Balsa USA Stingray with DLE-20, RC Plane Build N0 32: Servos, Connecting Rods and soldering how to.
Welcome to my build series of the Balsa USA Stingray RC plane kit. The Stingray 120 is a great trainer and sport rc plane with an 83-inch wingspan and powered by a DLE-20 RC gas rc plane engine. I will be using a Futaba transmitter system with Futaba or Hitec servos and receiver. This plane is designed for .80 to .90 2-stroke glow engines, .90 to 1.20 4-stroke glow engines, and 15cc to 30cc gas engines. I will be using basic techniques of building rc plane balsa kits (or at least the techniques I have learned to build rc planes).
All of these videos are on a playlist.
In this video I install HiTec HS-645MG servos in the tail section for the rudder and elevator. I show how to solder clevises onto the connecting rods, and making proper adjustments to the servo connecting rods. I'm using a Futaba TJ6 transmitter. For the soldering I use Harris lead free flux and Harris solder for metal. I also try a Weller soldering iron, but end up using a mini torch from Harbor Freight to solder the connections.
I have been building, flying, crashing, modifying, and repairing radio control planes (RC Planes) for many years and enjoy sharing what I do with the radio control plane community, so I started RC Plane Tech channel for fun. I am not an expert, there are many different techniques when building radio control planes. A good way to learn about flying and building rc planes is to see what others are doing, that's what I do and that's why I like to share what I do.

This is Part 3 of my series where I repair my RC plane that I crashed. After repairing my plane, it's time for the post crash maiden flight. Other than that, I had several fun flights with the repaired plane. I have been building, flying, crashing, modifyi...

    I installed a DLE 20 with a Pitts wrap around muffler in a Top Flite .60 P-51 using the 688 mounts. My next project is a Hanger 9 Christen Eagle with a DLE 20RA, I would have purchased the same 688 mounts if I didn't watch your video. The 682 is great info and now I know I also have a choice with the Miracle Hobby for a 20CC. Thank You.

    mount your pump to the can... take a piece of 1/4 ply.. cut a piece, mount the pump.. cut a slot in each end.. then use a small ratchet strap to strap it to the can.. then you can eliminate the plugging and un-pluging the lines.. just fuel and then plug the plane end in the cap.. less connections.. less to do.. less chance of leaks and contamination.. and you carry it all with one handle... i use a similar setup with a 2.5 gallon and an electric pump.. use a lipo to power it.. carry it all on board the can.. only have to charge every few months..

    How hard to install and remove the wing? Thinking of doing this kit, but it won’t fit in my car unless I take off the wing every time I go to the field. Is that realistic with this plane?

    • @JamesRCPlaneTech
      @JamesRCPlaneTech 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi, well that what I will be doing. The wing goes on easily, plug in with the front dowels, and screw on the back. I do worry a little bit about the nylon bolts tapped into hardwood threads for this size of plane? But its not hard to install. Its a big wing, so I do have to transport disassembled.

    • @danh9624
      @danh9624 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@JamesRCPlaneTech Thanks for the reply. I have two other planes with nylon bolts tapped into plywood or hardwood threads, smaller than this plane, and I was so uncomfortable with that setup that I found a way to include nylon nuts. In one plane with a top mounted wing I insert the nuts through a fuselage cockpit window which just happened to line up perfectly and I left uncovered, and in another plane I glued the nut to the bottom of the threaded wood piece. I definitely know what you mean about wondering if just the tapped wood will do the job or not!

    I didn't follow the logic behind having the second clunk for fuel evacuation/filling. Why is it better than just using the carb line?

    • @JamesRCPlaneTech
      @JamesRCPlaneTech 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi, well I guess preference and also maybe access. If you have a cowl it may be hard to pull the carb line off. But if you have clear access, pulling of the carb line is perfectly fine. Like my Cub or my Revolver , I cant get to the carb line, so the third line is needed.

    James, I've just found this build series currently on no.11. What factors made you pick the stingray over the smoothie xl?

    • @JamesRCPlaneTech
      @JamesRCPlaneTech 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I was looking for a plane that would be good fit for the DLE 20 cc. And found the Stingray, which looked like an easier build. I really wanted to break into using gas engines over glow, and the DLE looks like a good starting point and the Stingray a good plane to go with it. The Smoothie XL looks awesome and I have considered this for a future build. It would be a more involved build and Probably would have to get the larger engine than the 20cc for it to perform best. So hope that helps.

But sometimes I read cracked pieces coming out of the motor. The DL20 quality looks better. Can you give a little update how the DLE20 is doing till now. Is it reliable? Does it perform well? Thanks in advance.

Hopefully it will survive that and then I can test the engine over time.

    The format of your video is very good. Specially for beginners. It depends on who the audience is. Some people are new to the hobby and in that case they can benefit from a narrated format. Thanks for taking the time to teach.

    Hi James when you start setting servos in it means you coming down the pike of finish line 😊. When I run the threaded rod into the inner rod I chuck the unthreaded into the drill and run it in & out of the inner rod makes it easy peasy also doesn't mar up the inner rod holding it. Lite winds and smooth landings.
