I'm building a 22ft by 20ft double-deck shelf layout in my basement in HO scale. I'll post my progress on the layout, my scratch builds and any tips and tricks I learn and discover through trial and error as well along the way. I don't have time for editing with three young kids so please excuse my one-take gets 'r done approach! You can reach me at MiddleAgedModeler@yahoo.com
The latest 3 HO scale locomotives I've completed!
Got a VIA P42, a CP Triclops and a nasty CN Geep all ready for service. Feel free to skip to what interests you.

Coming to the last few of the videos on GP9RMs. This one was a fun one with lots of reference photos to get very close to the prototype.

Didn't capture the brushwork on this one. I took some liberties and strayed from the prototype as there weren't many photos of CN 7009.

I've gotten to the tail end of my first commission and it feels great. Each of these got the personal touch with hours spent doing brushwork, airbrushing, powders and oils. Hope he likes'em!

A quick layout update from me - trains in the bathroom!
มุมมอง 246หลายเดือนก่อน
Well, that makes three helices that I've built and torn down. Didn't feel bad about tearing them down either. Necessary evil IMO. This new addition will add about 35 ft of mainline running and gives you the option of going #2 while a train 'wizzes' by, pun intended!
Part 2: the prototypical zombie CN 4762. Black paint chipping
มุมมอง 434หลายเดือนก่อน
Here, I've compressed over an hour of brushwork down to 4 minutes. I'll be doing white next, with a little red at the end. Airbrushing, panel- lining and airbrush again. That should get it to 90%. We'll see.

I bought four of these HO scale Athearn RTR tnakers from Andrew at last year's Ancaster train show.after seeing the prototypes on the rails. They sat for a year. Now im doing something with them because they have history, character, and unique colour. Sign me up! My favorite combo to model. #weathering #modeltrains #hoscaletrains #railway

