Sir, liked this programme on Mukeshji very much. Your choice of songs presented in this programme is worth an appreciation. The contents that follow the songs during discussions are enriching. Another programme on Mukeshji is also desirable, particularly for non-filmy heartful renditions. Sir, my mind is hovering around many other songs of Mukeshji and want to mention particularly the tandem songs where Mukeshji's singing outstands other legendary singers e.g. आ लौट के आजा मेरे मीत (also sung by Lataji), मुझको इस रात की तनहायी में आवाज़ न दो, हमने तुझको प्यार किया है जितना, जिस दिल में बसा था प्यार तेरा, सारंगा तेरी याद में (also sung by Rafiji), ज़िन्दगी ख़्वाब है (also sung by Mannada) to mention a few. Sir, Sunder Pyari was Mukeshji's elder sister. She used to learn music at home and as a child Mukeshji would listen and try to sing too. It was during her wedding, Actor Motilalji heard Mukeshji sing and helped him establish as a singer in the then Bombay. Please accept my warm regards for this lovely memorable programme.💐🙏
thank you very much. Yes, you have stated correct facts. I will try to accommodate the songs you have mentioned. But, surely will do another Mukesh talk soon
Sir, You are very correct in saying Mukesh sang only one song in a movie and that became superhit! There are several examples for this like BAMBAI KA BABU , Dr VIDYA , SAMBANDH and SHARDA . The important aspect in these songs is that they were composed by SDB, OP NAYYAR and C RAMACHANDRA for whom Mukesh was not the preferred singer and these became superhit especially the song from SAMBANDH Chal akela . Selection of songs were good but songs from these composers who did not prefer Mukesh was to be included., may be in part 2.
Dear Sharma ji, I have been listening to your programs. I appreciate the vast knowledge you have about the singers, lyricists, music composers and many more aspects of Hindi film music. Like me thousands of music lovers anxiously wait for your wonderful presentations. I hope to join in the coming sessions. Many of my friends thank me on sharing your programs links. I express my gratitude to you for enriching our knowledge. With kind regards, Vijay Sharma, Artist, Padma Shri awardee, Chamba, Himachal Pradesh
Because he couldn't sing intricate songs, his main legacy is as the king of sad songs (in random order) like Ansu bhari hain, Hum chal rahe thhe, Saranga, Jane kahan gaye woh din, Koi jab tumhara hridaya tod de, Raat andheri, dur savera, and so many other songs that pierce our heart. So I find it astonishing that your selection almost completely ignored them !
@peeyushsharma346 True, but shouldn't there be a fair sprinkling of the songs closest to our hearts ? Anyway, keep going, your programmes are irresistible !
In my limited understanding, the Chakraborty and Bhattacharya were titles exclusively conferred on brahmins and were probably connected to their professions as teachers and priests. As far as Majumder, Sikdar, Talukdar, Sarkar etc are concerned, they were titles which came into currency from the Saltanat era and continued into Mughal times. These were conferred on people professionally connected to livelihoods based on landholding and revenue collections, both of which were pivotal for supporting those empires. Unlike Chakraborty and Bhattacharya, these titles were bestowed on both Hindus and Muslims. Incidentally, the Eastern part of undivided Bengal was less populated till the late Sixteenth century when Akbar had annexed much of it in 1574 AD. Its emergence as an important source of revenue followed with large scale removal of forest cover and introduction of wet rice cultivation. Therefore, those with titles based on landholding and revenue collection and based in East Bengal (present Bangladesh) had their ancestors starting to largely settle there from early Seventeenth century. Finally as far as Mukesh was concerned, he had sung a hauntingly beautiful song in film 'Moorti' tuned by Bulo C Rani. He had sung it along with Khurshid and Hamida Banu and it was based on raag Tilak Kamod. The song was 'Badariya baras gayi us paar'. It came in the same year as 'Pehli Nazar' (1945) where he had sung that celebrated mixed Darbari 'Dil jalta hai to' under Anil Biswas. Another song by Mukesh in 'Chhoti Chhoti Baatein' (1965) under Anil Biswas 'Zindagi khawab hain' was superlative.
thank you so much. I truly appreciate your comments. Bhattacharjee was practicing Brahmins who performed rituals. As, Chakraborty , yes, mostly were Brahmins, but I have had close friends who were not Brahmins, but given the title. And, yes, I am well aware of the Mukesh trio from Moorti. Indeed a very beautiful composition
I was not aware of non-brahmin chakrabortys. Thanks a lot for this information! That Ashok Ghosh whose name had appeared as music director of 'Nirdosh' was the brother of Pannalal Ghosh was also a great revelation! Thank you so much! In fact 'Basant' released in 1942 with Pannalal Ghosh as its music director was also rumoured to be ghost-tuned by Anil Biswas. His name could not be mentioned due to contract issues with the record company. I understand that Begum Akhtar's songs in 'Roti' under Anil Biswas too had faced some problems. These contract restrictions were probably similar to restrictions imposed on Hollywood stars by the studios with which they were contracted in its so called golden era. Finally, I would request you to shed some lights on the songs of Prempatra (1962) which had reportedly faced some problems. You had included one of its songs in the introductory medley. Hopefully a suitable occasion will arise in future meriting a discussion on this.
