Kya agaz hai ! Manna De wow ! These are real Bhule Bisre Geet. On Vividh Bharati they repeat same songs since year they are no longer bhule ya bisre geet. The producer on Vividh Bharti must watch your series. Uska career ban jaega. Machalti hui hawa ke cham cham is my favourite of the Chitrgupt/Majrooh combo. By the time the programme ended, I realised there are many songs which are my favourites but didn't know it's of this pair. Thanks for beautiful presentation.
Peeyushji, may I request you to present Ravi Shankar Sharma( Ravi) songs written by Sahir and Shakeel. Ravi was a great composer who gave us numerous melodious hit songs. He gave best award winning songs to all his singers. He should have got much more recognition than what he earned. It would be a treat to see your presentation of this great composer including his lesser known but highly melodious songs
Thank you for playing such rare treasures! I've discovered so many "new" old songs thanks to your show. Also your insights are very much appreciated - such as Majrooh saab's use of antonyms and Chitragupt's unique bridges. I’m going to pay more attention to these the next time I hear a song by either of them. Thanks so much for broadening my Hindi film music education!
Majrooh Sahab played perhaps the longest inning. He could create poetry from simple words. In a radio programme he told while he was travelling by train someone asked what was the time.Answer was paune do and Majrooh Sahab used the words रात के बज गये पौने दो
Chitragupt was an excellent composer and had to compete with many stalwarts during his times. The known fact was that he could not get the banners that could showcase his talents although his music was appreciated by one and all. We could see that he had a few hits but many misses as the music was highlighted only when the film was a commercial hit. Perhaps, few other films where he presented an excellent score could be remembered such as KALI TOPI LAL RUMAL and even VAASNA (1968) , PARDESI (1970) and INTEZAR (1972). Even in almost unknown films like MAI SHAADI KARNE CHALA and ROCKET GIRL (1961) his music shot to fame. Nice to remember him at this time !
Baam (بام) by the way is derived from Faarsi and stands for roof, rooftop or terrace. The great classical Urdu poet from Lucknow Hyder Ali “Aatish” in his celebrated Ghazal (which begins with “sun to sahih jahan mein hai”, sung incomparably by Begum Akhtar) has a shayr in it which goes: zeena saba ka Dhoondti hai apni musht-e-Khaak / baam-e-buland yaar ka hai aastana kya (meri Khaak saba-breeze ki seeDhi-ladder khoj rahi hai Kya mere mehboob ka aastaaN aise buland baam par hai?) Begum Akhtar ki is Ghazal ko aap aur aap ke saare naazreen ek martabah sunein (kaha jaata hai ke Aatish ne apne rival aur ustad shayar NaasiKh par is matl’e mein tanz ki thhi). Jigar Moradabadi ka maqt’a hai jis mein woh kehte hain (describing the sunset of life after friends have cut ties) “ab aftaab-zeest lab-e-baam aa gaya”… Just one thing. I admire your vast knowledge of Hindi film music and your encyclopaedic memory. You bring out so many nuances which we often tend to miss. As a former college teacher and a devoted student of Urdu and Faarsi for the greater part of my life, I indulge in the odd bit of nitpicking. Mu’af farmaaiye

Che in Faarsi is what not me, kunam (when you add m at the end it becomes first person in Faarsi) is karuN; che kuni is what are you doing; che kunad is third person (what is/does). The Faarsi giant, Hafiz-e-Shirazi in a shayr says: che daham sharh-e-firaaq (what do I say, how do I interpret my separation. Of course he is referring there to man’s fall from Paradise.) If you remember the OP Nayyar song from Phir wohi dil laya hun nami daanam = I don’t know, म in the end form of the conjugation; raftam with म in the end = I go; che kunam therefore is what do I do; The use of contrasting moods or states such zindagi-maut / haNsi-rona, roshni-zulmat or andhera, wafa-jafa, saza-jaza etc. is a common poetic device in the Urdu Ghazal and Majrooh was a master of the Ghazal even before he came into films…His Ghair Filmi Ghazals (a few of which can be found on TH-cam in Majrooh’s voice at Mushairas) are a treat. Yes, he admitted in more than one interview that it was Naushad who introduced him to write lyrics for movies breaking out of the traditional mould of the rigid patterns of Urdu metre…

He, however did equally well with the like of Prem Dhawan (several films ) , Sahir for Vaasna (Jeenewale Jhoom ke ) and even Kaifi Azmi for Parwana (especially Yun na sharma ) and Hamara Adhikar.