VERY nice job Matt. The GP38-2 is great.
Thank you Luc. Appreciate the feedback!
@mattw9667 Hey Matt. Tell me if I'm right (or wrong) here. Did you make that GP38-2 from and old Athearn shell and put all the detail parts you're mentioning in the video ? I know Atlas is making a GP38-2 but it's the Trainman serie . They're only making the GP40 as Silver Serie. Or maybe I didn't listen at all and you told us everything in that same video... Is it an Atlas mechanic ?
Nice work Matt on all 3 locomotives they look awesome. Cool weathering and detail parts
Thanks Mike. Hope you had a good weekend at the show. Welcome back
What colour black did you use on the CN #4718 and name of paint?
Rubber, flat black and black from tamiya
💯🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂
Thanks Daerick
I've never heard anyone say 'decals' like that. Potatoes / Potatoes I guess🤔
Where you from? Dee-cals or deck-als. Do you say dodeecahedron or dodecahedron? :-)
Wow the GP38-2 is absolutely jumping for joy! LOL great job with all of them Matt👍👍
Thank you Gene. He's looking a little worse for wear. Have a good week
All 3 of those models are absolutely gorgeous! Thanks for sharing.
Appreciate the feedback, I love sharing them!
Id definitely like to see how you did the Triclops and CN unit im currently in the process of making a CN SD60M Triclops what if unit and want to make it weathered and well used
Ok, I'll post that video up within a week or two. Thanks for watching! I have a similar video up for CN 4762 if you want to watch that one now.
The master at work. Superb weathering.
Thank you Syl!
Love how 4718 turned out! Looking good! Beautiful job once again!
Thanks Andrew! Means a lot coming from you. Love your work too
Nice work.
Thanks very much!
Awesome work Matt, I did my LokSound install on my P42 with a decoder buddy. If you plan on upgrading yours, I can send you what all the internal wiring does.
Hey Nolan, thanks for the offer. Do you know if this thing has ground lights? I didnt see any wiring.
That CN unit, holy cow! I'd like to see airbrushing videos please..
Hi Chris. I've got a vid for my other zombie but not this one. Please search for "Part 1 - Creating a prototypical ZOMBIE in HO scale for CN 4762" on YT. Cheers!
@@mattw9667 Got it. Thanks!
Incredible, what else can one say. Matt I think that rivet thingy is called a pin wheel. You can purchase specifically for doing embossed rivets. I have a couple.
Awesome channel great video keep them up make sure you like and subscribe thank you for your support I need all feedback on my train videos thank you
Right, bought mine a few years ago to do the bobtail swing bridge. Comes in handy every now and then. Thanks for the kudos!
Thanks Mark! Will do!
Beautiful work my friend!! Very well done!!
Thanks Wade. Maybe one will run on the Silvercreek Sub sometime this year? Take care buddy
Awesome channel great video keep them up make sure you like and subscribe thank you for your support I need all feedback on my train videos thank you
I remember seeing that odd combo of the noodle logo and the zebra stripes and have wanted to do that with a model some day. Your work for it turned out quite well. Do you happen to remember what unit is is based on since the real 4718 doesn't have that.
Really? Got a recent TH-cam clip of the engineer's side working in Edmonton. Bugger if it's not as that was a nightmare to do!
@mattw9667 The pictures I find on rrpicturearchives don't show 4718 with it. I know I saw that on one of the units though.
Try typing CN 4718 into TH-cam. There is nothing recent showing this side. Or Flickr too
@mattw9667 I did finally find one online from back in 2020. I just love how truly unique that one is with the two liveries bleeding thru each other. CN's stuff has always weathered so uniquely.
Totally. I love my interesting geeps. Unfortunately they are pretty tough to do.
Can we please get a locomotive roster video
Hey man. I do those every May. I'll have lots more ready for the anniversary. Cheers
I'm interested in how you do your ground lights.
OK, got another Atlas on deck. I'll be sure to show the process once I get around to lighting. Cheers for your interest
Hi Matt & it's is Randy and i like yours video is Cool & Thanks Matt & Friends Randy
Evening Randy. Appreciate you watching my videos. Have a good evening
Tis my favorite paint scheme in CN and GMD GP9. So checks out👍👍🚂🇨🇦🖌🎨🙋
🎯. Thanks for watching Doug!
Outstanding work !
Thanks Jason. Appreciate the feedback!
The weathering on the finished loco is very light, the q Tip idea for painting the chain is something I would have never thought of. You must have a steady hand and good eyes.
Thanks Stephen. I'm learning as I go. Got tired of overspray and happened to have a q-tip in my hand. Thanks for watching
Hi Matt & it's is Randy and i like yours video is Cool & Thanks Matt & Friends Randy
Thanks very much Randy!
Great video, really gives a good idea of what went into the finished product. I'm just getting into airbrushing and actually have one of these models, do you have any pointers or recommendations on where I should even begin when it comes to weathering? Thanks in advance!
I've got a few more of my own to do. I'll film the process. Stay tuned!
Fantastic excellent job , I like that GP9 locomotive, very cool
Thank you very much James! Glad you like it
Amazing work!!
Thanks Bung Hole Camper! Awesome name!
