    its not gonna be maxing out any modern SSD since the PS3 likely has a SATA1 or SATA2 controller which runs at 150MBPS and 300MBPS respectively and its doesn't always perform on its max performance but its still better than an HDD that would normally run at 40-100MBPS depending where on the HDD the data is written on.

    SSD speeds may not be a huge difference compared to the HDD but the in-game textures and assets will load in way faster and smoother and the whole system will feel snappier overall.

    It seems obvious that it should improve performance. It can't increase the maximum transfer speed limits of the PS3, but certainly the lookup speed, as there is no moving head anymore. I think the instantly loading icons in the GT menu are a perfect example for this. On the HDD, looking up every icon always takes a moment, which is why they load visibly one after another. Also the default HDD maybe doesn't even max out the possible transfer limits of the PS3, but I would think an SSD would basically max out the PS3 storage speed as far as possible.

    While I'm sure the SSD would still beat the HDD any day of the week, I think it was quite unfair comparison with the *retail* HDD being nearly 20 years old (actually impressive it still runs today) that would surely have worn out through all that time. A better comparison would've been a brand new HDD with same capacity vs the SSD.

    • @KillRei

      An HDD doesn't get worn out if fired up regularly (to keep the platter magnetized and capacitors charged). Performance also won't be be affected by age in this case here.

      @@iplyrunescape305 Sorry, meant to say that it does get worn out mechanically but still negligible effect on performance so another comparison is unnecessary. As for drops and misc fall damage, the HDD is screwed down to the console so the there should be little to no damage as shock is absorbed by the console. If it does break then likely, so would be the whole system itself.

    A major overhead factor in load speeds for most PS3 games is the decompression of assets. It doesn’t really matter how fast read speeds are if the data being read isn’t immediately useable, and virtually every PS3 game was made with some form of data compression, even on disc-based games (for some reason), meaning that data can’t just be directly streamed off of the disc, and therefore not off the hard drive either (and any data stored on the drive normally by the game would have been encrypted anyway). This is why PS5 games tend to be significantly larger than their PS4 counterparts - files are uncompressed specifically to minimize load times by eliminating the decompression step on anything that could be needed “instantly” or on-demand. It’s a HUGE difference in philosophy but one that could only be made possible by requiring an SSD. That’s why there’s diminishing returns on older consoles which were never even designed with SSDs in mind.

    This is a great video, it's what sold me on grabbing an SSD for my PS3 rather than relying on the stock drive. I ended up grabbing a 512GB one and it fits every single game I ever wanted to play on it! Regarding the Gran Turismo 6 portion where the icons load in, playing Destiny on PS3 is the same way. Pressing start opens the menu, where by default on the HDD all the icons slowly load in and make the system laggy until they're finished. On SSD, they load in nearly instantly, letting me swap weapons in under a second. It's life-changing!

    SSD is faster but the PS3 wasn’t created for SSD in mind so it has problems. You will have issues playing certain games and especially if you want to play PS2 games. For some reason the emulator does not want to work with a SSD. I like the 7200 RPM HDD I choose. I have no problems playing any PS2 that I throw at it and, yes, it’s not as fast as a SSD but there is a slight speed difference compared to the stock HDD that was in my PS3. Also they’re pretty cheap, easily can get a 1 TB HDD for 40 bucks with great speeds

    I fitted a cheap 256GB one years ago, when prices got so low they were peanuts. All modem SATA SSDs would saturate PS3's SATA interface, it was always the random read and write that made PS3 so much faster in XMB. It sped up installation and loading in several games, helping out MGS4 and Gran Turismo 5 in my own tests. GT6 had several infamously huge patches that could crash PS3 if you didn't install one at a time- with an SSD it could manage it all at once.

    My only concern is write endurance. The PS3 does not have wear leveling, aka TRIM, so there will be instances where the SSD will be needlessly hammered by writes. That said, the drives are cheap, but it still is something to consider.

    • @KillRei
      @KillRei วันที่ผ่านมา

      If you use modern SATA SSD from a big branded company such as Samsung and Seagate, etc or use a NAS SATA SSD, wear-leveling and garbage collection is done by the SSD controller. Otherwise, you could just take the SSD out of the console, stick it to a PC and do TRIM-ming there. This needs to be done once a year is enough.

    My PS3 has a 1 TB hybrid hard drive. Before SSDs were cheaper hybrid hard drives or apart regular hard drive part SSD. At the time hybrid hard drives were the cheaper option. Because of that I don't have a reason to switch my hard drive out for an SSD because the difference in read write speed isn't that significant because of how slow the PS3 is. It only recommend going to SSD if you were going from the original style hard drives to it, otherwise there's a significant jump over hybrid hard drives. Of course nowadays if you're going to do it, just go SSD as they are cheap now.

    People always state “it cant take advantage of the hardware”. Those people have no clue, what they are talking about. The menu is improved, pop in is improved, and the screening tearing is gone. So the major complaints are gone. Any game that needs internal storage will see a massive difference. Far Cry for example is such a big difference. The SSD will always perform better. GTA V being installed on the SSD only huge difference in performance, and load times. Im not sure what SSD I put in my PS3 super slim. But theres not really load times. Im doing the same thing to my PS4 to increase its performance, & mainly storage.

    On a note, the PS3's SATA connection is only SATA 1 which is only 150 MB/sec. A 7200 RPM HDD does around 170-ish (the stock PS3 is a 5400 RPM, which is 100-ish MB/sec). Plus the PS3 pre-dates TRIM, meaning if it does a classical defrag it will shave massive life off an SSD in the long run. If you want a true improvement, score yourself a 512+ GB 7200 RPM mechanic drive.
