I'm trying to the same install but with debian 12. I installed successfully it with vmm, I can ping websites and get return, but I cant open any site with w3m or lynx or update with "apt update". Its a network or config issue with debian or with vmm and pf? I changed the mirrors in /etc/apt/source.list

Hey, thanks so much for making this video. I recently bought t480 and I'm interested in trying OpenBSD for the first time. But I'm concerned about the thunderbolt issue on t480, I'm still a bit confused. After I bought the laptop, I immediately upgraded the nvm firmware version to version 23 and upgraded the thunderbolt software to the lateat version. If I switch to OpenBSD, do I still need to upgrade the driver and firmware for thunderbolt? I'm a bit afraid to switch to OpenBSD because of that.

Many of the platforms that OpenBSD supports use serial consoles for local administration, so a GUI isn't really an option. Also, the OpenBSD installer works pretty well. A new user can accept the defaults for most options, but if you need a specialized configuration, the flexibility is there. Tbh, I'd probably be very annoyed if they changed it.

If you have problems with the Caddy reverse proxy then do it like this.? Edit with your text editor of choice etc/caddy/Caddyfile. Where is says :80 put the IP of your machine followed by the port. Like this 192.168.1.10:7000 Then inside the {where is says delete root * /usr/share/caddy and replace with reverse_proxy IP 192.168.1.10:8080 (your machines IP and the port that kiwix runs) 2 lines down delete file_server.

I would definitely switch to OpenBSD if not a few applications I need Linux for.

I recently bought Kiwix and I wanted to see if I can access internet offline. I did not get half of what you are talking about, especially the part where you were coding!

I use KVM, the multi processor thing is not an issue, but you have to use VGA drivers if you want 1080p, and the AC97 audio if you want sound at all, neither of which are defaults. Do you know if OpenBSD ever plans to add virtio drivers?

Would this also work with like an VM? Since all my openbsd servers are VMs/dedicated servers...

The thing I don't understand is why we don't have the official KDE and Gnome versions of OpenBSD. Why do we have to build them on our own? This process can be too much for the end user. The same thing goes for live versions. The official ISO should support live so OS enthusiasts can try it with Ventoy USB and install it whenever they want.

This was interesting. I always thought about trying SSH & X11 forwarding on VMM "some day" but that day didn´t arrive. IDK if that was even possible but this I now know work at least. Thanks for sharing! My main reason for running Linux on my work laptop is that I need to have Anydesk or Teamviewer with me (because users). To be honest I also need a laptop to also be able to automatically switch from suspend to hibernation after some time because weekends vs battery and my brain´s randomizing features of memory. Unrelated fact: There are very few distro´s that does "hibernation after sleep". If you are lazy and want it simple, Manjaro with KDE and OpenSuse leap KDE is the only two that does this with stability. Basically you need a swap partition larger than RAM, and KDE then has a GUI setting for it. And you need to sacrifice to the SystemD gods too and hope they didn´t randomly break this feature on your distro. And I guess you also want to have a "real" ThinkPad too, as usual.

WOW! That was really cool OpenBSD Guy! Excited to try this out next chance I get. I wonder why it is so slow? Is there any way to run Linux only emulators or games in a VMM at near native speeds?

It should be possible to do it without Xephyr. You just have to figure out how to pass `-listen tcp` to the host's Xorg. Another remark: you only have to allow TCP connection to ports 6000..6010 from tap0, not every interface.

Isn't it a bit wasteful to copy the entire base set into a folder just to run one application? Also, doing MAKEDEV in a user controlled directory seems unsafe. Can't you just copy some bits from your system into the chroot, and then use ldd to see what libraries the chroot needs, and then just use that? Basically craft a chroot jail for the application instead of a complete system?

I do not agree with author. gcc and clang are both optimized for modern hardware and both compilers are compatible with with any reasonably popular architectures. It's more important to stick to one and master it.

Nah.. Thanks for the video, but I'll stick with CDE. To this day it's my favorite video on your channel. And all the security talks, it all depends on what you are using it for. The machine with OpenBSD and CDE I use does not have an access to any crucial data nor my banking. All I do on it is read and write, and it works like charm.

So you don't ever plan to actually be used by a lot of folks huh. There was one I believe that did have a gui installer called devil bsd. All traces of it disappeared within a month. So it can be done. but I could be wrong. It wouldn't be the first time.

on my openbsd (hp mini elitedesk fanless 6th gen intel) i use fvwm3 modified similarly to nscde but not exactly the same... i used some configs i found on web and modified them could you show us how to host a site on oopenbsd or how to install a very light desktop ? What is the lightest...a test!