@@mattw9667 Thanks Matt. That's my "Quake" name from 30 years ago. Most get a kick out of it however, its gotten me banned from a number of gaming platforms over the years. I'd give the name up if I could airbrush like you!! Thanks for sharing the great content!
Haha. My buddy has a name like that for gaming. Can't remember what it was but it made me laugh. Thanks for the kudos mate.
How much do you charge you do a great job and i work for the railroad and I have have alot of time to weather but I have some locomotives I would love have done
Evening. I charge based on complexity. I like to see the loco and the prototype photos you'd like to aim for. I've added contact info in my channel description. Cheers
@mattw9667 i will contact you soon
@mattw9667 how much did you charge for this locomotive that you did ? Thar will help me get an idea
Sounds good.
Let's talk through email.
For the craft paint, the dollar store has some really good acrylic paint but where do you get yours?. I notIced the handles on your first video, that really changed it. Great work ....Again 😂 Cheers 🍻 Earl
Hey Earl. Happy Friday. I buy my acrylics at Michael's. They usually have a discount and a really good selection
That’s absolutely remarkable Matt! 👏👍😃
Thanks Gene! Happy Friday
Nice Work
Thanks Zapp!
What about those cheap small brushes from harbor freight the bristles are black on those. This is a great tip thank you.
Could do but our dentist sends us home with toothbrushes on every visit so they're 'free'. She drives a 911 GT3RS. I think we pay for the toothbrushes.
Brilliant idea. Thanks for sharing.
Appreciate the feedback! Thanks Gee
Brilliant idea! I will try that! Thanks!
Hope it works out for you. Thanks for watching
Ohhhh well done🚂🇨🇦🙋
Thanks very much Doug! Enjoy the rest of your week
Hi Matt, Nice tip, and project. Once I saw what you were doing, I thought of monofilament fishing line. That way you could make longer ones. I'm thinking CB antennas on a big rig or marine band antennas. 😊😊😊
Hmmmm. I wonder if toothbrush bristles and fishing line are one and the same?
@mattw9667 Both are plastic fibers.
I’m working on a couple CN units as well with this feature; I may have to try this out! I like the end result! Good stuff! Keep em coming!
Cheers Andrew, hopefully you have a spare toothbrush lying around! Haha
Oh I’ve got a few lol! I was using the thin metal wire from led resistors but it just didn’t look quite right; this looks way better!
I was using copper from stranded wire. Looked great until your elbow mashes it down a few times. Then it breaks off.
Wow that came out good! I made a CB antenna for a farm truck one time, I cut a short piece of sprue and held a flame to it for a second, then pulled like taffy. Cut to length and attach. Also made fishing poles the same way. Recommend turning a little fan on.
...I'm sure the damage has been done by the amount of plastic I burnt during my pyro youth
Absolutely useful high tech - low buck tip Matt!!!. That was a phrase out of "Car Modeler" magazine when I did model cars and trucks!!. I see some good examples of cab details there that I need to do to 4713!!!! Earl 🦖
Awesome. Toothbrush prices will rise!
interesting. very helpful 👍
Glad you liked the idea!
Yup, that was a great tip Matt, thank you.
Awesome 👌 hopefully your 📡's will always be straight.
Again Matt ! Wonderful. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you again Luc!!!
Gorgeous job on that Canadian National GP9 engine Matt ! You got skills man !
Thanks Luc! Appreciate you watching and the kudos too
Great job weathering that Geep…
Thanks very much!
happy b'day. nice weathering
Thank you Syl
You beat my buddy, he only did a turnaround in his wife's laundry room over the washer and dryer
I hope there's a trophy floating around. I want my name on it!
Happy Birthday, Matt... and I hope it all goes well for you....
Thanks very much Tim!
Happy Birthday Matt!! 🎂🎉 Progress is coming along!. Hey, Adam could fix the sound file if you can't get it right. let us know. He just wrote TSM's Via, totally sounds different than yours! Love the GP9. A little weathering still goes a long way!!, It's how I will start out too. The power issue. I think all you need is a bus line and more feeders. At least every 4ft. In my vids, both the 2 upper layers are on a 5 amp DB150 and that is well over 150 ft plus siding/storage. any engine power consists of 3 -5 tri-axles and we can run easily 2 trains. The whole main is also on a 5 amp but that also has all the engines stored or sitting with power on. I have no isolated yard. If we do accidently have a short, the command station keeps tripping because it's trying to turn on all the engines at once!!!.. LOL it's happened a couple time and that's why I want to isolated the engine yard... Cheers Matt...🍻🍻 Earl 🦖 We are going to the club tommorow. if you have some time , drop in and see us!!
Thanks Earl. I'd love that sound file if Adam still has it. Can't make Sunday as I'm making birthday dinner for my step-mom. The geep was a good change for me. Something out of my comfort zone. Not too worried about this new extension's gremlins as I'll hopefully tear the whole thing out within a year. Exciting times
That what im talking about! That Geep is perfect! Good job Matt!
Thanks Wade! It's tough to hold back eh!
@ absolutely, I find it way harder to make it subtle
Totally, it's overcooked in 2 seconds.
@ exactly, the hard part is adding just enough for an effect without anyone noticing you did anything, and that geep is a prime example, really good work my friend!
Thanks Wade
