Milling Our Own LUMBER For Our BARNDOMINIUM Build - CEDAR On The Sawmill

  • In this video Greg mills cedar logs that we will use for our barndominium. The first log is so unique, that he decided to use those boards inside the house, maybe in a closet or a hallway- the rest of the cedar boards will be used as treated girts on the bottom of the structure. Hard to cover up beautiful wood like this, but it is the best wood to use for these bottom girts.
    Hope you enjoy this video, especially the "live" milling.
    We are building our barndominium - barn house out of wood that we are milling on our own sawmill. If you haven't followed along with our BARN Build, (which is now our barn house build) make sure to check out that series in our playlists. We finished the first slab last summer, we milled most of the timbers needed over this past winter/spring, added plumbing, put in a second slab for our garage and now we have started building our barndominium - barnhouse - lodge - our home, with 8 bents going up being the latest excitement! Now, we are working on securing the bents and adding to the structure.
    Here's the video where all 8 bents are put up in one day- it was pretty amazing:
    • It's FINALLY Time To B...
    Here's the video where we share our change in plans and decide to turn our barn into our home:
    • EVERYTHING Had To CHAN...
    Here is the video where we share our barn plans. Our plans are from ‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪‪@BarnGeek‬ . We are excited to build one of his beautiful barns and turn it into our home:
    • Why Do We Think WE CAN...
    ***We are also so excited to have completed our sawmill cover enclosure (sawmill shed). Definitely check out our Sawmill Playlist to watch it all happen. We have shared the process of building our sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and we live in North Idaho. The sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling for our barn build in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between!
    Here is a link to the video that shares the sawmill cover / sawmill shed build from start to finish:
    • Sawmill Cover Build - ...
    Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we built:
    3 posts in the front
    4 posts in the back
    Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
    Longest beam is 28 feet
    Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
    It will have a 3 :12 pitch
    Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"
    We have shared the entire build!

    Times like this I wish we could smell the wood being sawn :) Instead I'll just have to imagine how nice it was.

    I love seeing the whole process, but if I had to choose, I’d say the build. It’s exciting to see the lumber become functional and turn into your dream! 🌲

    Surprising an eighty year old cedar log produces that great cedar smell when it is cut. Look forward to watching you install it our your timber frame home. As for my preference, right now I like your construction videos but was pleased to have a break with you sawing some logs.

    Well, it took me 8 days to binge watch all of your videos from your first one. I follow Martin Johnson Off Grid and caught you when he had you mill the hemlock for his mantel. 🤗

    Sure is nice knowing that when I need some pieces for the barndominium, I can just make it on the sawmill! It's even cooler when the log has some history like this first log. Hope you enjoy this video. What do you like better - watching sawmill videos or building videos? Let us know in the comments! 😁

    Like it when people work with their hands and build things. I grew up in the 50s and 60s and my father was a home builder. He never knew what a nail gun was and had wristsd of steel.

    • @ourdreaminthewoods
      @ourdreaminthewoods  วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi, Terry- I bet your dad had hands of steel.
      I hammer for an hour and my tennis elbow starts bothering me. Still satisfying to build something out of real old fashioned timber and boards. It almost feels wrong putting the sheathing on with all that glue and protective coating.

    Special stuff there sir. Definitely reserve those for Interior work. Perhaps some beautiful window sills and aprons and trim out the large picture window and your grand entrance to the pioneering homestead that is " OUR DREAM IN THE WOODS " DID those piles come from the Naval Base???

    • @ourdreaminthewoods
      @ourdreaminthewoods  วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thank you, Todd! I’m going to have to pick through them - lots of good stuff but some of them are split.
      They came out of our lake. There is a spot that traps drift wood and debris where the Clark Fork river enters Lake Pend Oreille. We do have a secret navel submarine testing base on the lake- testing deep water stuff (so they say). 😁

    So how do like the faster lift on the sawmill now. I finally bit the bullet today and bought a new electric start motor to convert my mill over so that I can buy a lift like yours and a monitor also. Good new video. Thanks.

      Thank you, Tom- I really like the new lift and faster speed. Just feels dialed in compared to a year ago. Of course I’ve been milling some quality logs - that always helps! 😁

      Thank you for your thoughts. We do have a video that has just milling and the sound of the sawmill- no explaining- Milling in Real Time- It’s lonnngg and may explain why we use Timelapse with music. 😁
