Helpful 💪🏽 First 4stroke never done a valve check. Are you lifting the rocker to take out any slack or something? Kind of looks like it. And it looks like I do not need to check until 3000km from new?
@@BushmanCanuck Right on! The check is quite easy on these 500’s. Yes I articulate the rocker find the clearance. You can probably skip the valve inspections in the near term, or extend the intervals. If your bike starts and runs well, they are probably fine. The reason I am doing these checks and posting them up is because I have come across a tremendous amount of bad information on KTM. I was actually skeptical to purchase one because it seems like more than any other big brand. Saying they aren’t reliable, are junk, breakdown all the time, too much maintenance, etc. On the other side there are a few sources that are saying the valves in particular, are very reliable on these machines. For me this is a great opportunity to confirm or deny rumors and opinions. To produce no bs video’s, you see what you get.
@@dustinhoover3157 Mucho Gracious
Your spread sheet starts at 55 hrs. Was that your first valve check? Just rode the first hour on my 24 500 and did the oil and filter change. Its in the mid 50's now if I do the first valve check.
@@ridemfast7625 Collumn (A) was the first check. I decided to check based on miles for my use case, tracking hours as well. Owners manual calls for every 1,860 miles (3,000km). There is a note for a one time check at 43.4 miles (70km). With that said, if your bike is starting and running fine, you could skip the inspections at these early stages. Of course, you can keep up on the checks for science, tracking, and entertainment purposes.
@@ridemfast7625 Temperature can affect the values, but I would not worry about it in mild temps. Just make sure the engine is at ambient temperature.
I went with the Best Dualsport Bikes power package and added a factory map switch. Very happy with results! Great video. I just did the same setup you have. Good to know the fuel economy increases!
Right on! Keep in mind this was a controlled test. You could easily get less mpg if you are out there ripping it up!
It’s funny because my Husky Vitpilen 401 does the same thing. Gas light come on at half a tank
Are you changing oil based on hours or miles ridden? 36.1 hours between oil changes? I have the same bike and I’m wondering how far I can go from what the manual recommends. Thank You.
@@gregharris2928 I am going more on miles because I am accumulating more distance than time. Tracking both of course. If you ride tight, technical, single track go on hours. If you ride a lot of two track, fire roads, BDR type stuff go with distance. Plus factor in your intensity.
Wondering if riding pavement but in the foothills or sierras, riding the twisties and some sweepers, if that would slosh more fuel for the pump?
@@ridemfast7625 Absolutely. It comes down to terrain and rider input. If you are on a flat smooth road riding in a strait line, it will stop picking up a bit less than half tank. If you are log hoppin', rock jumping, enduro riding you might use most or all of the fuel.
TBN is strong. Seems like 1,500 miles or more is fine. Do you know some one with a dyno? What do they think of the Get SX1? Good Map(s) with timing and fuel...?
@@ridemfast7625 Yeah I recently had access to the dyno at Taco Moto Co. I am hoping to get a video up on that soon. They are a distributor of the Get ECU and have unique maps for the units they sell. All the reviews I have seen about the SX1 have been positive. Your bike will gain output, and will have the lean condition corrected. There is the Vortex and Aim ecu options which will get you similar gains, but the Get is the most premium and offers the most end user tune-ability. It is also the most expensive. Download the WiGet app and you can access features of the ecu and tune it on your phone. @@Thatbeardedguy86 That's a bummer! Might be a good reason to get a another bike and just dedicate the Husq to the dirt. These are enduro bikes with turn signals, and that may be the most important thing for a potential buyer to understand. @@dustinhoover3157 Cool. I have a very stupid question. When the key is switched on nothing happens. No fuel pump prime, dash panel does not light up... nothing happens. Hit the "start" switch and bike starts, everything works - dash panel and turns. Is this normal? So even to set the clock or reset odometers the bike has to be running?
@ridemfast7625 It's normal. Here are some options to wake up the display: 1. Quick press either the + or - buttons on the display. No key needed. You can access your display features. 2. With the key in and turned on, quick press the start button. No need to hold until the bike starts running. This will wake up the entire electrical system. 3. Roll the bike until the wheel speed sensor wakes up display. 4. Start the bike. Even if the bike is running, the display can go to sleep, this will happen while not moving after a period of time.
