Lovely and interesting video! We make "Birka bread" with spelt and oat flour, some honey a little salt, butter (some use lard) that is melted a little in warm water before making the dough and fennel or cumin. Bake in dry pan. Will try your bread too,
Almost looked like sugar cookies there in the wooden bowl. Makes me want to try this type of flatbread out on my next camping trip. Also - great to see that you use the bellows for building the fire up. I want to build my own small bellows just to prove I can for a useful tool.
thank Rasmus for another nice video. May I give you a tip: it is better to bake on glowing charcoal/ash than with an open fire. you can control the baking process better, just like you do with a dutch oven
When I saw this video I knew one thing. I want to make it. I made it, and ate forst one. Taste good, plain, with something on it tastes better. Soon I will do next batch. With different flour and I will see if butter can be exchanged with just animal fat.
What are your thoughts on the spiral grills? I think there have only been a few found and there is some arguments about what they were really used for. I have made a few and used them to cook flat bread but they don’t seem very practical to me.
When i went to the museum to see and touch the axe that me and my blacksmith friend has a project about we were shown many small spirals like the one you talk about. The ones we Saw were idendical to ones found at uppsala. The chief archologist we talked to expalined that they were found in relation to buildings and often many at the time. They Are believed to be dragon like decoration along the ridges of the roof a bit like the neck/prow of the ladby ship. I dont know about find of the big spiral grills but something suggest they could be decoration for important buildings. Just my 10 cents.
There is quiet a consensus that women has a lot of power in the viking society:) and also i think reenactment is always reflecting the present time in values etc. Thanks for watching.
Thank You for the valuable information and presentation. I noticed that you use butter frequently. How did "Vikings" make butter? What did they use for a churn and storage containers? Skal, my friend.
I dont have acces to my books right now but I believe we have several finds of the bottom end of churns. The round plate with the holes. I am going to Attemt to recreate one, and the butter, one day:)
@@RAMUNI-Viking: So it was a wooden churn, similar to what we had 100 years ago? Fascinating! I should like to see that video sometime, when you get around to it. Skal, my friend!
I try to use ingrediens avaible in Denmark in the viking age, but Also what is availible to me in the wild. I dont research much on the food topic but mostly try to keep it simple:)
Lovely video, but that looks very dry. Try making more of a pancake batter (bit thicker of course), that will be much more pleasant. At least in my opinion.
It was a little dry because i overcooked it a little. But not as dry as it looks. But it is possible that a thinner dough Will improve the recipe. I Will try one Day. Thanks for watching and the feedback:) All the best
I must say i dont know. But if i remember right there is a find of a sword where the hilt and pommel is costumized and offset to favor a lefthanded fighter.

@@raymondflorke6959 hello Raymond. Sorry you feel this way. I do not have a precise recipe. But I would say 1 table spoon salt for 500 g flower and then add liquid (beer, Milk, water) while slowly mixing it in. Too little liquid and the dough Will be sticky. You know it is good when you can easily shape breads from the dough. I Hope you have the courage to try it out. Thanks for watching
It's really not that difficult, I've been makin bread by feel and look for years. Normally add less liquid then you think youlle need in small amounts until texture feels good to you. Basically you just want the dough dry enough to were it doesnt stick to your hands too much but wet enough you dont see raw dry flour.
Loved watching you prepare a simple delicious looking meal with a few wholesome ingredients over a fire❤

Yum . Would the flour have been rye ? Tak
Thank you. This is wheat flour. But barley and rye was also availible to the Vikings and most flour was probably a mix:)
So interesting! Did women always go on Voking trips or did the big viking warriors bake bread? 😊

@erikhoff5010 yes the remains found at hedeby indicates the design is very old
Very well done, what flour did you use?
I used a wheat flour i milled my self. I have a video about it on my channel:)
I bet that would be amazing with some home made honey butter 🤤
It sure would. I ate it with Honey on the bushcraft trip. Amazing:)
