Jeep: Metal Cloak Control Arms Install
Finally found some time to get the Metal Cloak DuroFlex Control Arms installed. This install video includes the removal for some JKS Drop Brackets that were bought by the previous owner to adjust for the 4.5 inch lift kit he had installed. Unfortunately, My Rock Krawler Lower Control Arms failed and it was not covered under their warranty. So I quickly jumped at the chance to install something way better than Rock Krawler and ordered the Full Set of Metal Cloak DuroFlex Control Arms. These things are beefy and will compliment the HD Steering Kit I installed earlier.
The install is fairly easy to do and req2uires only a few large sockets, some jack stands and a jack. I would also recommend a Tie Down strap if you are doing this job alone as it will help pulling or pushing the axle into the right spot for the new arms.

    Can you provide a link to the lights used in the fender? Do these function as turn signals, and not just running lights? I think you said quadratec pre-runner lights. But when I look those up, I only see the three lights that go in the grill. So I’m confused on how those wire in, etc. Great video thank you!

      The lights for the fender are from Metal Cloak and can be found here. metalcloak.com/low-profile-led-marker-lights-jk.html They are Running lights and should be plugged into your original marker light wiring from the stock fenders. Sorry if I confused you with the quadratech set up. Those lights also tapped into the marker light as well. actually, the metal cloak lights and the quadratec lights themselves look exactly the same.. it's just a low profile amber led with grommet. I checked the metalcloak website and it looks like they updated them to have a clear lense and orange LED. I believe mine are an orange lense.. they turn on when you either turn on your running lights or headlights. Thanks for watching and best of luck. Hollar if you need any more info

    Hi, great video. What is the reason to install the track bar after the drag link and the tie rod ? Im doing the same job right now ? Bearing, balls joints, track bar, drag link, tie rod and winch. Thanks

    • @86Ctopher
      @86Ctopher 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Buddy! In the video, I installed the track bar first and then the drag link and tie rod. You probably noticed that the tie rid and drag link were already removed at the beginning of the video and that is because I had just finished the ball joint installation. I was already prepped to start the track bar removal. The Metal Cloak instructions for the track bar do not require you to remove the drag link or tie rod. I just felt like it was an easier starting point to install it first with the tie rod and drag link out of the way. The one thing that I should have shown in the video was how to check the proper trackbar length to center the axle. I set the length based on the recommendations from metal cloak and did not have to make any adjustments. There are some good videos from Wayoflife and a few others on centering the axle. Basically check each side of the Jeep at the front wheel and a fixed point like the fender. If the driver side wheel sticks out 1 inch past the fender, the passenger side wheel should stick out exactly one inch as well. If it doesn't, you may have to lengthen or shorten the track bar so that both measurements equal each other. Good Luck on the install! If you have any questions, let me know.

    I'm impressed with the decreased stopping distance. Forty or so feet of difference from 50MPH versus stock set up is remarkable! Plus, with the drilled and slotted rotors, you will have much better braking in the rain and cooler rotors on long down hill runs (thinking Pikes Peak). At the very least, these brakes ought to be standard issue for Jeeps with automatic transmissions. Keep 'em coming. I believe the biggest difference between the two are rope type and weatherproofing. APEX has a higher weather-resistant rating than the ZXR and also has a synthetic line which is lighter weight than the galvanized steel wire rope and just as strong. I am not sure if the ZXR comes with the wireless remote? The ZXR might be a little cheaper but as far as pulling power, they are the same. I prefer the looks, weatherproofing, synthetic line and wireless remote personally. Mine has been a workhorse and I love it.

    I just ordered the MC Track bar, but already installed the Moog tie rod & Drag link, wish I would have gotten all MC, for a few hundred more. Will get the MC Control arms next.

      I think you will really like the track bar. That thing is BEEFY. The moog should hold up long enough to save your money to upgrade. I have had to do my upgrading a little at a time. I wish I could go and hit it all at once but I am learning quite a bit by going through each part of the suspension. I am thinking a MC Rear Track bar and swap out the springs for a 3.5 inch. It's either that or new driveshafts. Running this thing without adjustable control arms and bad pinion angles have really wreaked havoc on them. Hope you like your new track bar!! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!

      @@86Ctopher yeah, now I’m eyeballing the rear MC track bar, and upper, lower control arms and the sway bar links. I just ordered the steering damper from MC, to replace that garbage Rough Country I put In there. I have RC shocks too, originally ordered the Rancho 5000sx, but they did not fit in my 2010, the rear shock was like a 1/3rd of an inch too wide for the “cup” mount, and I did not want to widen it, so I bought the RCs, they seem fine. I’ll probably replace those Too with some decent mid grade Billsteins in the future, no Fox $$ here ;). Another big expense, I need a new gas thank skid plate, it’s the only part that is rusted out. Every other frame piece not a spot of rust. Dunno, seems guys in their 50s are loving their Wrangler upgrades, me being one, and 2 close buds of mine.