Good info! Just bought a 24 500excf. Torn between Motorex, Motul or Maxima Pro. fwiw - Taco guy says the Motul and Maxima Pro+ performed the best with all the UOA he had done. Dont know the intervals though.
@@ridemfast7625 Nice! The 500 has been alot of fun. Yeah, there are a few sources out there giving us the go ahead on longer intervals. For me it was one of those situations that I wanted to verify. That, and I want to post the actual reports for viewers to see. There is another comming soon.
This was very helpful, I just bought my exc f 500 a week ago, thank you!
Thanks for your informative video. It helped me decide not to buy another 500 EXC. I owned a 2003 525 EXC for almost 20 years and you are correct. It is not a good, long distance highway or freeway bike. For many reasons they are actually very poor highway and freeway bikes. During much of that same time period I owned a 2008 KLR650 which is in my opinion is a very good and comfortable road bike. I put over 20k fun adventure miles on my KLR but it was also painfully underwhelming in every possible way but mainly regarding horsepower and true off road capabilities. So now I’m thinking a DR650S might be a fun bike that would do a little bit of everything. May I ask your thoughts?
@@sailor7557 I considered the XR, DR, and KLR 650’s leading up to the KTM. I knew they would be tanks and great bikes, but in the end the KTM was more interesting. It is a lot of fun to ride off-road. It seems to be a care free vs. athletic decision in the end, because all of these bikes can be modified to suit your purpose.
Having TC on my 701 made me a believer and will have it on the 500excf. Some will say its a crutch, use your throttle and clutch blah blah blah... Nope! I will use a switch and turn on TC! Curious, do you think the 24 500 suspension is too stiff? Especially when slow rolling, not hitting the trails hard...
@@ridemfast7625 I don’t see a problem with using traction control either. We used throttle and clutch control for years and it works. So what, we have other options now. I think the suspension is great. I’m not in a hurry to change it. It really comes down to rider weight and if you carry cargo.
@@dustinhoover3157 Weigh 205 with all gear, no cargo. Average senior rider in the foothills and sierras with some rocky terrain, not just fire roads.

Does the world actually have a truly balanced 50/50 dirt vs. pavement machine? Or are we fooling ourselves? Should an EXC-F be kept as dirt oriented as possible (while still meeting registration regs), and an ADV be kept as pavement oriented as possible, rather than people trying to criss-cross these two separated classes to meet in the middle?
@@exothermal.sprocket I’d say the 500 would be best kept as a dirt oriented machine. My comments about its weak points on road are just to give information on what it is. The KTM brands have probably done more than any other to give the best spread of model options from dirt bike/dual sport to ADV.
@@dustinhoover3157 Yep I understood. Here's me bemoaning the fact Yamaha never developed a WR450R with the same sort of longevity and reliability as the 250R had. Or, here's me bemoaning the fact no 500cc Vtwin dual sport has ever been developed that straddles the fence between enduro and ADV.
I was under the impression that when you added the Athena GET ECU and swapped the exhaust, you were supposed to remove the reeds from the airbox as part of that mod, not continue to run them. No?
@@bryanrichey6840 It's optional. The bike will run well either way. There was information going around that suggested that bottom end power was better with the reeds in. From what I have seen, it is very minimal. Mid to top end power is increased quite a bit with the reeds out.
@@dustinhoover3157 from my side, and correct me if I’m wrong, I understood the reeds to be placed there to limit air flow to match the lean fuel condition due to EPA compliant mapping and stopped up exhaust. Additionally, one of the risks with the reeds is that if/when they come apart, can cause valve and piston damage by blocking the valves from full closure. Since the lean condition is corrected by remapping with the new ECU and exhaust that can breathe better, the reeds get removed to allow for better air intake and mitigate the risk of engine damage.
@@bryanrichey6840 Valid.

Too bad KTM didn’t think about their design flaws ahead of producing such a limited fuel system. Happy trails.
@@gregharris2928 Thank you for the comment. From what I have heard, KTM basically considers the fuel pump location to be a non issue because these are enduro bikes. You are correct, the fitment issue is unique to the bike brand, geometry, and frame size.
