose "where" to do it. I'm in the US. Till I choose where, I turn to good books and videos.