      Very nice! New trackbar and a stabilizer too! You will be all set! Be sure to use all 4 washers for your stabilizer at the bracket. For some reason I either misplaced 2 of them during the initial install or they weren't delivered with the relocation bracket. Metal Cloak reached out to me when they saw the video to help correct the mistake. It might be a super tight fit. Be prepared to possibly open it up a little! I loved your No Fox money comment... that's funny. I was thinking the same thing when I saw those new Rocksport Black Resevoir shocks Metalcloak just released. They don't make them for the JK yet but said they are working on it. I better start saving now lol! My thought is.. Wheel what you have until it breaks. Everything eventually fails, some parts (companies) sooner than others. More importantly, get out and enjoy it. Looking forward to hearing how your install goes.

    Loved the storm story. Reminded me of the time Evelyn and I tripped to the top of Pikes Peak with the roof panels off to better enjoy the experience. It began to hail near the top and very lucky that I had the roof panels in the back as my first inclination was to leave them in the garage. Great video. Much love from Buster and dad❣

      I have since learned to always respect the 10% chance of rain. I now own some jeep rain gear for a quick covering if the sky decides to unleash. I haven't had a chance to test it yet but I have no doubt it will be soon. Springtime in Oklahoma can be very erratic.

    So, Metalcloak reached out to me and really liked the video! Woo Hoo!! They also pointed out that during the steering stabilizer installation, I only used 2 washers and it should have been 4. Start with 1 on the bolt and then place the #2 washer on the bottom lip of the bracket, push the bolt through #2 washer then the eye of the shock, slide#3 washer between shock and the upper lip of the bracket, push the bolt all the way through, add #4 washer on the top of the bracket and then tighten the nut. I will tell you that it was an extremely tight fit and just like the track bar mounting point, I had to widen the space of the bracket to accept both washers and the shock. I wasn't sure if it was going to fit and it took quite a bit of opening up to get it right. It is much better now and rocksolid. Metalcloak customer service is on a whole other level guys!! Outstanding!!

      I actually saw that the "ears" or "tabs" seemed bent in around the shock and thought that is not the fit and finish I want. Thanks for clearing that up. When I feel the force tell me I'm soon to experience Death Wobble, I will keep them in mind as a good solution.

    • @86Ctopher
      @86Ctopher 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Tunaslayer1 Yeah, it was totally my bad. I didn't use the bracket that came with the stabilizer which actually had all four washers. I was using the hardware from the track bar relocation bracket and should have clued in when there was the extra space. I had to open the bracket back up after pinching it down while trying to get it to the right torque setting. So thankful for the comments from MetalCloak and others to help me out. It is so much better now, has a perfect fit and the little play I had in the stabilizer is gone. Thanks for the Comment Tuna... Good looking out.

    Put on the Metalcloak game changer 5.5” lift, the heavy duty steering upgrade, drop down brackets and new 40’s on my ‘13’ unlimited. It rides better now than when I first got the Jeep. Metalcloak is worth the money.

      That sounds like an awesome set up! It seems as though I am slowly converting my 4.5 Icon lift to a Metalcloak one. Those game changers are sweet. I just ordered the Duroflex control arms and will end up ordering new springs.. The crazy thing is I am considering dropping down an inch to a 3.5 lift and drop my 37s to 35s. The other option is to rid my Jeep of the Dana 30. But man, the price keeps going up....😂 thanks for the comment! stay safe on the trails!

    I wrote a big long comment yesterday and for some reason, the post doesn't appear today (?). One of my brain meds must have dropped the ball. Buster even chortled a bit when you discovered the stripped threads on the lower control arm! Great tutorial for 2007 and up Jeep owners. If you don't have DW now, hang on 'cause it's coming for you. Love from Buster and dad❤

    • @86Ctopher

      Yeah.. I thought for sure everything looked good but looks can be deceiving. I could feel/ hear the clunk which evidently was the rod end sliding within the control arm. At a regular parked position, it truly looked like it was in the correct position and tight. The new control arms will arrive tomorrow and I will start the replacement of all 8 arms next weekend. Now I need to order one of those angle devices to help dial in the correct pinion angle. The cool thing is Metal Cloak reached out to me after viewing the video with a huge thumbs up.. That was unexpected and appreciated!! Glad someone is watching these videos!! love ya Dad!

    Super video Chris. Very clear and helpful. Also wanted to say that I had a "Death Wobble" issue on a 2007 2 door that was so violent it scared me to death. It would usually start after hitting a significant pothole in the road at speeds over 50mph and wouldn't quit until nearly stopped. My problem wound up being wallowed out frame bracket attachment points for the track bars. This all happened with stock tires and rims and less than 60k on the odometer. They were so bad that I had to weld washers to both sides of the brackets and used new grade eight bolts to allow a higher torque level. I hope you have solved your DW problem with the new ball joints. Buster and I loved the video! ❣

    • @86Ctopher
      @86Ctopher 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is crazy how many things can contribute to the dreaded Death Wobble. Track bars are definitely on the list, ball joints, unbalanced tires, control arms, tie rods, and probably a few others. This video was recorded a while back and I found some time to finally get it posted. I also have another one prepped for upload which is basically the second half of this video. I figured it was best to split it up. Be on the look out for a few more over the next couple of days. Love you Dad!
