Shikari was released in 1963; in the same year, OP's Phir Wahi dil layahoon, in 64 Kashmir ki kali, 65 Mere Sanam, in 66 Sawan Ghata, Bahare phir bhi Aayge, and Yeh Raar Phir bhi Aayge were all hits. However, OP added Sebastian, including GS, as his assistant from 65. Sorry for writing this.

G S Kohli has scored for several movies of the fifties and sixties and also said to assist OP Nayyar. We can find the OPN effect in his songs with the same Rafi and Asha as his singers. SHIKARI (1963) was one of the rare hit films with his music and nice to know about him in this program.

Only a music connoisseur of the stature of Peeyushji, with a keen eye for observation of quality, without quantity, can devote a full fledged two hour show on a music director who has composed only fifteen odd hindi films in his whole career. After being a part of this show on less celebrated MD G S Kohli, on 3rd January, 2025, nobody present in the audience has any iota of doubt about his decision to showcase this MD, high on talent but low on numbers. Almost all the songs played in the show go a long way to strengthen this belief in the ability of the MD to churn out one decent number after another in his limited output. They do have a semblance of his mentor OPN, here n there but there is no taking away from his imprint in every song. Though all the songs, even sad ones r a bit loud, they never put you off as in the case of similar songs composed by other MD's. They retain their charm n appeal even after sixty odd years. The loudness comes out of his origin in Northern belt of Punjab, famous for everything done with a bang. But the loudness of the songs is melded with exquisite melody in such a way that each number enters the recesses of our heart to be able to bring unadulterated joy n pure bliss. His music is class apart. As informed his duets sung by two female singers easily becomes his USP as in these songs he puts his best foot forward. Even if he had done only two films, Shikari n Faulad, his name wd still be among all time great music directors, as each song of these two films is good enough to place him honourably among the best music directors. Sajjad Hussain with almost similar amount of work but of high quality, readily comes to mind while assessing the work of G S Kohli. The insightful commentary of the erudite presenter with authentic details of anecdotes n incidents apart from fine nuances of the singing n orchrestration of the songs made the show enriching n worth its salt in the true sense of the word. All music lovers genuinely interested in knowing about the film songs of the highest order must listen to the recording of this show to familiarize themselves with the ins n outs of the music of this legendary MD, whose small amount of work is no way less in quality than the huge numbers of established music directors. Even the introductory medley of songs was enough to give a glimpse of the extraordinary things to follow. Pyar ki raah dikha duniya ko, Anjaan written song of Lambe Hath was a constant on radio on National days. This 1960 truly patriotic song is capable of generating goosebumps any time any day. Rafi is of course in his element in such songs in conveying full commitment n sincerity to the national cause in his perfect emoting. Incidentally this MD has largest amount of work with Anjaan only. He was a great dholak player n in almost every song composed by him dholak has a prominent role to play in the beauty of the song. A Rafi Asha romantic duet, of this film which is rare but a pleasant listen, Mohabbat karke kya loge, aji badle mein kya doge was played next. He had a sound knowledge of different musical instruments like table, santoor, sarod, flute which he used in his songs to great advantage. Being a fine arranger n orchrestration expert, the prelude, interlude n postlude portion of his songs shows him to be a brilliant music director overall. Geeta Dutt sings Jaan Nisar Akhtar lyrics in Mr India, Main Machis ki tili. a naughty number in her typical style. Kya soch raha matwale duniya ke khel nirale, another J N Akhtar song is an underrated, realistic n hard hitting song, composed n sung suitably. Faulad songs followed with Mat pooch mera hai kaun watan, written by Anjaan n sung by again Rafi with excellent use of trumpet n accordian. Universal values, most missing on national n international level r found in plenty in this song, hidden from common view. Jane jana yun dekho aaj nafrat se mujhe, Anjaan written n Asha B sung song with santoor n dholak in display, has shades of OPN music but leaves a lasting imprint of its power. Farooq Qaiser writes a stunner Yaad teri aayi main to cham cham royi re, sung by Asha B with excellent use of dholak, santoor, sitar n trumpet. Paanv mein chanjar chanjar mein ghungroo, with sarod, santoor, violin n dholak in royal attendance, is a nice song lost to posterity. Mana mere hasin sanam, Yogesh written Rafi sung song is too well known n dynamic to be lost sight of. Yogesh uses Urdu words in this song very powerfully. Namasteji music was informed to be sans any shade of OPN. Baharo tham lo ye dil, Mukesh LM romantic duet written by Anjaan with as usual enticing prelude is a lovely number which takes your breath away by its smooth flow. Mere do naina matware of Namasteji sung by LM, another one from the pen of Anjaan, with most complicated n complex but skillful composition has been sung to a fault by LM. This composition reminds one of Salilda difficult compositions. Another one of same film, written exceedingly well by Anand Bakshi, Humein kya jo harsoo ujale hue hai, is a superb song, lying unclaimed for glory. Prelude n use of dolak r the strong points of the song too. Asha Rafi romantic duet Pyar ki daman se lipte hum kaha tak aa gaye, with nice interlude of Char Darvesh was the next. A less heard song, it is worth a listen. Din bure hote hain halat bure hote hain, Anjaan, writes in sangdil for Rafi to deliver a superlative song. Short snippets of four songs were then played of Do matwale, Naujawan, Jang aur Aman n Faulad, Hamare sajan ghar aaye, aayeye aap tashrif le aayi, Tauba re ye shararat, Yahin katein mauj se Zindagi. In the last was the turn of his magnum opus film of 1963, Shikari songs. The super hit music of this film is famously said to have left behind many prestigious n big banner films music. F C Mehra after having a tiff with OPN in his earlier movie decided to take his assistant G S Kohli n he delivered like a winner. Maangi hai duaaein humne sanam, sung by Usha n Asha B, has prominent use of sarangi n , dholak. Ye rangeen mehfil gulabi gulabi by Asha B is flawless . Tumko piya dil Diya, sung by LM n Usha give voice to this Gidda or tappa style music of Punjab, This foot tapping number has guitar, dholak n claps for honourable company. Farooq Qaiser, who also wrote dialogues n screenplay of the film writes Chaman ke phool bhi tujh ko gulab kahte hain, sung by Rafi n LM. Farooq also writes Rafi LM, sung Agar main poochoo jawab doge. Flute, sarod, trumpet decorate the song. These two romantic numbers must rank amongst the all time great romantic numbers of HFM. Both of them r exclusive in their powerful effect on the listener thanx to extraordinary emoting by both the singers. After going through the above summary, one can have a measure of the greatness of this MD, spotlighted by Peeyushji with elan n aplomb, thanks to his painstaking research n laborious work. We salute him for his labour of love.🙏🙏

Sirji, as usual got the opportunity to add to my playlist. The rare gems. Just a small suggestion...the volume during your commentry and songs didn't match. During songs volume was loud. After the song finished and you started speaking we used to miss the begining.

There is one observation regarding Mukesh’s pitch. As you rightly pointed out, his early songs were lower pitched, which was his more natural voice. Which is also why he sounded so much like KL Saigal. However, as we progressed through the 50s and 60s, songs started getting higher pitched. While this made songs attract a specific type of audience, it slightly affected some singers. First was Mukesh who sang for most of his career in a scale that wasn’t his natural scale. Similarly, Lata Mangeshkar too had a lower pitched voice. But, with the advent of higher pitched songs, and the many duets she had to sing with Rafi, Lata did not have much of a choice. Hopefully you will do a show on some of these aspects of music, scales, and pitch. I have some analysis of the scales of some hit solos of Lata and Rafi. We can see how the scales changed over the years, particularly for Lata.
